We just returned from our 4-night stay at the Angsana Laguna Phuket over Christmas. We had a great "Get your 4th night free" package. First off, I just want to say the resort is a very nice option to stay with the family and if you have young children (we have a 2.5 yr old). But don't expect luxury for the food, rooms, and service.

First the not-so-good. In a luxury hotel, we really expect the front desk to be welcoming and friendly during check-in and check out. This did not happen at Angsana. Maybe it was the hectic Christmas season but it is a hotel service person's job to be especially friendly when families are on holiday. It took us nearly 45 minutes to check-in because the hotel had our reservation under a different email address. How they attached our reservation to a random email address, I have no clue! I really believe it may have taken longer if my husband did not keep approaching the desk to ask what was going on. The was no welcoming staff with drinks or bracelets upon arrival like we have received at other luxury hotels. At check-in, we were told we could check-out after 3PM since our flight was so late. Then when we called on the last day just to confirm because we had made some off-resort trip plans, the front desk refused. Only after 10 min of back and forth with my husband did they finally oblige. Please keep your word!

The rooms were OK. Nice and spacious but furniture was dated. We had chipped wood on several places on black furniture which made the damage obvious. We could hear our upstairs neighbors walking/running and moving furniture because of the tiled floors in the Laguna rooms. Our AC didn't work and we had to call the front desk twice for someone take a look at it. Though, it finally started reaching temp the room always felt wet (and so did our sheets).

The breakfast buffet at the Marketplace was pretty bad. We had just come from the JW Marriott where the buffet selection is much bigger and ingredients looked more fresh. I found dirt in the salad on the my first morning and was forever grossed out by the food. Service felt like it was uninterested being there and we would have to request for children's plasticware every day.

Though the sandy pool is a lot of fun I think they need more staff at the cafe to man this area. The chairs and table were left with previous patrons' dishes and towels. We didn't see anyone cleaning up during the busy afternoon.

Lastly, for a luxury hotel, we expect a bit of exclusivity. We didn't feel this at Angsana. The resort is also part-vacation-home-ownership, which we didn't realize when we booked. When groups are larger because of this, you lose that exclusive feeling.

Now the good about Angsana. It is an expansive resort with a nice kids club and playground and of course the beautiful swimming pool. The baby elephant that comes to visit twice a day is a hit. We loved the direct access to Bao Tang beach and the the close proximity to a string of really nice beach restaurants. Angsana did a wonderful job with the Christmas program by providing a delicious Christmas Eve dinner at the Bodega Grill restaurant (the staff there was great!) and a Christmas service and Santa with presents for all the children on Christmas Day.

The service at the hotel was a mixed bag. We were very happy with the concierge service. They helped us book an Elephant ride one afternoon, as well as a car and driver for half-day so we could visit the amazing Tiger Kingdom about 40 min away. Our last day, we weren't scheduled to fly out until 7 PM, and the concierge provided us a car and driver to take us to the Nai Yang beach for an hour before our flight. (Tip: The taxi broker on-site was going to charge us load more to do this. Angsana cars are nice and include water and moist cool towels!)

"Thank you" to the TV technician who came to our room to help us view pictures we had taken at Tiger Kingdom on the TV. He switched our DVD player out with a Blue-Ray and gave us an HDMI cable to use so we can look at our pictures in HiDef!

All in all a lovely stay and a nice Christmas vacation. However, there are SO many other resorts in Phuket, we would definitely want to try something else.

Room Tip: Do not choose the Laguna rooms if you have young children who are still napping. The tiled floor a...

Dear phaaatlouie,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review.

I am glad that you and your family enjoyed your Christmas vacation and that you got to experience our 323 meter free form pool and facilities of the Tree House Kids Club together.

I would like to apologize for any of the inconveniences caused to you throughout your stay. In relation to the check-in process, all Angsana guests are welcomed upon check-in with a cold towel, welcome drink and friendship bracelet. That you were not extended this same courtesy is inexplicable and has been shared with Front Office staff for immediate investigation.

Your comments with regard to the cleanliness of Market Place and Pool Side Restaurant have additionally been shared with the concerne3d department for urgent examination. I sincerely apologize for this nuisance as food hygiene is of great importance to our resort and we strive to offer our guests the highest level of value.

I hope to welcome you back again in the future to provide you with a trouble-free, blissful stay.

Kind regards,
Jerry John

This is an absolutely perfect fit for families. My husband, two-year-old daughter and I stayed here for the 2013 Christmas holiday. The spa was heavenly (best hot-stone massage I've had). The staff are friendly and helpful and the pool and beach are easily the nicest I've visited. While the food in the resort ranges from adequate to enjoyable, the beachfront restaurants (within walking distance) are fantastic (Lotus in particular).

We spent the Christmas period with friends (who had two children 6 and 4) at Angsana for a week in a 3-bedroom pool villa. We had mixed feelings when booking Angsana as the reviews on Trip Advisor had been really inconsistent but given the positive reviews about its kids club we decided it was the best option.

I’ll start with reviewing the pool villa. On its own the villa would be lucky to make three stars. Upon arrival at the first villa we discovered a construction zone right outside next to the pool fence – with tradesmen and a digger working diligently. Not our idea of a holiday we were quickly transferred to a second villa. This villa was worse, no construction outside but a terrible mold smell throughout – it was extremely pungent and it was obvious that the villa had not been maintained or recently well cleaned. We moved again to a third villa, which was much better, but still featured mold throughout the shower in the ensuite bathroom (at least there was no smell of mold in the villa). There were no other villas available so they sent a cleaner over immediately to deal with the bathroom. Whilst they gave it a good scrub the mold was baked into the tile grout and couldn’t be removed. In the end we decided to put up with it. The staff during the process was very polite but it wasn’t a good way to start a week’s holiday in Phuket. As compensation Angsana provided us with a free meal at one of their restaurants. In reality the villa really wasn’t up to the standard we expected. I’d guess it was built about 15 years ago and whilst the pool area was nice the kitchen and bathrooms were tired. The hot water was problematic – one moment the shower was hot, then mainly cold for the rest. The villa also didn’t feature any washing machine/dryer, which would have been handy given a weeks stay with kids.

If you’re a couple or single person travelling to Phuket then I doubt Angsana is for you (unless you like noisy kids everywhere you go). But if you have children and want a family friendly resort then its worth consideration. There is a free kids club open from 7 am to 9pm over Christmas (I’m told it closes at 6 pm during non holiday periods) and the kids loved it. Heaps of activities kept them entertained everyday. The main resort also features a large pool that meanders throughout the resort. Or you can opt to swim on the beach, which is very clean and the water very warm. The elephant that dropped by the resort each day is entertaining and the complimentary cocktails 5-6 pm daily as part of our package made for relaxing ‘adult time’ (whilst the kids were in the kids club).

When you book a pool villa you are provided breakfast in the Bodega grill restaurant in the main resort area. There is also the Market restaurant for breakfast but this is much more manic and buffet style (Bodega is ala carte). The selection at breakfast and service was very good. Pretty much anything you wanted to eat– from eggs to pancakes, good coffee, incredibly good pastries and fresh fruit.

Complimentary transport is provided to/from the main resort if you rent a villa – it was very quick, never waiting more than 5 minutes. A credit to the staff here.

We also had a massage in the day spa. The service and massage was very good. Equal to any day spa I've tried in America and Europe (probably better in most cases).

Overall if you want a really family friendly resort then consider Angsana. The service was always super attentive and friendly, even with the odd thing lost in translation. If you want something romantic away from children then this is not the place for you.

It’s hard to judge if the villa standard here is better/worse than the rest of Phuket but based on the price over the peak season it didn’t represent enough quality/luxury for the price – so we’ll try another resort on our next Phuket visit.

Room Tip: If booking a villa check it out first before you unpack to ensure it meets the standard you expect...

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review.

I am very happy to know that you and your family enjoyed the wide range of activities of the Tree House Kids Club as well as the signature treatments of the award winning Angsana Spa and the attentive service of our friendly staff.

I regret hearing about the condition of your villa and I apologize for any trouble it caused throughout your stay. I am glad that our staff reacted promptly by allocating you to a villa that better met your standards and by quickly sending additional help to deep clean your bathroom.

Though you have indicated otherwise, it would be a pleasure to have you and your family back, and to provide you with the full Angsana experience.

Beautiful Hotel set around lagoons. I think every room has a lagoon view. Hotel leads directly onto the beach. There is a swimming pool which wraps itself virtually the whole hotel with areas which widen out, including a 'beach' area and swim up bar.
The hotel grounds are amazing especially at night. The service was first class and the staff were friendly and helpful. As it was a quiet week we were upgraded to a two story 'loft' with two balconies and an outside shower.
Bang Tao Bay is beautiful. It is about 6 Kms - about 3Kms in each direction which we walked. It is spattered with beach bars, restaurants, massage places, the odd beach shop. Not too commercial, not in your face, with no hassle but there if you wanted it.
We ate once at the Bang Talay restaurant within the hotel complex - this was good food, with excellent service but perhaps lacked a little atmosphere, and was quite expensive. Most nights we simply strolled along the beach where there are a selection of restaurants within easy walking distance. You can seat on or by the beach, with the sea gently lapping a few feet away and eat wonderful Thai food, by candlelight for less than 500 Bhats a head ( less than £ 10).

Breakfast is served at the Market Place restaurant. The selection of food is fantastic, eggs any which way cooked to order, fruit, Thai, Japanese. Very polite staff. Our only, very undeserved, and minor criticism is that this restaurant is a bit of a walk through cafeteria and we very unkindly renamed it Cattle Market. However do not let that put you off as this is a very picky point in a great hotel, A tip for breakfast is to ask to go on the terrace outside overlooking the lagoon.

We would definitely go back. A great hotel, great facilities, good staff and for us the right combination of tranquil resort and a bit of life on the beach.

Room Tip: If you like swimming opt for a poolside room - with direct access and ladder from your terrace [not...

Fantastic location -- one of, if not the best, location in the entire development. An oasis within an oasis. The Bordega Grill is also a very good restaurant with good service and some level of privacy (very unlike the Market Place restaurant). Best for family holidays. However, the management has to look to do a better job of the maintenance of the island villas - the toilet sometimes gets clogged, the TV does not work at times, and there are cockroaches and lizards. It would be a waste if the Angsana management does not do its job to maintain such a great location.

I stayed there in the month of May. The place is very serene when compared to lot of other resorts in Phuket. It is in one of the quieter locations of Phuket. Its a good place if you want a relaxed holiday. The hotel staff were very helpful. I enjoyed my stay during my trip. Though the food in the restaurants are quite okay I will suggest to move out and try the local flavors and varieties at small joints.

Room Tip: If you like to swim than ask for rooms facing the pool in the ground floor. You can access the pool...
