We spent 5 nights at Arinara and loved it. The garden view pool access room was fantastic, with verandah access to a long quiet pool in a garden setting. This pool can only be seen and accessed from pool access rooms so is very private. The resort itself is large, well maintained and opens directly on to the beach. Bang Tao Beach is lovely but is very long which meant it was hot long walk to get to most of the on beach restaurants from the resort. The resort is horse shoe shaped around the large main pool and features several bars and eateries. These were all mostly very good although we had one forgettable evening meal at the Grill that was marred by confused but very polite staff getting most orders wrong and lengthy waits for average meals despite very few diners. The resort staff were all very friendly and mostly provided efficient and prompt service. The buffet breakfast was as good as any we've experienced and Alex the Pool Manager showed that pool managing is not his only skill, he was a great host each morning at breakfast, we never had to ask or wait for coffee. Tip for great cheap evening meals, turn right at the beach entrance and stroll 100 meters to Sea Sea (look for the tables on the sand and 2 young local boys running towards you waving menus), fine Gilligan's Island decor and great service from the hilarious Mumma.

Room Tip: For couples, get garden view pool access rooms.

When I first booked this hotel, I was dubious - there were next to no trip advisor reviews (always a worry!) and no information about the hotel , as if it were a new build. However, we booked through Thomson and took the risk, as it was about £1000 cheaper per person than the other hotels in the area.

When you approach the hotel, down a dirt track lane that looks like it's in the middle of nowhere, you might start to panic! But when you pull into the hotel lobby, you start to relax a little. The reception staff are friendly and efficient, and we were sent directly to our room even though it was only 9am.

The room
We upgraded to a pool entrance pool, the room itself had two huge rooms, each with a super king sized bed, wooden divider screens, flat screen TV, fridge and coffee making facilities. The balcony leads straight into a narrow pool that can only be accessed by the rooms overlooking it. The only downside was that the sun never hit our side of the pool so the water was always freezing!! If we'd been on the other side of the hotel it would've been amazing, as they had the sun all day.

Pool and facilities
The hotel is set in a horseshoe shape around a large pool (which includes a children's pool) which leads down to the beach. There is a swim up beach bar with happy hour from 4 til 7. The pool was clean and warm and there were plenty of loungers, although there was a distinct problem with people leaving towels (the night before!!) and then not using the loungers. There's a small supermarket on site, but it's open at odd hours, so it's best to use the shops down the road from the hotel.

Restaurants and bars
Pool bar - small selection, not bad food, from some thai dishes, to pizzas and sandwiches.

Beach bar - set right in the beach front, happy hour cocktails and comfy big lounging chairs

Arinara restaurant and grill- really great food and often live music, but unfortunately not well populated so you'd often be sitting as the lone people in the restaurant!

Restaurants outside the resort:
Along the road from the front of the hotel- 4 or 5 decent restaurants offering cheaper food than the beachfront

Along the beach
Within 2km of the resort there are about 15 restaurants (some better than others!)

Beach
Bangtao beach is a 6km stretch of white sand, with plenty of restaurants, a few bars, stalls during the day, elephant rides for the kids, and massage stations. There are sun loungers outside the hotel, good value for the day. We did get put off the beach however, as the neighbouring Sunwing hotel expelled it's waste DIRECTLY into the sea next to our swimming area! There was an actual river of faeces at one point, which they shored up so it wasn't dribbling onto the beach - leaving a "pond" of excrement, 20foot from when where people were eating and swimming: absolutely disgusting!! My partner was really Ill for two days after swimming in the sea there, after which we just avoided the sea.

Overall, the hotel was fantastic value and in a great location, with loads of tours available from the hotel and nearby. The restaurants and bars were good, and the room was brilliant. Certainly somewhere I enjoyed spending two weeks!!

Dear Clare_Ska,
Greetings!
Thanks for sparing your valuable time to write very detailed review about our resort.
We are glad to learn that you had a pleasant stay with us.
As mentioned in your comment we are located on Bangtao beach which is also home to some super luxury resort of Laguna Area. Though we are much more economical option compared to our luxurious neighbours but out motto is to offer super value for money and you can see from the various comments, that we have been well appreciated by our guests.

The dirt road in front of the hotel has been fixed by local authorities so no more potholes and sinking feeling as you approach the resort.

The waste water stream mentioned in your comment is also being looked into by the municipal Corporation.
Authorities have zero tolerance for establishment dumping untreated water in the sewage. Regular checks are being conducted and heavy fines are imposed on non compliant establishments.
In nut shell waste water situation is much better now.

Once again thanks a lot for opting to stay with us and we look forward to welcome you again soon.
Best regards

This is a very well maintained resort. Room was clean and spacious. Kids had a great time enjoying the various pools. The beautiful beach just steps away. Lots of jellyfish in the sea at this time of the year though, so not too conducive for swimming.

Each morning, hotel staff would place folded beach towels on sun loungers for the convenience of guests, which I thought was a nice touch. Breakfast was good too, with both indoor and outdoor sitting areas. Wifi was weak in room, just head to the lobby or restaurant if really need to.

This resort is truly value for the price and yes I would certainly return.

Dear Buds_73,
Greetings and thanks for sharing your views about our resort.
We are happy to learn that your had a good stay with us.

unfortunately you could not swim in the sea due to jelly fishes, there is period of 2 weeks in March or April when we get too many jelly fishes. We keep an eye on the situation and advise guests accordingly. Apart from these two weeks it is pretty safe to swim between November to April.
As for sea condition it is advised to follow flag warning system.

Thanks again and we look forward to your return visit.

Me and my family stayed here for a week in February and to be honest didn't expect it to be that great a hotel that it really was since it only was classified as a 3+ star hotel by our travel agency. There is not much to fault, the room was spacious, the service was great and all the staff was very friendly. The location with direct beach access was fantastic and the pool area was superb for the kids. We were travelling with small children and it was a great area in the pool for the youngest with a generous sun-shade to keep them protected from the sun.
I had also been in contact with the hotel before our trip, asking them to arrange with wine and fruit on our room on our arrival as a surprise to celebrate my fiancee's birthday. This was no problem and I was also informed that they would give us a complimentary birthday cake which was very nice especially since his birthday actually was two days before our arrival. The cake was really nicely made with his name on it and all.
The only thing on the dowside would perhaps be the slow wifi, but on the other hand it was free, which was more than some other hotels we stayed at...
Overall, Bangtao Beach is a nice location and very family friendly with many restaurants directly on the beach. We can warmly recommend it and would love to come back some day.

We had a wonderful six days at the Arinara, finding it the perfect place to relax after a busy two and a half weeks in Bangkok and northern Thailand.

Since the pool closes in early evening and many people eat and drink outside the resort, or have young children with an early bedtime, it is very quiet at night – exactly what we were looking for.

The Room: We were lucky to receive a free upgrade to room 5310, a junior suite with more space than the deluxe double room that I had reserved. It was clean, the towels were large and thick, the bed was comfortable and everything worked well. We enjoyed the rainshower.

Restaurant: Breakfast was good, lots of variety, and you can have omelettes cooked to order. Some muesli cereal would have been nice, but its absence was not a big deal. We loved the Hawaiian night buffet which had a performance by Polynesian fire dancers. We had one meal from the a-la-cart Thai menu and enjoyed.

Neighbourhood: There is a taxi stand and ATM just outside the hotel, and several restaurants down the street. There are also tailors who will offer to make you a new suit or dress, a laundry, two small convenience stores, a tour agency, and other assorted businesses. (You can explore the neighbourhood on Google street view before your arrival.) We ate twice at the excellent Durham restaurant.

Staff: We found the staff to be very friendly. Most understood enough English to be of assistance, and if the person on the reception desk did not understand your problem the person next to him/her would offer to help.

WIFI: The wifi signal was functional, but not strong.

House Band: We enjoyed the easy-listening classics of the house band who play at the steakhouse near the beach. A special thanks to the singers for playing our requests.

Pool: There is a wonderful pool physically separated into three sections. The middle section is a children’s pool that in turn is divided into three sections for different ages. There was a sun canopy over the area for toddlers. The section closest to the main entrance is a salt water pool – don’t know about the other two sections.

Beach: There is a beautiful long sandy beach, perfect for running, swimming and walking. There are lots of affordable restaurants along the beach for lunch, shops selling beach clothing and souvenirs, and places offering massages. There were a few vendors walking the beach selling food and souvenirs, but they did not bother us.

Disabled: Three of the other guests were in wheelchairs. The hotel appears to have originally been built to be wheelchair-accessible, as there are ramps almost everywhere, and the pool has a gentle sloped entry. However, at some point a 20 centimetre high platform was erected on top of the walkway as it approaches the beach, but with steps rather than a ramp. This may pose a challenge for those in wheelchairs wanting to reach the beach or the buffet area of the steakhouse. It could easily be corrected by turning the steps into a gentle sloping ramp.

Tours: The Russian travel companies that brought in many of the other guests offered excursions to their clients. For the rest of us, there are taxi tours available just outside the hotel, a tour desk down the street from the hotel, and a tour desk on the beach as you leave the hotel. We looked at the brochures for the group tours but thought that their fixed itineraries had too many stops that did not interest us.

Instead, we found an excellent private guide (Jo) through the internet who only took us where we wanted to go:

http://tourguide-phuket.blogspot.ca/

The Bottom Line: We would make the Arinara our first choice should we return to Phuket.

Room Tip: Take a room facing the pool.

Your suggestion to construct ramps by the beach side is well noted.
