“Paradise after 16:00”
Reviewed 30 October 2012 via mobile

Rays island is a beautiful place..... Although the flocks of chinese day trippers ruin somewhat of a perfect location that all ends at 16:00 when the speed boats leave....

That is also when the sun eases to let you bathe without roasting and enjoy the crystal beaches......

The bungalows have a lot of character, there little bamboo huts facing the sea..... Right out the way and fairly private.....

There very basic but clean and Robinson cruso style castaway setting adds to the romance.....

You have to eat and drink at the bar, but they go easy considering they have you by the gonads!

Chang is 100 baht for a small bottle meals cost average of 150 baht each

staff are freindly and helpfull!!

There are big monitor lizards to watch for on a night too there harmless but watch for them!

The place to stay if budget is a factor!

I enticed three friends to Koh Raya on the promise that hundreds of day trippers would come and go, leaving us feeling smug that we were staying for a few nights. None of us prone to feeling smug under any circumstances, but we sure were glad to stay for sunset - sitting at the bamboo bar on the beach as the tide came in around our feet, having just one more mai tai...
The bungalows are basic but absolutely sufficient.
The most memorable meal (fresh fish in ginger, lemongrass and chilli) of the holiday at Bungalow Raya, and the best swimming by far at Patok bay. The walk over the hill to Siam Bay is not well sign posted but worth exploring to find the short cuts - find the big white house on the hill behind the Bungalows, and head down the concrete staircase that leads to the back of the bar and onto the beach. Quiet, idyllic and shallow for 100m out.
Reluctant to review - it still feels a bit like a well kept secret.

We stayed five days at Bungalow Raya Resort on Koh Racha Yai, and loved it. The bungalows are small - just one room with a bathroom, and a deck out front. The room had a double bed (hard) with a mosquito net, and a single bed which we dragged out on to the deck and used as a lounge. The bay is just beautiful, clear waters and boats at anchor.

There is only power from 6pm to 6am, so the only downside is there is no fridge in the room. No a/c either, but the bungalows overlook the bay, and seem to get breezes.

There is a restaurant which is built out over the rocks of the bay, food here is good and well priced. The staff were friendly, and reserve waterfront tables for guests at lunchtime, as the resort also runs daytrips from Chalong which includes lunch, so it can get busy then.

We explored most of the tracks around the island and found our favourite part was Lah Bay on the other side, about 10-12 minutes walk. Deck chairs and great snorkling, and a lazy lunch at Coco Bar overlooking the bay.

Also a couple of great restaurants in the little village at the centre of the island, and the Father Resort behind this has a well stocked general store. If you are planning on doing a dive, the prices at the village store are cheaper that anywhere else.

We noticed there are no dogs on the island, at first we thought it was for protection of the large lizards that roam the island, but one of the locals told us it was because most islanders are muslim and don't keep dogs. Plenty of cats tho.

We were surpised that the price of the stay at Bungalow Raya included transfers to and from Chalong Bay. Note this does not include the speedboat trip which is 1500 baht return, we got a lunch included on the first day, not sure if this is standard.

We moved here from Raya Father Resort, which we did not like because that place was in the middle of the island and it was hot with no breeze. Bungalow Raya Resort has 16 bungalows, all on rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean, with a wonderful ocean breeze. The bungalows are old, but charming in their own way - wood bungalows, with a nice sized porch on every one. These bungalows are the best value on this entire island, if you want to be right by the ocean. The only other inexpensive place to stay is Raya Father, and the rest are high-end resorts, at about $100/night or more, and for The Racha, at $200/night. Bungalow Raya Resort is on the same beach as The Racha, Patok Bay. We were there in May, the beginning of the "low season", and we got a bungalow just walking in. But the staff said from October to April, you need to call ahead of time to reserve a bungalow, because they are always full. From the bungalow, you walk down about 20 stairs to their restaurant, which is right on the rocks and the beach. Another 50 meter walk on a walkway brings you to the white sandy beach, that is in front of The Racha. It is about 700-800 meters walk from the west side to east side of this small island so you can easily walk to other bays and beaches. We found the staff very helpful. They even found some children's beach toys for my girls to use for our 4 days there. If you are looking for an inexpensive place on Raya Island, this is the best value. However, the bungalows are old so do not expect pristine conditions (see photos). It was fine for us, with 2 small children, for 3 nights, and we had a great time!
