“Nice resort but could be so much better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 November 2013

The location is great with wonderful views and it's easy to walk around the island to the other bays. It's well worth staying for a night or two just be aware that between about 12.30 and 2.30pm the resort is flooded with day trippers, mostly Chinese, about 90 per day. As long as you go and have your lunch elsewhere on the island that won't be a problem.
The staff are not at all friendly at Ban Raya. They are mostly Burmese teenagers and seemed pretty sullen. A few Thai smiles would've been nice. We booked a superior room and a standard room but on check in they told us that there were no longer any standard rooms so were given two superiors. The restaurant was hit and miss. Everywhere on the island you pay island prices 50-100% more than on Phuket. The over all impression with Ban Raya is that it's nice but could be so much better.

Wonderfull hotel near the sea with private beach that you can not use for swimming, just for snorkeling.
It has a wonderful swimming pool and the views over the hill are excellent.
The food and the price of the meal was unexpensive.
The curtains are not quite large for the required size of the windows in the bungalows.
Breakfast excellent with the manificent views.
A bar that opened until late would be desirable

This is a really beautiful island and Ban Raya is a very pretty resort. Lovely pool, coconut groves and Kon Kare Bay for snorkelling all great (swim further out where the coral is still alive). Preferred this resort to the others as beach at Batok Bay had very wild surf and Siam Bay beach was pretty but rocky. Good for a quiet vacation in a pretty location. Downside-6 nights in an average room with a very dirty verandah, staff with poor language skills (found out they were mostly foreign workers from Burma) including the receptionist who did not understand that 2 of our bags were missing from the boat. Essentially no manager at resort. Most helpful staff member was the older man who managed the transportation of tourists to and from the boat who helped find the bags. Daily, about 100 day-trippers mostly from China come to use the restaurant and pool so avoid those areas then. Ate most meals at Raya Divers restaurant in the centre of the island-take flashlights for walking at night! Coco's too was good. Very hard to work out transport to Raya Island thru booking company and hotel itself as I called and the receptionist did not speak English so came with one of the tour groups which worked out OK (Raya Father), although might have cost more (1300THB return including hotel pickup and return, lunch and snorkelling trip, with fruit and drinks on the boat-very bumpy trip though).

We chose Ban Raya because it seemed to offer the value for money on the little island of Koh Racha. We booked through booking.com (never again). The good things. The little private beach offers the best snorkelling I have encountered, it was like diving into an old Windows 98 screensaver. breathtaking. Even better than the day tour we did out to the offshore Similian islands. The resort is away from the isalnds main beach, which I think is a blessing. The resort is quite large and the pool area is great. but his was about where it ended. The staff at the restaurant were not up to scratch (this is in comparison to other staff throughout our 4 week SE Asia trip). They twice stopped speaking to me to instead go over and serve a loud, borish Russian man...it was pretty odd. The food? Ok, but was nto value for money and mediorce at best. The smoothies were pretty delish though! Room was so so, but we knew that coming into it. Basic, no complaints there.
But Ban Raya managed to sting me long after we left the island. As I said I had booked thorugh Booking.com, paid a deposit and paid the remainder of my bill upon check-out. We had originally booked for 2 nights but had to ammend it down to one because fo flight and ferry times. This was done 6 weeks before even leaving New zealand and was done through Booking.com, as Ban Rayas agent. Anyway, all paid up and then three days after checking out I have the exact equivilent of 2 nights in a ban raya room taken out of my debit account (which booking.com and ban raya have the details for as per a normal booking process).
well, being on a bit of a student/backpacker budget holiday, this made a bit of a dent in my bank account and while waiting for the drawer of the funds to show up in my account I got quite stressed. Ban Raya could not have been more unhelpful! Emails went unanswered. Calls were passed around and then I was hung up on more than once. I couldnt believe it. I know that there may have been a small English-Thai language barrier, but we could have worked through it, heck they do that on a daily basis. So one decent conversation to explain the muck-up and arrange arefund wouldn't have hurt. Booking.com were equally unhelpful, despite it being their issue..I believe it arose when I ammended the booking down to one night, and instead of editing the booking there was simply another booking added to my name. A simple mistake, but one that nobody wanted to take responsibility for. I couldnt get over how these supposed hospitality companies would be so unhelpful when they stuffed up. In the end, I gave up on Ban Raya, since their manager or reception administrator hung up on me for the third time. I just got my bank back in NZ to rip the money back out of their account, claiming it was for services not recieved. Cheeky! Lesson learned, Prepaid Agoda vouchers all the way.

Expected a bit more, the resort is fairly large with most of the rooms hidden in the jungle. Rooms are ok but nothing special. Aircon is working in superior rooms only from 18:00 till 08:00 the next day.

Receptionstaff are friendly, however the restaurant staff could use some more motivation. Food quality is so-so, breakfast wasnt the best we had seen in Thailand. Most dishes were uncovered and swarmed with flies. Think i've ate three days of toast only and had some serious stomach issues during our stay.

One thing to keep in mind is that this hotel is litarally swarmed with aprox 70-100 daytrip tourists from 12:00 till 15:00 every day, occupying most of the space near the pool and the snorkelbay. I think this resort main priority is to entertain/maintain daytrip tourists instead of resortguests.

A little bit run down and to much people during day, occupying the little beach. The restaurant was a bit boring, go to Coco at Lha bay instead. The reef is a bit dead because of the high temperature in the sea. Many speedboats get to close to the beach and drops an anker on the corrals. Nice and quiet during the evening.
