“Most Wonderful Place in the World”
Reviewed 7 February 2013

If you've ever fantasized about spending time in an unbelievably charming and picturesque village, Puycelsi is the place to go. L'Ancienne Auberge provides spacious, comfortable rooms and some of the best food in France, using local recipes and ingredients. Our room overlooked a village square that might be the setting for an opera. We could watch villagers emerge from the magnificent boulangerie. The auberge was hosting an indoor Christmas Market with an array of wonderful hand-made products. We arrived at the inn late and jet-lagged, yet the chef provided a magnificent three-course meal that was worthy of a Michelin star. The pastel bath products from Toulouse are amazing. Dorothy is a friendly and attentive hostess. We cannot wait for the opportunity to return!

Room Tip: We were in Rooms 1 & 2 and were absolutely delighted with the decor and view.

Chef Dorothy, an American, rents several wonderful rooms in this delightful medieval village, in addition to preparing celebrated meals. The property is indeed ancient and beautifully restored in the public areas, while the sleeping rooms are new, spacious, tasteful and uptodate in all respects.
We'll long remember both Puycelci and the hospitality of the Ancienne Auberge.

In the beautiful and peaceful place, this hotel is really recommended. We had breakfast in the morning and we had diner in hotel. The bistro menu is really nice, with good quality food. Also the waiter recommended nice local wine. The staff is very friendly and very relaxed.

We spent a week in this wonderful medival town. We were able to rent a 2 bedroom apartment that is owned by the hotel. It was beautiful, nicely appointed and had a stellar view of the wonderful countryside. The hotel restaraunt is one of the best we have visited and the owners are welcoming and gracious. The town is located near many wonderful small villages and towns and there are many vineyards to visit if that is to your liking. I would return in a heartbeat!

The Ancienne Auberge is located in the impossibly quaint fortified hilltop village of Puycelci.  The inn contains less than ten rooms and is partially built into a 13th century presbytery. The rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished. We stayed in room 5 on the top floor (there aren't any elevators!) which has very large windows wrapping around two sides which provided great view of the church and several streets.  It was a good deal for €75 for the night.

Dining in the hotel is an absolute must. We ate dinner in the courtyard which is a wonderful
setting and the three course, €25 meal was a steal given the quality and quantity of the food (there is a bistro menu so be careful).  There are no a la carte items and choices were limited between two appetizers, two main courses and three desserts.  We all went with the tomato "plate" to start. It contained an eclectic assortment of tomato based items include a tomato sorbet(!), a cubed tomato salad, tomato aspic together with a mozzarella croquette  The main course choices were duck and cod - both were plentiful and perfectly cooked (and presented).  Dessert was fabulous and we chose the sampler plate which included a brioche, carmelized bananas and a chocolate ice cream.

Our group agreed it was one of the best meals we had since arriving in France, including dinners at Chez Georges and La Vaudeville in Paris.

Room Tip: Room 5 pn the top floor offers a panorama of the church square.

We recently came upon this beautiful little town of Puycelsi by accident. This town and this auberge is calm and quiet, very relaxed. A great place to get away for a few days. The auberge is in the middle of the town across from the small old church.
Our room on the top floor (#5) had beautiful views overlooking the rooftops and into the hills beyond. Very picturesque. We also had a lovely view of the small square below in front of the church. The room was nicely decorated and the bathroom modern with nice toiletries.
There is a pretty restaurant diningroom as well as a lighter bistro area around a fireplace. We opted for the demi pension which included the room, dinner and breakfast the next morning. The food was wonderful. We had a delicious entree of fresh asparagus with scallops in a light sauce. It was one of the better entrees we have ever had. As there were not that many people there (it was off season) they had prepared a main meal of meat but were ever so gracious to prepare me a wonderful piece of fish when I had said that I was not a meat eater. Breakfast we had a choice from their menu so we chose the ham and eggs as we had not had it anywhere during our stay in France. Of course, that is not a typical French breakfast but the owner is an expat from New York and perhaps still remembers a typical North American diet.
This is a cute little town to just hang out and do nothing and relax. Otherwise you are not far from Albi, a fantastic and interesting town, as well as the town of Gaillac and Toulouse is not far either.
I would recommend this Auberge anytime and hope to get back there myself someday again soon.

We stayed here for two nights and had a lovely time. The food is amazing (the owner/chef, Dorothy, and her cook, Jean-Denis, produce the most wonderful meals made with fresh ingredients). The foie-gras is wonderful.

The little village of Puycelsi is lovely and quiet. If you are looking to relax and disconnect from the hubub of everyday life, this is a good place to go (this would include little internet usage as it is not very strong and must be used downstairs, not in the room, but that is not a bad thing).

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back of the hotel so the sound of the bells from the church tower don't ke...
