“Exceeds Expectations”
Reviewed 12 October 2011

Staying at Le Mas de Salel is like being treated as if you were a cherished relative that has come to visit. Françoise, Nicolas, the cooks, housekeepers, and guides were attentive, cheery, flexible, and fluent in French, English, and German. Excellent menu upon excellent menu came out of the kitchen. The food was interesting, healthy, and local. At the table, conversation was lively and engaging with lots of laughter. The accommodations have been created out of the farmhouse and barn, a well-done renovation highlighting thick, stone walls against natural wood paneling with all of the modern conveniences of individual bathrooms, kitchenettes, and washing machines. The pool overlooks the nearby village. A big screen TV is in the common room and wireless internet is available on the terrace. All of this is set in the incredible landscape of hills and high plateaus. Weekly activities, chosen from a list of historical (e.g. medieval castles of the Knights of Templar and Hospitalier), cultural (e.g. the caves of Roquefort cheese), and natural (e.g. the Tarn river) items, were nicely paced. Special outings, such as going to visit a farm to pet the animals, were offered for children. Or one could set off from le Mas de Salel to explore this gorgeous countryside on a hiking trail on foot or on the nearly empty roads on one of their mountain bikes, equipped with one of their maps. There was no need for a car. Nicolas drove me to and from the airport and the outings were by car or van. Le Mas de Salel is a first-rate destination with warm hospitality and great attention to detail. I can hardly wait to return.

We stayed at Mas de Salel for two weeks this July, and had a great time.

The appartment "Cartabelle" (see the German review from June 2010) was perfect for our family (2+2) and the renovated farm managed by Francoise Blanquet is simply wonderful. You will enjoy being her guests during your stay.

We did not take full board, but it wasn't a problem to join the rest of the full board guests for a few evenings -- just ask! There's also a nice large grill near the pool for holding an impromptu barbecue.

The pool is just the right size for our children (7 and 12) and there was plenty to do nearby to keep us occupied.

MdS is in the middle of nature, so don't expect an urban 24x7 hotel complex atmosphere. Our kids marvelled at the landscape populated with deer, bats, snakes, cats, dormice, lizards, foxes (!) and a fantastic star-filled sky each night. If you have a telescope, bring it.

Bringing a car with you is also a good idea -- Montagnol is quite small and residential only -- but there are plenty of daytrips to enjoy. You'll find petrol and shopping for groceries in St. Affrique (Super U) or Millau (Leclerc). A couple of times a week a local farmer comes by with fresh produce for MdS, and his fruit and vegetabels are very good.

You can go to the beach at St. Pierre sur Mer, the beach club called "Bikini" is great for the day and has a full restaurant for dinner.

You can go biking -- MdS has a number of well-kept mountain bikes for you to borrow for a day or two. The hills behind MdS are a dream for bikers who enjoy wild singletracks and jumping barbed-wire fences. There's a good 20km tour starting just behind the farm and going up in the hills behind Laval and back -- but bring a good map and don't trust everything that Google Maps shows you.

You can go canoeing/kayaking on the Tarn. We went twice, once with the family and once with just me and my daughter, it was great and tiring fun.

There are also touristy things like Roquefort, La Couvertoirade, and the Millau viaduct that are must-sees, but I enjoyed best the time reading by the poolside, or drinking my coffee in the fresh morning air while the rest of the family sleeps in.
