I've had the pleasure of visiting much of Andalusia throughout the last 4 years. La Posada de Alajar ranks at the top of my list in several categories.

Accommodations: Incredible attention to detail using local, nature-based products. You feel like you're at home and feel so relaxed and comfortable you don't want to leave. My room was on the ground floor and had double panned French doors that opened to lush green grass with direct access to the pool and views of the hills. Each morning I was greeted by the most wonderful hosts who prepared breakfast for me (included in the price) incorporating the most typical flavors and foods of the area (with 10 different types of olive oil...who would have thought!).

Nature: The Posada is located in the quaint town of Alajar with hardly any tourists. You get a real flavor for the culture and get to enjoy beautiful trails along rivers and through tiny villages without the typical crowds. The tiny town itself has a couple great places to eat and a lovely plaza with views of the historic church.

Activities: Angel and Lucy (the owners) can give you a wealth of activities and trails you can enjoy. They have walked many of the trails themselves and have documented them in their own maps. They love to share their information which makes you feel pampered. Horseback riding, hiking, caving, repelling, canoeing, wine tasting and more...take your pick! The real joy was signing up for private yoga classes with Susanne in the morning and watching the sun rise over the majestic canyons and mountains of southern Spain, truly sacred and unforgettable!

Really cannot understand such good reviews of this hotel. Can only think they didn't stay on the ground floor, as when staying there you could even hear the nuts being cracked at breakfast, there was no chance of a relaxing lie in.

We found Alajar, and La Posada quite by chance, having taken a detour through the hills around Aracena.

Despite having a slightly 'quirky' room in the attic (we hadn't booked and I think it was the last available), La Posada is a lovely palce to stay. The lovely owners made a real effort to make us welcome, and even suggested a walk in the hills to take before supper.

The breakfast - taken in their other hotel the 'San Marcos' (five minutes walk away) - was fantastic. Different local breads, jams, oils and pates.

A place to go back to !

We spent five days in Alajar, staying at La Posada de Alájar (the older establishment in the village) and fitted right in. Yes, La Posada de San Marcos (their new hotel down the road) has a lot more to offer, but we rather liked being in the centre of the village with its balcony looking over the town square. It is a little scruffy, but it was comfortable and suited us down to the ground. The owners (Lucy and Angel) were super and went to a lot of trouble to ensure we had all the information and facilities we needed. They are both mines of information and we spent ages just chatting to them about the area and culture. We were incredibly fortunate with the weather and had four days of amazing walking, helped by the picture guide books and a map supplied by Lucy. Alajar is pretty small village and you have to get into the rhythm of the place to really enjoy it. Shops, bars and restaurants seem to open and close according to the whims of their owners, so adopting a flexible attitude is pretty important and means you get a new adventure every day. The best thing about Alajar is that it's off the tourist map so you get a genuine Spanish experience with incredible food, scenery and atmosphere at very affordable prices. It is amazing that this hasn't been 'discovered' as it has so much going for it. We loved it and will definitely return.

Room Tip: The church bells chime all night - twice! - so if you're a light sleeper chose a room that's...

This is actually two "hotels" one in the main street and a more up-mrket one in a side street where you take breakfast. We were met by one of the owners, who is English originally and fantastically helpful and pleasant. We stayed in the cheaper village posada which was fine as we were only staying a night but when we go back we'll stay at the San Marco main building where we had a gorgeous breakfast with home made and organic products. The rooms in that building are higher quality and there is an open air heated swimming pool. This is an absolute treasure of a place in a beuatiful village. Lucy gave us agret recommendation for dinner that night in one of the local restaurants where we had fabulous food and wine in a rustic atmosphere. The village is a popular location with Spaniards and others for hill walking etc. and is very picturesque. The whole area near Arecena in the mountains is beautiful and well worth visiting.

Room Tip: Sty in the more expensive building if you want a really lovely outlook

Three older men on a walking holiday and stayed for four nights . The hotel is better described as an Inn and has a rural quality that goes with the lovely village in which it is situated . I agree with the earlier reviews of these premises and endorse the complimentary comments made by them .We had no complaints and were well looked after . It is the cheaper accomodation of the two premises run by Lucy and Angel in this village and if you want a more upmarket hotel the Posada de San Marcos is worth the extra money
