“Warm, efficient and well-run”
Reviewed 22 July 2012

I was sent on a last minute dash to Gainsborough for work, and was lucky enough to find the Hickman Hill hotel online on my way up on the train. They were pleasant on the phone, happy to wait up until 11pm for me on request and swift and efficient showing me to my room.
My room itself, the John Hook, was gorgeous and great value for money - huge bed, big desk to work on (and internet cable which saved precious minutes), big TV and lovely bathroom with waterfall shower.
They allowed me to check out late (for a very fair extra cost) and co-owner Michelle spent a while chatting to me and advising me on the best way to get home and where to grab lunch while I waited to get the okay from my boss to head home.
Sadly, I didn't get a chance to eat dinner there (though the breakfast was great) as I hear the food is fantastic.
If I ever found myself in the area again, I'd definitely be happy to stay in the Hickman Hill once again.

Room Tip: John Hook room is newly refurbished, comfortable and quiet

Ok, to be brutally honest, I would need to have a good reason to visit Gainsborough again.
But if I did, I would not hesitate going back to the Hickman Hill.

The reason I booked here was for its proximity to the Hemswell antiques centre, and a client who wanted a change from Lincoln. I had misgivings when I first saw the town and just two stars for the hotel, but there were some pleasant surprises.

The rooms were fine and big enough.
The hosts were charming and obviously well-liked by regular guests.
Best of all was the food, which was excellent.

A very interesting place, full of contrasts. The decor could do with some updating! The bedroom certainly needed some help, especially the bathroom. But the bed was very comfortable and the linen new and good quality. These are the only negative comments. The lady owner couldn't do enough for her guests. The food was superb. We had the best rib-eye steaks we have eaten in this country. The chef actually knew how to cook a blue steak. The breakfast was brilliant, with the biggest bowl of fruit salad I have ever seen, and all of it was fresh! And the cooked breakfast was cooked to order. All the ingredients are sourced locally, and you can taste it. The home made marmalade was superb. Best food in a long time!!

Very disappointing. The lady owner was very pleasant and very courteous but this didn't make up for a below average and overpriced stay. The bed was very clean and comfortable which nearly compensated for the well below standard room decor and aged bathroom. The curtains and carpet looked like they had been there since the 70s!The breakfast was ok, service was good but I certainly would NOT be comfortable in recommending this as a place to stay unless you want to pay even more to get an upgraded room. In summary, the owner tried hard to please but the standard of the hotel does not merit the price asked. I'll be staying in a local B&B next time! Sorry Hickman Hill Hotel but you're not up to standard.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room

Had a super stay at the Hickman Hill Hotel while visiting Lincoln Christmas market. The charming hosts could not have been more helpful and the food was as excellent as the hospitality. Will definately stay there again if I'm in the area. Many thanks - Julia
