Most of the fortress was built between 1840 and 1890, but the main building of the hotel, containing the restaurant and the reception, is new. The guest rooms are in the former baracks for the officer pupils. This is also a newer and well maintained building. Each room is en suite and has fjord view. Otherwise, the rooms emerge as rudimentary, with two beds, tv, a writing desk and not much more. There is no internet connection in the rooms, but there is free internet in the restaurant building and in the conference rooms.
The beds were firm an comfortable, but personally I don't like the fluffy synthetic pillows that are popular at Norwegian hotels these days. They don't support the head well, I think.
The hotel has a spa that we didn't try.
The small island is quite picturesque and interesting. In winter, it is very quiet, but the small ferry connecting the island to the mainland (Drøbak) goes every hour most of the day. It takes about ten minutes across the sound. The hotel will provide a guide to show you the fortifications and tell about the battle in 1940, when the fortress sunk the German battle ship "Blücher".
Supper was good, lunch was average for a Norwegian business hotel - that is a rather good selection, but nothing very good or special.
For a planning seminar in winter, it is near perfect. For a family or couple, it might be a bit dull in winter. But in summer, it should be next to perfect.
