Set in a stunning location at the western end of the Crinan canal, this eccentrically wonderful hotel is just amazing. It manages to be cosy, comfortable (rooms and public areas) and to serve up a mouth watering menu of sea and not sea foods, both in the restaurant and in the bar. The staff are friendly, helpful, very experienced and did everything they could to make our stay special. They succeeded!
It is just so refreshing to go and stay somewhere that is that bit different (in a good way) from everywhere else. If you get the chance, go for it - you won't be disappointed!

Could a place be more beautifully located? Well if you love the sea, and yachts and islands, and peace, the Crinan is a 'must visit'. We booked a twin and got the third floor, facing over the sea with a private balcony. Great arrival, friendly receptionist, helpful, hotel presents very well downstairs in the public areas.
The bad news. It strikes me that whoever cares for the public rooms needs a closer look at what the paying guests receive. There are no disasters, but a series of small niggles which take the edge of what should have been a great visit. Crinan should be a 4star experience, but in the end it isn't, it's 3.
The Heating was off and there's no hot water. "It's just coming on sir (5.30pm) and is slow to arrive upstairs".
When it does arrive, we discover the sink doesn't drain...or to be fair, takes 5 minutes to empty. I phone reception three times to ask for hints but no-one answers. I go downstairs and discover that only some of the room phones work. Ours isn't one of them.
The table cloth is stained with the last guests red wine.
The following day the room is cleaned, but the toiletries are not replaced until we ask reception.
ETC.

However, and oddly none of this matters to us too much. Experienced world travellers used to 1 star Indian fare are not phased by this stuff, and talking of Fair the Crinan's prices are very good for Hotel B&B standards and anyway the food is excellent. We tried both the bar and the restaurant and on every occasion found it very very good EXCEPT. Not a single vegetarian item on the menu. Not one. So Vegetarians be aware...you're ok at breakfast because they will cook anything you wish (top marks) but in the evening, if you don't eat fish then maybe phone ahead and ask. We didn't ask because my vegetarian eats fish sometimes, but I don't remember a hotel so dismissive of the needs of such a large number of potential guests before. Come on Crinan! Kick your cleaners, teach you chef how to cook some veggie options, find and use a good plumber and you'll be 4star +.
Please, because in every other way, we secretly rather liked the experience!

Room Tip: Maybe rooms lower in the hotel have more efficient plumbing. I think the 2nd floor might be a good c...

Thank you for your comments, they have been dealt with We are sorry for any inconveniance.

In the Seafood Bar there two vegetarian options on the menu at all times.
The Westward Restaurant vegetarian options are available on request. Our guests usually ask us what is available, but since your comments we have written on the menu (vegetarian options are available)

It's position and the views from the hotel are what make it the special place it is. It has a couple of very nice sitting rooms and if it rained during a visit then these would be most welcome to spend time relaxing.
If you arrived in the dark and woke in the bedrooms then you could easily think you were in a standard Scottish guest house. The pine furniture was probably just the thing in the early 1970s together with the thin internal walls, cheap toiletries, no flannels, no loo brush and no biscuits on the hospitality tray. Now, as you are paying at least twice if not three times that of a guest house then the owners must be rubbing their hands with glee. It might be old fashioned until you view the room rates.
Dinner was good in the bar and breakfast was nicely presented although I was surprised not to have a choice of any pastries and only budget marmalade to go with the cheap white, sliced toast.
It is a pleasant place but if you were paying full whack then you may just question why.

We got a mooring just outside the sea lock and were in place to go through the canal in the morning. We were delightfully surprised to get much more than a pub meal. The crab risotto was superlative: soft and tasty. The langoustines so fresh and so sweet served with mild garlic mayo. And the salad dressing ... really really fabulous! The Skipper enjoyed his dressed crab and then the pork sausages. The grumpy owner strode by our table without so much as a nod. Thank goodness the staff know better as each one is friendly, cheerful and helpful.

This hotel is old and quaint....just like its owners
The staff are superb and keep everything running behind the scenes. The chefs deserve their plaudits...the food matched our expectations.....well cooked , fresh and presented well.
The hotel has just had a repaint job done on it but the internals need addressing. Well appointed rooms spoiled by tired furniture and bathroom suits...especially when your paying £180 a night. We came for a chill out and good food and we were not disappointed. My suggestion to Mr & Mrs MacDonald would be spend more money on the internals of the hotel or sell it to someone who will.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms overlooking the locks have less wind Menu and food in the seafood bar excellent....do...

We stayed here again for two nights and were not disappointed.
If you are looking for the most up to date facilities and modern fittings then this isn't for you because the hotel decor and furnishings are a little tired although very comfortable. The views are outstanding and the food really excellent with very generous helpings from friendly staff. We ate in the bar again and it was fabulous

Our stay at Crinan was Enjoyable. Our room overlooking the canal locks was bright and adequately furnished, with comfortable beds and wicker chairs that became uncomfortable after 5 minutes. Our room had a balcony with a fantastic view of the boats coming into the canal. We ate in the bar; the food was excellent.
There are paintings by the owner hung in abundance throughout the hotel and it did sometimes feel like we were intruding in someone's house! Some of the hotel and room facilities are a bit tired and quirky.
Staff couldn't be more helpful and went out of their way to help however they could.
