“EXCELLENTE!”
Reviewed 20 November 2012

We have visited this fantastic resort a number of times now, and it seems like each time it somehow gets better. The food, the drinks, the spa and all of the facilities are superb! But what seems to really make this place great, are the wonderful people that are there. The magnificent general manager and all her staff -- they are all just the best. It seems like they cannot do enough for you to make your stay absolutely EXCELLENT.
We are already planning a return visit next year!

We are a couple ages 80 and 73 who recently returned from our eighth visit to this property. I have written two earlier reviews of it, both of a conventional nature describing the accommodations, food, premises, etc. No need to repeat all that because other reviews provide that information in detail. Instead, my message to readers is simply, "I cannot recommend this hotel too highly!" Note how many other reviewers are either repeaters or recite that they definitely will be coming back. If you, a reader, are looking for a vacation spot, this is the most persuasive evidence that it should be the Playa Mujeres. Disclaimer---there has been no quid pro quo for this review.

Wow, we have just had a lovely holiday here. Went for our anniversary and really enjoyed it. From the moment you arrive nothing is too much trouble. Our concierge Santiago and Viannay were excellent, such nice people. The restaurants were all exceptional, except the Mexican, which let them down, in terms of service and disappointed here with the selection of food! Every restaurant has a vegetarian menu if there is nothing suitable on the main menu, they will even get you something from another restaurant! All the waiting staff are brilliant, special mention to Carlos who served us in the Mediterranean restaurant. The young ladies who show you to your table at breakfast, Jakeline and Gloria are always so happy and polite. The breakfast and lunch buffets are incredible! No problem getting a sun bed and even numerous in the shade for when its too hot! The evening entertainment is average, some of the bands that play before show time are better than the actuals shows!! Drinks are numerous top brands, special mention to Ficendio (think thats how you spell his name!!)in the lobby bar, he makes the best mud slides! Housekeeping and turndown service, fantastic and the man who refills the mini bar is lovely, if you have any special requests, ask and if he can get it, he will! All in all a fantastic relaxing holiday and although we never return to the same hotel twice, I think that this one could prove the exception!

Room Tip: We had room 7122 which had a partial sea view in the distance, was central but quiet!

We spent 8 night at the Excellence and it lived up to it's name. There are lots of reviews on here that are very accurate and it definitely is a very nice all inclusive.

Highlights....
Restaurants - great selection for all tastes. The breakfast and lunch buffets had excellent selection and variety, which surprised us as we are not buffet people. Wonderful selection of fresh fish and lots of tropical fruit. Service by Ramone, was incredible and he is a real asset to the resort.

Bar - Martini bar is really fantastic with lots of atmosphere around dinner time. We loved Cafe Cafe, being outside with a live band, however preferred to have our drinks in glasses so we ended up at the Martini bar most nights.

Music and Entertainment - fantastic bands and live performances every evening. The shows were very enjoyable and we loved the variety of different nightly entertainment.

Rooms - fantastic size rooms, we booked a swim up suite which was definitely a great choice. We were in building 9, which is on the outskirts of the property so had it pros and cons. Quiet in the sense of not many people in this pool or area, but the trucks/buses going by was a little irritating. We did however get a lot of sun, which was nice. We thought that the swim-up suites by the spa would have been nice. We spent most days at this pool and it had great service and was protected from the wind.

Spa - the hydrotherapy treatment is amazing and very unique. Definitely a must do activity whilst you are there. The massage was ok - not the best I have had, but not the worst.

As everybody has already noted, beautiful grounds, bar drinks were great, service is amazing (in almost all areas).

Cons
Front Desk Service - very average both check in and check out. When paying our final bill, they didn't even ask how our stay was, which completely shocked us. The front desk staff didn't compare to the rest of the staff

Temperature of the Pools - the pools were cold, everyone at the pools were commenting on this, and no one could understand why. Just a few degrees warmer would have been nice!

Overall, we had a fantastic experience and would recommend this resort to anyone looking for an all inclusive holiday. The majority of the staff were truly amazing and there hard work definitely did not go unnoticed.

My husband and I spent our 11 year Anniversary here in November. We have been home for 1 day and ready to go back and looking to book again.
Getting out at the resort we were greeted with a cold towel and champagne. The staff took our bags and took us to our room. When we walked in our room I realized it wasnt just a plain junior suite like I booked they upgraded us to Club room. I was so nice and while they were dropping off our bags they asked us if we were celebrating anything and we told them our Anniversary the next thing we know they were hang a Anniversary sign on our door. This place is so amazing and beautiful pictures just dont do it justice. I have never seen a more beautiful place. I had already prepared myself that the food was going to be ok or not that great but to my surprise it was amazing and we only got one thing we didnt like and they sent it back and got me something else. I cant say enough about the friendly staff. We spent most of the time by the pool and the swim up bar. The drinks were really good and they didnt skimp on the liquior either. I booked us a couples massage by the Ocean and it was so realaxing and I will do it again the next time Im there. After the massage you get a chance to so the Aqua Hydrotherapy we really enjoyed it. The EMP was so nice and clean Im picky when it comes to clean so if this has my approval then it is exceptionaly clean. We did tip but we felt no pressure to tip and saw when others didnt there was no difference to how the staff treated them which was so nice to see. I seem to tip more when Im not pressured into it or its expected. I feel the staff went out of their way to make our trip perfect and they were that way with other people. I didnt feel crowded it is a big resort so everyone is spread out. We loved the weather and temps in Nov its 80s in day and 70s at nite. We will be back next November for sure and I cant wait. You will not be disappointed if you book here you will be disappointed if you dont.

This is my third trip to Cancun. All have been at high end all inclusives. This is a great hotel with a couple of exceptions. The main draw back was every pool was cold and there was no "hot" hot tubs. For some reason all the hot tubs were all set to cool or luke warm. The activitites were on the light side but this may be a plus to some who are looking for a more peaceful romantic vacation. The beaches had a lot of sea weed but the staff did a good job on racking the beach on a daily basis. On the plus side the faclity is clean, the staff are friendly, we never had a problem finding a place to enjoy the sun, and the food at the nine resturants is good. Our favorite resturants were Spice, Flavor market and the Grill. Also, Johnathan the resident tennis pro did a great job at the daily tennis clinics. It was fast moving and a good workout to start the morning.

After reading reviews and comments in the forum, I wondered if we had booked the right resort this time. The issues about the beach and some of the recent comments on the wild rowdy crowds gave me pause. Well we just came back from a week at EPM and to start the place is beautiful. We had a great room with a fantastic ocean view in building 7, we didnt opt for excellence club. We arrived early in the day and had about a 3 hour wait for a room. Not ideal but it was ready about the time they list for check in. The resort was VERY full. For the most part not really an issue due to the size of the resort and so many areas to go to. On the subject of the rowdy crowds some have mentioned we experienced this with the large wedding parties and we had more than a few while here. Some days the main pool would have an hour or 2 of the large drunk wedding group, but then it would clear out and be quiet. This was the same at the bars, in the restaurants and even in the halls at night, You had times were it was loud and rowdy but never a real long period. There are also lots of places you can go away from the main pool if you want to avoid it. The pools were very cold when we first arrived but they started pumping the heat into main pool after lots of complaints and by third day it was ok. It was pretty windy while we were here and water rough, the sea grass was very thick. We tried walking the beach but seagrass was so thick away from the resort beach that you couldnt walk I was ready to say this was just a real bad beach, but on our last day water was calm and the sea grass had pretty much vanished over night so then I could see how many have said the beach is great for walking. So on these 2 issues i can see both sides of the reviews and comments kind of depends on what happens while you are here, can go both ways. My biggest complaint is with the food. We had a few below par meals and some not bad. The only really above average restaurant we found was the Flavor Market, it just seemed to be managed better and the food quality was a notch above the other restaurants. The blue cheese steak was the best steak I ever had in Mexico, but the filet in the french restaurant may have rated as the worst. The breakfast buffet was very much a low quality food in warmers affair, for this level of resort it should have far more food being prepared at stations. Secrets Maroma beach had a much better buffet. The pizza at the beach is a nice touch and made for a nice option to stay out at the pool. The beach food was pretty good also. As far as service no complaints everyone is friendly and makes sure you are always being serviced with a smile. The grounds are wonderfull to walk at night and so many areas to explore. If I was rating for the grounds and service I would give a five but the food and beach drop it for me. So overall we had a great time at a beautiful resort, but was not the complete blow me away resort I had hoped for.
