Another wonderful time at EPM! This was our third time at this beautiful, peaceful resort, but will definitely not be our last. We booked a two week stay this time and enjoyed great weather for all but one day, when it rained for the entire day. However, the staff added fun activities in the main building, which helped to entertain everyone who went there.

As always, the staff was top-notch, as was the food, drinks, pools, and gym. My husband and I especially enjoyed the Flavor Market (tapas bar) and Basmati (Indian, which has gotten even better since our last stay here). Cafe Kaffe serves all types of custom coffee drinks, which we also appreciated. We took advantage of the live entertainment each evening, and particularly enjoyed Havana's Band and local singer Claudia Trevino, as well as the theater productions of Michael Jackson Evolution and Madonna. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept; the entire resort is very clean and attractive.

It is our understanding that only the main pool - where the pool bar is located - is heated during cooler months. The other pools were chilly until mid-afternoon. There was only one jacuzzi that could be described as warm. There was always covered seating available, although perhaps not in the location that you wanted.

Although not necessary, we tip the maid, pool service, and waiters. These people give consistently exceptional, friendly service. It doesn't take a lot of money; we take a few hundred dollars in 1s and 5s. Think about it - you tip at home, often for service that is less than stellar - so why not here?

The only complaint that we had was definitely not the fault of the hotel. THIS IS A PEACEFUL, RELAXING, ADULTS-ONLY RESORT. A few of the guests, for some unknown reason, seemed to think that they were at a "party hearty" fraternity house or in Ocean City, MD/Virginia Beach. Not so. If your idea of a good time is to behave like a drunken idiot, please book a room in the Cancun Hotel Zone. Your rights end where everyone else's begin. If you think differently, you will have EPM security at your door with the information that either your behavior improves or you will removed from the premises. We've seen it happen...

Stayed at the excellence for 2 weeks with our 2 children in their early twenties and one of their partners. Rooms were very spacious, we only stayed in the basic junior suites but were very impressed with the facilities in the room.
Choice of restaurants were very varied and we did not have a bad meal. Our favourites were the The grill, Lobster House and flavours. Chez Isabelle was also very good.
Although the venue is classed as a honeymoon romantic place to stay, we all felt very comfortable going as a family. The range of activities had something for everyone.
Our children used the room service and were very impressed with it. Good choice of drinks with your room.
Had regular phone calls from housekeeping to make sure everything was ok with our room and if there was anything else they could do for us

The staff were outstanding, never before been acknowledged by every member of staff with such a lovely smile and greeting.

Visited the Spa on a couple of occasions , not cheap but the treatments include the hydro therapy session, so all in all good value. The treatments were also first class.

A couple of slight negatives. Please watch your belongings around the pool. We had a tablet taken from the lounger whilst there. The hotel were positive it would not be member of staff but another guest.

Due to a storm the beach was riddled with sea weed for most of the holiday. This was a shame as the beach is quite nice and the staff worked hard to try and clean it up. When it did clear it made such a difference.

Night entertainment was also good. Enjoyed the Circus and Michael Jackson show the best.
The bars all did different drinks so tried a range of cocktails that I had not had before

If I went back to Mexico I would stay at the Excellence again .

Room Tip: We stayed in block 1, no sea view but the lazy river was pretty lit up at night

First impression = wow! We arranged a private transfer through the hotel. It was $145 roundtrip but Julio was so pleasant and came to pick us up curbside in a pristine luxury SUV. Pulling up to the hotel, the doorman took our bags an escorted us (by name) to the front desk for check in where we were instantly handed a glass of champagne. The lobby is beautiful, open air and marble floor to ceiling. Very grand! Our room was not ready for check in, but we were given a buzzer and map of the property, which was more like a compound. My husband and I did a tour of the pools and sat down for a poolside, ocean-view lunch and some mango tangos (one of the signature drinks). When we were buzzed for our room, we were pleasantly surprised. The modern elegance has a bit of an Asian flair. We were upgraded to a swim up room, facing the spa due to an anniversary trip. Buildings 1-5 are on the quieter side but farther from the main pool and bars. If you're looking to be close to all the action you will probably need to pay for ocean view. The pools were all very clean, had various floats laying around, loungers in the water, and even hammocks draped over the pool to lounge in when you got too hot. Pass on Toscana for dinner if you're Italian - not great. Flavor Market's tapas are really good! Breakfast buffet was surprisingly good. The only things NOT included at this all inclusive are motorized water sports and bottles of wine at dinner. Go with other couples to make the most of your trip!

Room Tip: Rooms in buildings 1-5 around the spa are quiet but a bit far from most of the action. First floor u...

I had the great pleasure of doing a week at Secrets Maroma Beach then a week at Excellence Playa Mujeres (4th visit here) back-to-back. They are both superb hotels and much has been written about both so this review is a comparison, which I realize is very nit-picky but is just here to highlight the differences between the two hotels so that the reader is able to choose what is most important to them

WIFI- SMB is the clear winner. At EPM the service is slow and spotty whereas SMB has really good coverage/speed. Yes there are a few dead-zones at SMB but overall, it's very good

Rooms- EPM wins here. But the rooms at both hotels are very nice. The SMB toilet affords slightly more privacy, but the room feels just slightly more dated. The balconys at EPM are nicer as well.

Pools- EPM has wonderful pools and many of them. You can find an area to have complete silence or you can hang at the party pool. The lazy river is blissful. At SMB they claim to have many pools but really it's just 2 right next to each other unless you have a swim-out room which no one seemed to use. At SMB you have to worry about finding a spot near the pool, and it can be loud. We ended up next to a wedding party on one day playing loud games and the only other option is to move to the beach because all the pool spots were taken.

Beach- SMB is much better. The sand is lovely, no rocks in the clear water, no fishy smell. EPM has a nice beach (we got married on it) but it's not as wide, as beautiful or as nice as SMB.

Food- Toss up. Some of the specialty restaurants are better at each. We preferred the Mexican at SMB but the Teppanyaki is better at EPM. The desserts are better at EPM but the poolside food is better at SMB. SMB might have a slight edge overall, but really this is very close. Buffets are fairly equal but I might give an edge to EPM here due to desserts, variety of fruit, and my personal preference of guacamole being available at any given time. We loved the tapas and Indian restaurants at EPM.

Entertainment- SMB by a mile. We caught a couple shows featuring the rock band Quarzo and they are amazing. The production values of the shows we saw (the Rock show, the fire show, the cirque type show 'Affair') were much higher at SMB, they really get the crowd into it and people were on their feet dancing. At EPM I have seen the Madonna show, the MJ show, and the Mexican dancing show. While the shows at EPM are not bad, they are very different. SMB has real people singing and dancing, whereas EPM is lip-syncing and the production values are not as high and the audience looks much more bored.

Preferred Club/Excellence Club- EPM is the clear winner. The Preferred Club at SMB is really not worth it at all. You get upgraded toiletries that's about it. It is nice that they give you a small bottle of sunscreen, but you only get one, it is never replaced. We upgraded for the ocean view and we were on the 2nd floor. Our friends, who were not Preferred actually had a nicer view from their 4th floor room. At EPM you get separate pools with very attentive service. There is a better room service menu, better mini bars, the lounge has better snacks and they actually had little events such as a manager's tea party where they really went nuts with beautiful pastries, and the concierge will help you with whatever you need. Our preferred club concierge at SMB took 2 days of being asked before he got us a couple more nespresso capsules.

Now here is where things at SMB go downhill. They really try to push their vacation club on you and it just feels really tacky the way they do it. SMB was actually more expensive than EPM for us but EPM feels much more upscale. When you walk in the door at EPM there is definite 'wow factor.' The lobby/main building is amazing and as we are repeat guests, we were greeted by the guest services manager and taken to the Excellence Club for immediate check-in. Our room request was honored at EPM and ignored at SMB. At SMB it took much longer (more than an hour to check-in) for us to be taken to the Preferred Lounge and then they had wait to speak to someone after about what turned out to be their Unlimited Vacation Club. We were told one thing to get us to attend their meeting, but when we arrived the next day (we only went because it was raining) they told us something different and wanted us to sign something agreeing to 90 minutes (others have said this turned into 3 hours) and asking for our credit cards. We declined and were treated very rudely because we didn't want to participate. We then started reading on the internet about their product which they want you to pay thousands in advance to get a 20% discount for something you can get cheaper on travel websites. In a market as competitive as this, I am surprised they are so greedy as to try to blatantly take advantage of people as they are doing.

Another downside of their high-pressure sales tactics is that the spa is considerably more expensive at SMB because they give spa credits to attend their sales pitches. The prices are lower at EPM because they do not do this.

Spa- EPM is the winner for the reasons mentioned above and because the massage I got there was my preferred one. Also their aqua circuit is guided whereas, you are left to your own devices at SMB.

Some small things-
-Getting change for tips was no issues at SMB. At EPM its nearly impossible to get dollars to tip the staff with. It's a small thing but it makes a big difference.
-SMB has an app which is pretty cool. You can order room service, book the spa, and see what's happening on it
-On rainy days SMB didn't really do anything differently. They even have a rainy day section in the app activities and it was always blank. At EPM during the rain, they were running around setting up games, showing movies, doing Mexican coffee displays, etc... They really kept the place buzzing with activity. The storms really tore up the property blowing away the thatched umbrellas and turning the pools muddy and within 24 hours they had it looking perfectly again. It was incredible the speed in which they worked.
-Mosquitoes were more of an issue at SMB.
-Because we are return guests at EPM, we were remembered by name and on the last night we were there we were given a special table at dinner with flowers (actually this happened twice during our stay) and they brought us a special dessert which read "It's been a pleasure" which we thought was a really nice touch.

Overall, both hotels are wonderful. I am just trying to highlight where each hotel wins so you can decide what is important to you. EPM is probably the overall winner because the whole Vacation Club scheme at SMB leaves a bad taste in my mouth. When you are paying thousands to stay in a hotel, the last thing you want is to feel like they are trying to scam you for more. EPM seems to appreciate their guests a little more which goes a long way.

The hotel grounds are beautiful and the room was very clean, although the bed and pillows were not the most comfortable. The bathroom is quite open to the room, which works fine for couples. The location is a little outside the main Cancun hotel area and while lively, this is not a party hotel. The staff are really wonderful and friendly! The beach is nice, but not as good as Varadero or Punta Cana, in our opinion. There was a lot of seaweed, but this was due to the time of year and the hotel did a fantastic job of cleaning it off the beach every day. The food is quite good and each a la carte restaurant has a vegetarian menu (you just need to ask for it). We didn't opt in for the excellence club, and don't feel like we missed out at all. The non-excellence club pools and bars are more than enough and the non-excellence club beach has plenty of palapas, beach chairs, etc. The evening entertainment was also really good.

My wife and I stayed there from Nov 11-18 for our 30th Wedding Anniversary. By far It's the most relaxing getaway vacation we've ever had. We stayed in a swim-up suite in Bldg. 6 and it was the perfect location for us. From the moment we arrived until the day we checked out we were treated like royalty. Everything, and we mean everything, about this resort was FIRST CLASS. The service at this resort is beyond outstanding! I'm at a loss for words to describe the overall quality of the staff, the facilities, the rooms, the pools, the food, the spa, the entertainment, etc.

We have a few people to mention who truly deserve a 5-star rating for the services they provided during our stay:

1) Mario at the Front Desk graciously accommodated all of our special requests every time. He even moved an incoming guest to another room so that we can have a late check-out. Thank you Mario. You were superb.

2) The bartender at the Revive bar (can't remember his name) provided excellent service throughout our stay. On one occasion, he went out of his way to get my wife some Margaritas, which were not available at the Revive Bar. He didn't have to do that, but he did anyway so thank you for going the extra mile for your guests.

3) The entire staff at Chez Isabelle for making our anniversary dinner so special.

4) Fredi (waiter at The Grill) requires a special mention. My wife wanted rice for dinner, which they didn't have on the menu. Fredi said not to worry because he will take care of it. He returned with a bowl of rice and made my wife very happy. Thank you Fredi.

5) The entire staff at the Spa also deserves a great deal of praise, especially Alondra (?? not sure of the name) who gave us a couples massage and facial for my wife. Very friendly and provided excellent service. Thank you Alondra.

6) Emma (our housemaid in Bldg 6) was so nice. She hardly speaks any English but that didn't stop her from being so friendly to my wife and I during our stay. She kept our room meticulously clean for the entire week. Thank you Emma. You were wonderful!

7) Gloria at the Toscana who greeted us every morning with her warm smile. She loves her job and it really shows. Thank you Gloria.

SUGGESTIONS:

1) The swim-up suites are nice and you can easily jump into the lazy river pool but it's very difficult to get back up because they don't have steps/stairs to go back up, unless you go to the other side which is a long way back to your suite. We recommend putting up a stairs/steps at the pool so that guests can easily come back up to their suites without going around the other side. I've seen guests daily who struggled to climb back up from the pool.

2) We suggest you add self-laundry facilities as an option for the guests. Laundry services are available but the prices are outrageous. A lot of guests stay for a week or longer on the average and it would be nice to be able to do laundry so that we don't have to pack up a lot of clothes.

Overall, I would highly recommend this resort for a relaxing getaway vacation. Thank you Excellence Playa Mujeres for a vacation we'll never forget. Muchas Gracias!

Room Tip: If you want a very quiet area stay in Bldgs. 1 thru 5. You will get a lot more privacy in those are...

Just returned from EPM, our second trip- last year being Excellence Riviera.

There were no suprises, as we anticipated. Excellence has the formulae down pact
and is consistent in providing a memorable stay.
Service, at every level is absolutely top notch, all the staff are to be commended for
their attitude and most friendly approach. Alberto, at the front desk, will ensure
you are happy with your accomodation.

Again, not having to make restaurant reservations is another big plus. Never spent
more than thirty minutes at the Martini Bar waiting for our table.

Clientele- observed a varied mix of people, and it was obvious the Brits are making
this a favourite destination. It's an eleven flight from the UK to Cancun, fives time
longer than going to Europe- so this gives you an idea on the All Inclusive level of
experience which I believe Mexico is setting the highest standard in the world.
We met one couple from the UK that were staying there for the tenth time.
(No, the resort does not upgrade on loyalty, not their policy).

However, even with all the best testimonials on Excellence there is one aspect
that does disappoint: the beach. Not the resorts fault, it's a fight between
Mother Nature. All the resorts facing east on the entire Riviera face a windward prevailing
wind. As a result the seaweed is virtually uncontrolable, and most days it was
two metres wide at waters' edge. I did not see one person in the ocean all week.
So, be warned, if you love to swim in the ocean, as we do, resorts in this area, most
months of the year, have this problem. Quieter spots can be found, pool side, in several
areas. The younger crowd in the main pool, most afternoons, are well into the tequila etc.
But this is a standard all AL resorts have.

Overall, hard to beat for value for money. No suprise Trip Advisor published last
week the Top Ten All Inclusives in the WORLD, and EPM was number five!
And five others of the ten are also in Mexico.
So, there you have it. If you go, please, please tip. It's only a few dollars a day,
and, heaven knows, all these great employess deserve it.

Robert Taylor.
