Riversdale Estate Cottages

We stayed five nights here in a 2 bedroom cottage, well equipped and clean. It had wonderful views across the vineyards and beyond. We had food with us so enjoyed cooking our meals at night and after a day out loved sitting on the verandah sipping a nice Tasmanian wine taking in the view. The cottages are about 15-20 minutes drive from Hobart and in our opinion a great place to stay when visiting Hobart if you do not want to be in the centre of the city. We will definitely stay there again on our next visit.

The Cottages have an awesome view over the vineyards and into the valleys. A great place to chill out and relax if you already have your grocery supplies with you. We stayed twice during our holiday to Tassie and would stay again. The roosters didn't bother us however they did keep our rellies awake in the other cottage. The main bedroom in the lounge area didnt bother us as the cottage was only booked for the two of us. Very modern facilities and we will recommend this place to our friends who want to get off the grid.

We stayed there for a night. Seems no clean up of the house. Lots of bugs on the main bedroom and we dare not to sleep on this. Lucky that there is one more bedroom in my house and we swiched to the 2 bed bedroom. Overall expression is old fashion style and not very clean

After reading reviews from previous guests at Riversdale Estate, I think it appropriate that I try to clear up some misinformation! We stayed three nights, so here, In alphabetical order, is my assessment of the property.

BBQ: There is a BBQ but no area in which to sit. The idea seems to be to cook and take the food back to your individual cottage. Not at all communal, which is a pity.

Bed in living room: Yes, even in the "two-bedroom cottages" the main bed in in the living room! It's a bit odd, so should be considered before booking. It was OK or us, a couple, because we also used the separate bedroom, with single beds (so I could get away from the snorer).

Chooks/roosters: Two friendly roosters and one hen, all very attractive and fun to watch. The roosters did not disturb us with their crows early in the morning.

Condiments and sugar: Not much sugar is provided. There is salt and pepper but no oil for cooking or use on salads. A small amount of coffee, tea and milk, so take your own.

Crockery and glassware: Enough plates, but too few mugs and wine glasses.

Dishwasher: A half dishwasher. Sufficient for those who do not want to cook much.

Door on bathroom: There IS a door. It's a sliding door that disappears into the wall, so privacy is fine!

Laundry: You need three $2 coins to operate the washing machine housed in the laundry shed. You may borrow a set of airing rails to dry clothes.

Location: It's a fair distance to shops, cafes etc, so you definitely need a car.

Setting: Not sure about the budget cottages, but all the 'luxury' cottages are set on a hill above the winery, and have lovely views of the grape vines and water beyond.

Toilet rolls: One toilet roll on the holder, plus several in the hall cupboard. Plenty!!!

Water pressure: A pump makes water pressure variable. My experience taught me to be patient in the shower. Turn on hot water. Add cold to the desired temperature. Get in. When pressure reduces itself, do not adjust the taps. Wait, and pressure will resume. In fact, a veritable deluge of water!!!

We enjoyed our stay. Next time we'll probably opt for a central Hobart hotel, to enable us to walk to attractions. However the peace and fresh air was much appreciated by two people who usually live in an inner-city apartment.

Room Tip: Ours was Cambridge Cottage. It had a fine view.

We chose to stay here as it offered a different experience and we booked a variety of different accommodation options for our trip to ensure we experienced different aspects of Tasmania. It was expensive but we read and researched and noted the 4.5 stars so we were happy to book the property. This was also a birthday celebration stay so we had decided this might be a special location. The other fact that we wanted was a 2 bedroom cottage as there were 3 adults travelling together - not family.
Pros: the location is beautiful with the vineyard setting, and it is quiet and relaxing, close to Hobart.[ with a car]. We didn't mind the roosters but a screen on the front door would be a good idea to allow for a breeze.
Cons: The cottage [Oxford] was dirty when we arrived - it appeared to have been very hastily cleaned as the rug in the living area had cereal or similar crushed on it - my husband had to carefully remove the rug and shake it out as it was impossible to use the area. When we went to have coffee the mugs were not clean and so we then looked closely at the cutlery etc and found we had to put what we required through the dishwasher before using it. There was cooked spaghetti stuck to four place mats and the serving tray as well as on the kitchen floor. The kitchen sponges had been well used and were dirty, no clean sponges available. In the bathroom there were three bottles of conditioner no shampoo or courtesy soap.
For three people for 5 days we had 4 towels and no airing rack or towel rails for drying then each day - just one in the bathroom for the hand towel or 1 large towel. The ironing board and iron were dirty.
The reading lamps near the beds did not allow for reading in bed - the light too poor.
The 2 bedroom cottage as advertised was in fact 1 bedroom with two beds and the main bed was part of the open plan area - no where did we find this indicated where the 2 bedroom was stated on the web site - we would have opted for the Richmond cottage we rejected for this.
The twin room was poorly fitted out for a 4.5 star property - the mirror was lying on the floor and there was nothing but bare walls. The property has a laundry shared by all cottages - a washing machine and dryer plus 2 drying racks. The clothes dryer was not working during our 5 day stay. The cost of using the washing machine is $6 and without a dryer one cottage had both airing racks for 3 of the 5 days to try and dry their clothes given the weather, I understand that at holiday time it is difficult to get service on such items but we were there for 2 days after this and still no service. Would this have been the same for a non functioning oven or stove top? For a 4.5 star property this is not good enough. We did our washing at a local laundrette for $3 including dryer time.

Reflecting on the accommodation we stayed in during the 16 days in Tasmania this was a much poorer experience than properties of 3.5 stars that had 2 bedrooms and were clean and well fitted out with all aspects in working order....and certainly cheaper. The other 4.5 star property for the same cost which we stayed in was simply stunning and very clean with attention to detail and was also in a spectacular location - no comparison.

As there was no reception area [ we were not bothered by this at time of booking] none of these problems could be addressed face to face which we would have preferred to do as I am sure the management did not realise the state the cottage was in when we arrived.

All that aside we did enjoy the location - pity about the cottage, next time we will stay in Richmond as it is close to everything.

My wife and I and our 15 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay here. We weren't there much during the day but looked forward to a glass or two in the evening sitting on the little verandah overlooking the vineyard and the Pitt Water. We loved the remoteness so close to Hobart and will happily stay here again. I can understand some people being unhappy with privacy for the main bedroom but it wasn't an issue for us as our daughter disappeared to her room in the evening to talk to her friends on the internet. We loved the roosters and gave them names. My daughter wasn't impressed with the roosters coming inside but they shoo out easily. It would be nice to have some contact with Riversdale and a wine tasting would be a good way to achieve this. This is a wonderful place to explore Hobart and surrounds from.

Room Tip: We were in "Roberts" cottage which I believe has the best view..

The cottage itself is comfortable and well appointed. We didn't have a problem with water pressure and were pleased to find a dishwasher.

Although there is a reverse cycle air-conditioner / heater, it would have been great to have a fly screen on the door for more natural ventilation. The windows with fly-screens are quite small and do not allow for much natural ventilation.

The roosters are lovely to watch during the day, but at 4am, are an unwelcome wake up call... then again at 7am and then after that, the farm machinery starts up... (if you like your sleep, this is probably not the place for you).

We were disappointed that Riversdale didn't offer any wine tastings on site. There were bottles in our room, but with so many other wineries around offering tastings, we weren't keen to waste $30 on a bottle that we weren't sure of.

I also agree with Toriarose that the location is quite remote and you must have a car to stay here.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay but in hindsight, would probably stay in Richmond next time or just high tail it to Hobart.
