My husband and I were booking a last minute holiday and found a good deal at The Birdie Residence for a 10 night stay. After reading some of the reviews we were not sure what to expect, but I have to say they exceeded our expectations on everything.

No it is not a hotel, it is self catering accommdation, although breakfast is provided if you would like it, and so it is not a surprise that reception is not staffed 24 hours a day, it doesn't need to be. Having got lost on our way there we were running late, however at 6.40pm reception called us to see how we were doing, and arranged for our apartment to be ready for us when we arrived and said that we could come over to reception to officially check in the next morning.

The apartment was lovely, modern, spacious and clean, with an enormous corner bath, big enough for my husband who is 6 foot tall to lie down in. I had asked if it was possible to have a room with a view, and I think we had the best view of all the apartments. The kitchen had everything you need to prepare simple meals and it had a dishwasher. Reception sell kits with basic "household" stuff in case you have forgotten anything. We had brought our own linen, but we could have hired it if we needed to.

The team in reception were friendly and helpful at all times. Reception and the area by reception has free wifi, you just need a passcode which lasts for up to 24 hours usage over 7 days, so you don't need a new passcode everyday you just need to log off each time so its not using up your 24 hours usage.

Cleaning we were given the option of cleaning ourselves or paying for someone to clean for us at the end of the stay. Good idea once I thought about it, it means that for longer stays like ours you get a good per night room rate with just a one off charge for cleaning if you don't want to do it yourself.

We had a wonderful stay, lovely apartment, great location - quiet with views of the Alps, and cheeky cats and hungry sparrows to greet us every morning.

Room Tip: Its worth asking for a good view if its available.

Residence Le Birdie is located in the small village Giez, 19 km from Annecy and 4 km from Averges. The apartments are quite big with balcony and access with elevator. The standard of the bathroom and kitchen are fine, all necessary kitchen equipment are available. You need to rent linen and towels if you do not bring it yourselves. Unfortunately the outdoor pool was under reconstruction during our stay, but it is a nice medium size pool. Note that you are not allowed to use bath shorts in the pools in France - you have to use "Speedos". There is no grocery shooping available in Giez, you have to go to Averges 4 km away. There is free WiFi but there is only signal in the reception area. There are very good possibillities to play golf, run, play tennis and do biking just outside the door of the apartment. The lake is 5 km away where there is a good "beach. There is a good variety of restaurants within driving distance of the residence.

Good location, nice studio apartment (sofa bed, TV, kitchenette, shower/bath). Not a hotel! Reception only open half the week, for half the day. No late arrival possible even though they suggest contacting them to arrange this - I had emailed (three times) to arrange a late (~8pm) arrival and had no response. Arrived at 7.30pm, looked for someone at 'reception' but everything locked up and no-one on site. Mid-December, so freezing, did not stick around. Headed to Favarge and booked into a local hotel for the night. Returned to Birdie the next morning to perplexed staff who could not understand how I had not got their email to say 'let myself in, key is in the room' - they emailed me at 5pm on the day of arrival, not very useful. Wi-fi poor - couldn't pick signal up in my room, had to stand half-way down the hallway. Slight smell of damp in bathroom. Reception closed on Sunday when I left.

The accommodation is ok for what it is, but the lack of professionalism from the staff and inflexible reception times mean I would not consider staying again.

What a great find near Lake Annecy. We only spent a long weekend here in October but I would love to visit again in summer (or even during the ski season). Annecy is 25kms away and it's a truly charming town. Le Birdie is very close to the southern end of Lake Annecy and the place is excellent for cycling and watersports.

Great value accommodation and Karine did an excellent job in making us feel welcome.

What a super find. We stayed there with 2 young children last week. Unusually comfortable beds for a holiday letting. Breathtaking scenery with excellent lakeside beaches a few minutes drive away. 20 minutes by car from fabulous Annecy. Great supermarkets and restaurants in Faverges which is only 5 minutes away. It was the start of the season when we were there and the pool wasn't quite ready. Karine, the English-speaking Manager, was extremely apologetic about this. Great tennis court.
