We were planning to overnight in Dieppe but we were so put off by the shabby port area and the ugly beach front hotels that we didnt get out of the car and just carried on driving out of town. After less than 10 mins, we came across a couple of 'Chambres d'Hote'' signs and took the first one on the left 'La Mare aux Frenes'. The owners, a charming elderly couple, live in the house and have converted the building behind into accomodation that would not look out of place in 'Homes and Garden'. The man is/was clearly a master carpenter and has done all the work himself including making much of the furniture and the wooden staircase . Upstairs is very spacious with a large ensuite bedroom at either end with a huge, comfy double and single bed in each. Inbetween there is a communal area with a big wooden table where breakfast is taken. The couple bring fresh bread and croissants over in the morning but tea and coffee are available all the time. The bedrooms and bathrooms are beautifully furnished, and everything is of a very high standard. It was all so clean and in immaculate condition that we assumed it was new and were surprised to learn that it was 3 years old.Outside there is ample parking and nice gardens to sit. It is a quiet area and from the local information provided it would probably be an ideal base from which to do some cycling and walking in the Normandy countryside and the sea is not far either. The couple are so welcoming and clearly take great pleasure in having guests, the lady speaks some English.
