“Kind people running a classy home stay in a beautiful area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

We stayed two night at this gorgeous spot and could have stayed much longer! It's a bit remote, but it's beautiful and quiet.

First we took a look at the two tree huts, which the owners built by hand and are incredible -- everything is made of wood, and the sides of the hut that face the view of the mountains are basically all glass. So you can wake up in the morning, sit up and bed, and stare at one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen, haha.

We decided to stay in a room in the main building, though, because neither of us were feeling well, and we wanted as many creature comforts as possible. The rooms in the main building are beautiful -- spacious, hand-painted tile floors, high ceilings, an awesome wrap-around porch on the first and second floors, and they're 20 yards from the dining area.

I got pretty sick the first night we were there, and there happened to be a doctor also staying there (the only other guest), so he came in and "diagnosed" me, then the kitchen prepared some tea and toast for me. The next morning, they offered to change the sheets on our bed even though we were staying another night, which was very thoughtful given the rough night we'd had.

Our hosts, the owners, were very friendly and gracious. In addition to offering me some medicine to help with my stomach, the wife (I can't remember her name) was very happy to sit and talk with us when we had tea in the mornings/afternoons, and we ended up talking about all kinds of things -- the Indian school system, the politics in that area of Wayanad surrounding the Islamic call to prayer, language differences -- we even chatted with her daughter a bit. It was really enjoyable!

The second night, I was able to eat dinner, and it was delicious! Breakfast was also way more food than we could ever eat, and equally as delicious. The wife gave us great tips on things to do the area, drawing us a map with directions and distances.

We needed train tickets for our continuing journey, and the husband actually went into town to buy them for us -- talk about service!

I can't recommend this place highly enough. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, as a budget-conscious 20-something, and I would also send my parents here, who are in their 60s and like a few extra comforts. It's just a great spot with good people behind it.

Room Tip: The two tree huts are a short walk from the main building (where the other rooms and dining area are...

The good:
- Lovely surroundings and local climate
- A gracious hostess
- Simple and airy rooms

The not so good:
- Quite expensive for what you get
- Dining: Variable food (from fantastic to disappointing) and buffet service (feels a little strange and impersonal when there are only a few guests).
- The local waterfall is now fenced off due to a recent drowning
- No wireless internet

The bottom line: A memorable experience, but an even better one might be found elsewhere.

Unfortunately, our overall stay at Aranyakam was disappointing. The rooms were actually well-kept and comfortable, and the bathroom had a nice shower. We stayed in one of the rooms on the lower floor, so no view, but altogether it was fine.

What drags this place down was the service. We arrived in Kalpetta after dark ~7pm on the public bus from Calicut. Though we had asked several times, Aranyakam refused to arrange any pickup for us. None of the rickshaw drivers in Kalpetta knew of the homestay, and our driver had a very hard time finding the place. We still don't understand why they were not able to arrange a pickup, as this would have made the arrival much nicer.
The food is ok. Unfortunately it was always served cold, perhaps due to the buffet-style. Also, it was generally lacking in flavour, though this is probably because of previous guests who preferred bland food and not the fault of the homestay.

The coffee plantation itself is nice to walk around, but if you don't have your own car and driver, there is nothing to do. The homestay owners were hard to find during the day, and did not offer any suggestions as to what to do in the area except for a 10k walk to a nearby waterfall. It was very hot out, so we didn't go.

When we asked them to call a rickshaw to take us into the nearest town (Meppadi) they suggested we walk around 2-3k to find one ourselves.

However, the owners did let us use their computer and internet (no wifi) and did call a rickshaw to pick us up on the day we left.

We stayed in the deluxe treehouse for 2 fantastic nights. The view out to the Wayanard jungle was worth every penny, we could even here wild elephants on the first night. Neema and Raj were the perfect hosts and couldn't do enough.Neema's pinapple curry was one of the best we'd had across Kerala and gorgeous fresh coffee from their plantation.

What a lovely homely honestly this is. Newman and Rajesh really add that personal caring touch to your stay. This honestly is situated in the mountains, amongst coffee, cardamon and pepper plants with the lot magnificent views. Food is absolutely lovely. You will enjoy your stay.

Neema made us very welcome at her peaceful and characterful timber homestay amid the coffee plantation. We enjoyed lovely food. we stayed in the main building but examined the well equipped log cabins which had breathtaking views across the valleys. Neema arranged trips with a local guide.

You wonder where you are going as you drive up to this coffee plantation, and it's a lovely secluded spot. We stayed in the main plantation building, across the courtyard from the dining area. The rooms were very large, sparsely furnished, and there was a veranda at the front. It's a very old building full of character. The bathroom has wet room style shower so ask for an old towel to help soak up the excess water and prevent slipping on the tiles. The only downside was that the rooms were very dark at night and only one of the two sockets worked, so very difficult to read and to recharge everything. The food was fantastic - unusual dishes using local produce and delicious, and the hosts were around for chats and local knowledge. Walking up the road outside the homestay takes you by several properties - nice to see local life and the people were friendly and wanting to chat. Beautiful scenery in that area - coffee and tea plantations and the view from Chembra Peak was stunning (although narrow road leading up there is challenging for driver and passengers).
