fantastic wedding venue

Review of Upper Court
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Sept 2012
This truly is a perfect venue for a truly quintesssentially English wedding. The hosts are delightful in every way, so willing to give helpful guidance when planning the occasion on request. The congregation at St Nicholas church alongside the property are very welcoming and helpful when arranging a wedding service to take place there. The grounds of Upper Court are beautiful and with fine weather, we were able to enjoy drinks and canapes on the lawns before being seated in a fabulous marquee open on the side overlooking the flood lit lake. We just so enjoyed staying on site for the whole week end in the homely charming cottages. On Sunday there was swimming, croquet, tennis, children.s play area, something for everyone. We couldn' have wished for a more perfect place for our daughter's wedding.

We were recently guests at a wedding there. The whole day was tarnished by the 2 dogs roaming around which I believe were the owners. There were a general nusiance and pooed all over the grounds. Members of the wedding party trod in it while they were running around the grounds getting ready. My sister got it on her pram wheels and anyone with children were constantly on alert. At one point one of the dogs ran into the kitchen where they were preparing the wedding breakfast and I had to chase it out while it snapped at me. Such a shame as the venue is lovely. It really makes what could have been a lovely day very stressful.

Mortified to hear that we missed seeing a dog poo and cannot apologise enough. Bertie is a year old and still not potty trained properly outside, we do do our best! Very hard for him to understand our rule of not going into the kitchen of cottages as some people really do encourage him and feed him, however much we ask them not to (for obvious reasons). Thank you for your kind words about Upper Court and only hope it did not spoil the wedding weekend. We shall always endeavour to keep him shut in on wedding weekends in future so thank you for your helpful comments.

We booked very last minute for a few days of peace and quiet. The website showed a very promising property and just what we were looking for. The advantage of staying in Dovecote was the ability to have our West Highland Terrier with us. The property was clean and ready for use. There were all the necessary appliances in the kitchen. (Dishwasher, washing machine, microwave etc.) all of reasonable spec. Only criticism was the table cloth was stained, although I think that it had been washed. All new pots and pans were available. Caution the water was very HOT take care.

The first floor housed the bedroom with a very comfortable four poster bed; there is also a settee and TV up here as well as the one downstairs in the kitchen/diner/sitting room. We did have issues with the TV as on some days we were not able to access any BBC channels. There is good Wi-Fi in the house, big plus point.

The top floor bathroom is clean and modern although we do not like showers that only direct the water onto the head!

It was a shame that the outdoor furniture was such poor quality; I felt that the chair was ready to collapse at any moment. Some half decent table and chairs would not go a miss.
The biggest criticism was the fact that our peace was destroyed at 7:45 on the Thursday morning by the erection of a huge marquee on the main lawn outside the cottage. I fully understand that the venue also caters for weddings but we were not pre-warned of this. Consequently not only was there constant noise form the men erecting the marquee but our lovely views over the outstanding gardens was now obstructed by a huge white monstrosity.
All in all apart from the “Tent” a very good experience. We only paid half price because of the late booking which I thought was a fair rate, I would not pay the going price for this property.

Thank you so much for your helpful comments and your kind words too. We shall always endeavour to tell people if they marquee is going up on a Thursday so they have the choice of coming or not. New garden furniture has been put outside straight away and aerial fixed! So sorry these caused inconvenience.

We enjoyed a fantastic week at Upper Court. The cottages are great and the grounds stunning.
There is something for all ages here from the playroom with table tennis table, to the swings and trampoline, to the tiny ducklings on the lake, to rowing on the lake, to strolling into the village to pick up a paper or have a pint, to admiring the gardens here and throughout the village, to walking up Bredon Hill, to riding on the steam railway from Cheltenham. And there's plenty more to do besides but that's all we really had time for. We used Benson of Broadway for a catered lunch for Mum's birthday and they were very good and reasonably priced. I would come back here without any hesitation.

We stayed for a week in May and had a fantastic wedding over the weekend. The venue and setting were perfect. The hosts couldn't be more helpful. They made us feel very much at home and what a perfect home. The self catering accomodation is all excellent and the lawn in front of the lake couldn't be more perfect for a reception after a wedding in the beautiful old Church next door. We cannot thank Upper Court enough. We cannot think of anything that could be improved and you certainly couldn't hope to find a better venue to meet up with extended family.

Room tip: All the rooms are excellent but the rooms in the main house ar very special

We stayed in The Dovecote for 5 days to enjoy some relaxing days in the countryside with our baby. It was all we could hope for, and amazing setting just in our doorstep, lots of opportunities for walks and bicycle rides in the countryside. The garden in Upper Court is a dream as are the houses. Also, for parents tied with small babies, there is a tennis court, boats to row in the lake, table tennis, a swimming pool and art lessons, so no need to take the car to enjoy.
We will definitely come back!
