“Stunning example of incorporating old and new”

St Patrick's Cathedral
Reviewed 29 April 2014

Finally a look at the completed Cathedral after fine renovations. The modern interior seems to be incorporated within the walls of the old cathedral - and it works beautifully. The extensive use windows both at the top and bottom of walls adds such lightness and together with the use of light timber and light metal fixtures adds a freshness to the whole area. The idea of having the alter in the middle of the room must give the parishioners a feeling of being a fully integral part of of the services. The font area has a small pool of water at its base. The tall stained glass windows, truly modern with a mosaic affect of glass on glass. So different from the times when my great, great grandparents wed there in 1846. Well worth a visit if you are in the area or combined with a visit to the Old Government House, nearby.

I don't live very far away from this cathedral, so I have no excuse not to go.. I used to go to Christmas Mass with my fiancè every year at St Pat's Cathedral, sadly he passed away in July 2012 and ever since then I go occasionally and light a candle for him and sit and ponder..

I love both the old and new sections of the cathedral.. the statue of Saint Mary McKillop.. the nativity scene at Christmas.. and it's actually quite interesting sitting in the configuration they have in the new section. I remember one year at the Christmas Mass, a couple of Islamic ladies were in attendance at the invitation of the Parish. It was beautiful.

Well worth a look.. I think we Parramattans take it for granted, but it's amazing.

The same architect firm who designed the new parliament house in Canberra designed the modern cathedral after a rebuild due to fire.
It is beautiful with or without the spiritual connections of the church.
Part of the old church has been retained as a chapel in an annex off the main church. Truly beautiful and well worth a visit.

This is one of the oldest Churches in Australia and has a lovely Gothic appearance from the outside with the most spectacular modern restoration completed in 2003 after a devastating fire gutted the building in 1996. The Cathedral received a prestigious Architecture Award for the re-build in 2003 & when you visit you will understand why! There is also a pipe organ from the 19th-century that was originally installed in St Saviour's Anglican Church in Knightsbridge, London and installed at St Patrick's in 2006. Not only a place of worship but a place of beautiful craftsmanship, art and history.

This church is anything but conventional setting. The main room is set-up in a weird way where everyone sits on the side facing each other and the mass happens in the middle of it all. The tabernacle is kept in a separate chapel which is very uncommon and troubling when you know it holds the body of Christ and that Jesus should be the center of mass, not the priest... The modern look is interesting but the chapel part is definitely more charming and traditional. Considering this one of the oldest church in the Sydney area, it is a bit upsetting to see how far from the roots when they renovated it after a major fire.
