We wanted a reasonably priced hotel close to the excellent skiing area of Les Grand Montets in Argentiere with a family room that would comfortably accommodate a family of 4. La Couronne is a traditional hotel with a lovely old-fashioned feel to it. Our family room (No. 1) was a decent size - 2 single beds pushed together with a quite large annexe containing bunks for the children. The bathroom is a little awkward in its layout (a bidet placed next to the bath means you have to climb in over the end of the bath - we could happily have done without the bidet!), but nothing that inconvenienced us too greatly. There was always plenty of hot water, the beds were reasonably comfortable, although the mattresses could benefit from being updated (the bunks were more comfortable). It was nice to be able to open the window to allow in some fresh air, although this did mean there was traffic noise early in the morning. There is a small balcony beyond the annexe with room for 2 chairs - we had poor weather, so didn't really make use of this, but it really is just for sitting out rather than eating. There was a fridge (extremely useful) and a table so it would be possible to buy food and eat in the room, should you choose not to go out all the time to eat. We had breakfast each morning for 9 euros each and we thought this was reasonable value. It is an eat as much as you like breakfast buffet with ham, cheese, cereals, eggs, breads, fresh fruit, excellent pastries and cakes. There seemd to be adequate seating and on one morning when there were no tables left, one of the staff instantly made up a table for us in the salon next door to the dining room. The salon is a nice place to sit in the evenings, to have a drink (bring your own - there's no bar at La Couronne), read, or play one of the many board or card games that are on offer. The staff were very helpful and friendly and all spoke excellent English. If you are skiing, there is a bit of a walk (about 15mins) to the Grands Montets lift. Not so bad on the way down, but a bit strenuous coming back up the hill! There are buses up the hill to the left of the hotel (a 3 minute walk) going to Chamonix itself or La Tour in the other direction, but buses to Grands Montets were less frequent in April (I think they run more often up until the end of March) and they are free with your lift pass or with a Carte d'Hote which the hotel will give you. It is possible to ski back to close to the church square opposite the hotel by taking a route off the final red run back to Les Grands Montets, then taking a track to the right through trees (signed for La Cremerie). It's a Langlauf trail and when we were there, did not have much snow left on it - but earlier in the season it may even be possible to avoid walking at all. Argentiere is basically one long road, so the hotel is within easy reach of a range of restaurants catering for different tastes and they're not too expenisve by ski resort standards. There are also several shops including a supermarket, tobacconist and pharmacy very close by.
We were very happy overall with our stay - the hotel suited our needs and budget. It is not luxurious, but it has a pleasant atmosphere and all the basics that we needed.

It's got a great central location in Argentiere, friendly staff, good prices and deservedly attracts lots of skiers who want to enjoy the area's top-class skiing. We stayed before and after heading into the mountains for some ski touring; they looked after our bags while we were away, and cheerfully rejigged things when our plans changed. Nice mellow atmosphere, looks and feels like the old Alpine hotel that it is.

The hotel is well situated in the centre of Argentiere and thus well positioned for swift access to the ski slopes of the Grand Montets. We stayed for four nights at a reasonable price and were comfortable in a quiet, clean room. The hotel has few facilities other those catering for one's primary needs but Argentiere is well served with shops, restaurants and bars. Breakfast is a buffet style and is priced separately but offers a good start to the day. Sylvia, on Reception, is delightful and always willing to help.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back avoid any late night traffic noise.

This is our second stay at this hotel and it was just as good as the first time.

Great location in town, really great staff [Sylvia especially!], spotless rooms, plenty of hot water and a great breakfast!

We will return to this hotel time and time again as we love Argentiere as a skiers paradise.

Thank you Hotel de La Couronne!

We checked out of a very poor standard Gite down the road (The Belvedere - Avoid at all costs) and found this accommodation on a recommendation from some locals.

We could not have been more pleased. The staff are friendly, the rooms some of the best I've stayed in while skiing and the hotel overall very clean.

It is also ideally located close to Grands Montet resort, the bus for the rest of Chamonix and a couple of decent watering holes including the Office directly opposite.

If and when I return to Chamonix I will certainly stay here.
