This place is ideal for people who are looking for a peaceful break in the lap of nature without foregoing any civic amenities. This combination is indeed very rare in Sikkim which has the option of hotels which are luxurious but situated in crowded touristy areas and small homestays which are set in breathtaking scenery but lack even a clean toilet.
The Barfung Retreat is a rare combination of both these and it makes it an unbeatable choice for people like me who value both. A property which is a little more than a year old, it has 3 cottages with 2 separate rooms with balconies each and lovely wooden decor. All rooms
have a lovely views, wooden floors and walls and come with en suite bathroom which is huge, well tiled and spotlessly clean. There is running hot water and LED TVs in all rooms (with Dish TV) along with a latest in room electric heater akin to those used in high end hotels.
There is a bonfire area where they happily arrange a bonfire every night and it was a great experience to enjoy the same in the chill and silence of the night.
The surroundings of the property are isolated and even a walk around it is lovely. The dining area is huge and clean where home made food is served everyday but be sure to request the meals. I had a great time cuddling the puppies on the property who the owners allow to stay
and feed daily.
The owner likes to call the place a homestay and in that standard,at least in India, it is a luxury one. It contains all the amenities of city life in an absolutely unbeatable location far away from the touristy main area of Ravangla. But make sure you have a car to yourself as a walk to the main area is not possible as its too far away. The owner recommends some sightseeing like Buddha Park, monasteries and a trek to the Borong Hot Springs all of which will require a car and are about 1-2 hours drive away.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Sikkim- you simply cannot go wrong with this one.

Pros
Location- serene and away from touristy filled area, Hot Water, Heater, lovely Wooden floors, huge and clean bathroom, great bed linens and comfy bed, in room tea/coffee (unheard of in Sikkim even in good hotels), warm and welcoming staff, home cooked food, the overall property set in the forest,

Cons
Meals need to be requested in advance and take some time.
They aren't good with snacks, the ones we requested were cold and lacked any taste at all. The meals were akin to home made food and not bad so no complains with that.
The rooms are a steep walk of stairs down so this place is hard for those mobility constrained/aged folks.

Room Tip: all rooms have the same great view

Barfung Retreat is the classy escape you are dreaming of while traveling in India. Sonam has created a beautiful boutique resort with old-time charm and modern elegance, he graciously tends to your every need - including local beer served in the hot stone bath (for two) under the stars. Yes the sheets and comforters are quality cotton and the huge bathroom was impeccably clean and has lovely stone tiles plus an abundance of hot water. The views are wonderful and the food and service is way above average. (Just hope Sonam is there and is making a batch of his special cumin chicken soup - to die for!) OK, I am a food snob and hotel critic and this place gets five stars - yummy, yummy plus charming and luxurious; all for a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Small boutique hotel with just a few (all choice) bungalows! You can't go wrong.

Despite great reviews at Tripadvisor, I was not sure about the place until we reached the retreat on a chiily evening. The staff was cordial and immediately offered us tea to warm up.
The retreat is situated close to a ridge much away from the Rabongla town with picturesque surroundings. The residential cottages were well done with clean interiors. My family enjoyed the arrangements and everything was taken care off by friendly staff.

Food deserves a sepcial mention as it was refreshingly simple and much better than the overcooked Indian variety. One should not miss out on the Buddha Park. I have travelled a lot but this palce was simply a gem.

This is my first review for any hotel and I am glad that I could pen down my thoughts for Barfung Retreat here.
Well-designed, enticing, urban , elegant and probably many more adjectives I can use for this adobe. I have never felt away from home during my stay there . They are extremely cordial people and will treat you like family . The property has 3 cottages with all urban facilities and beautiful view of Himalayan range . You can just open your window curtains and enjoy the virgin nature. Barfung Retreat is strategically located down the Ravang bazar and keeps you away from the hue and cry of the market area. It is very near to the Doling Gompa and one can just trek to reach. The food is very good and most importantly is served with a lot of love . They do not have a set menu, but they will try their best to serve food as per your likings. Mr. Sonam owns the place. He is an amazing guy to talk to and spend time with. He envisioned to turn Barfung to a home stay and not a commercial hotel and he has been successful doing that. It has been an worth remembering trip and a good share of credit goes to Mr. Sonam & Barfung ! They have been the most courteous and accommodating team of people who would do their best to serve your worth.

Cheers Sonam.. Hope to see you soon :)

Room Tip: They have 6 rooms and one with Queen bed . Others have 2 single bed.

I had chosen The Barfung Retreat on the basis of strong recommendation from my friend in Gangtok. The resort is nestling in a valley. The verandah offers a spectacular view of the Narsing Peaks and one can enjoy the breakfast out in the verandah. Well appointed rooms in the cottages provide a very cosy atmosphere. The sound of the thunderstorm over the cottage roof was a concert held out in my honour by mother nature herself! And except for that the silence of the mountains reign the resort. As for the level of service, nothing is left wanting by the local family which is looking after the resort with -literally- a quiet efficiency. Fresh vegetables from the garden reaches you in the form of delicious local cuisine. Mr. Sonam Barfunga, the owner of the property is obsequious with his attention to the comfort of the guests. Steeped in local tradition with a modern outlook Mr. Barfunga cannot but leave his stamp of hospitality on the guests. Meticulous attention marks the service delivered with a ready and quiet smile by the staff. An exotic location, homely atmosphere with attention to comfort and value for money make Barfung Resort an unspoiled spot in Sikkim to spend time and bust stress for a hectic existence. I am looking forward to returning there -- this time for longer stay! Venkat Narasimhan, Company Executive from New Delhi, India

There are few places in the world that will bring you so close to nature while offering you the comforts of home. This beautiful retreat in Barfung is one of them. Three cottages honouring the traditional building styles of Sikkim provide modern and refreshingly clean bathroom facilities and large, comfortable rooms. Through the large plate glass windows one is brought in direct contact with lush forest, the comforting sounds of barn animals, and the stunning views of the Himalayas. The Community living, dining and kitchen facilities provide an even greater breadth of view from the comfort of a wide, raised verandah. The local food experience was wonderful - tasty dishes of seasonal fare - nettle soup, fern tendril curry, stir-fried orchid flower, and local cottage cheese. Finally, and not least of all, the very gracious welcome of the hosts Mr. and Mrs. Sonam Palden brings one the warmth of heart that is a precous commodity in today's world of speed and profit. If you want to experience a taste of the "real" Sikkim, I thoroughly recommend this experience to you.
