La Parare
Reviewed 21 July 2014

Just a few weeks ago we had the chance to revisit Karin and Sydney, and La Parare. We must be two of the luckiest people in the world to be able to enjoy it a second time in two years! We found everything to be just as good, if not better than the first time we stayed here in June of 2012. Karin and Sydney are even more welcoming, if that is possible. They prepared and served a delicious dinner upon our arrival, then topped that by bringing in a local chef, Frederic, from Parcours to give us a cooking class, which was fun and inspirational. And, of course, breakfast was as delightful as ever, with fantastic breads and pastries, some of which Karin bakes; home-made preserves; yogurt; homemade granola; salami and havarti with dill--one of my favorite cheeses; boiled eggs; and the ever-delicious daily offering of Karin's pancakes and this time, lovely delicate waffles! Juice, coffee, and tea are offered first, before any other courses and the fresh-squeezed o.j. was delicious--and I'm not much of a juice drinker. It was simply lovely to linger over breakfast, enjoying the view of the surrounding hills and the bells of the church in Chateauneuf-Villeveille.

The accommodations remain first-rate. Each room is unique, but equally well-appointed. We stayed in the Tower Room, once again, which I love for its spaciousness and views out the bathroom window as the sun rises behind the church in Chateauneuf-Villeveille. It is breathtaking very early in the morning, just as the sun comes up, and the church tower remains illuminated. I also enjoyed some of Karin and Sydney's excellent wine cellar, available to guests for a charge, naturally. It was very nice not to have to stop at the market just to get a glass or two for lunch or in the evening.

Once again, Sydney gave us some excellent recommendations for restaurants in the region. Our favorite was the restaurant at the Auberge de la Madone in the village of Peillon, up a winding road about twenty minutes away. We went there on a night when France was playing in the World Cup and meant to eat at a restaurant in Conte, the larger town down the hill from Chateauneuf-Villeveille. But everything was closed because of the match. So we took Sydney's recommendation to drive to the charming village of Peillon and it was a magical experience! A table on their gracious patio; a congenial wait staff, particularly the maitre'd, Herve, who recommended a terrific bottle of wine; a meal that featured roast leg of lamb and ended with a cherry clafouti . . . thank you once again, Sydney! it was one of the best evenings we had on our month-long vacation. Sydney can also direct you to noteworthy villages throughout the region, whether you wish to visit those that cater to tourists or those less-frequented by travelers. Karin also makes excellent suggestions along those lines. For instance, upon leaving for Italy she suggested an alternate route that took us along the coast, rather than immediately on the autoroute. The views of Monaco and the Mediterranean were spectacular!

We will return to La Parare as soon as possible. Karin and Sydney have become more than our favorite hosts, but friends. Yet, we are not special, in that regard. Everyone who stays at La Parare becomes friends with these two wonderful people whose pleasure it is to share their corner of the south of France with others.

We found this B&B through a friend and just everything she told us about it is true. Syndey and Karin are absolutely lovely hosts. About twice a week they organize a BBQ in the lovely garden where all the guests (from all four rooms) are invited. They are not the kind of host that just lets everybody stare to each other in awkwardness, but they accomodate perfectly. We found this such a great experience that we repeated it.
The breakfast is excellent, and when you think you have finished there is a small dessert that arrives.
In the area there are a lot of things to see and when asked Karin and Sydney give you a couple of things to choose from, not too many so you get overwhelmed, and give you nice things to see there and how to get there.

This place is truly a spot where you can relax and find peace. We loved it, and would love to come back someday!

Karin and Sydney are extremely gracious hosts. Great cooks too! Breakfast was always delicious and plentiful. After we had eaten our breakfast and considered ourselves full and ready to take on the day, they brought out Swedish waffles or Dutch pancakes, which were wonderful. The facility is spacious and lovely. The negatives were the pool wasn't opened and although the bathroom was huge and very nice, the beautiful tub would not drain. Karin offered to help, but I'm not comfortable with someone coming in either right before or after I bathe. Karin said she had to call a plumber, but that didn't happen during the days we stayed. These were disappointments for us.

The area is very quiet, but we probably won't go back because of the little disappointments.

Room Tip: Be prepared for lots of hairpin turns going up or down the road to the place.

Dear “Lakemissy”,
Thanks for taking the time to write a posting. I regret that you were not fully satisfied with your stay but for the benefit of the readers of your review I would like to add a couple of comments.
As you state that La Parare is remote, I would like to point out that you especially asked to get the instructions to visit St Paul de Vence on the way, which is by no means the shortest way to get here, and I seem to recall I told you so.
We are only 30 minutes from Nice and the airport, so have luxury of living in a quiet location with beautiful nature and still easy access to the coast and the buzz of the Riviera.

You also say the pool was closed, but it is never closed? I remember clearly that the weather was exceptionally bad in the whole of Europe when you were here – we even had breakfast inside. Obviously that makes it less attractive to use the pool, but unfortunately nothing we can do much about. Maybe you meant that it was not heated, and it’s true that we do not heat it when the weather is such that no one is likely to use it. Does not go with our commitments towards the environment – our house is classified Green Key.

As for the bathtub unfortuantely this has caused us problems and I explained that in some detail to you. Plumbing in an old house is not always straight forward. Rest assured that I had no intention to enter your bathroom as long as you were still in the room, but you must understand that to get a plumber to come during the weekend because a bathtub is slow to empty – I don’t think that is possible. The problem has now been addressed and all it fine again.

I can’t help regretting that you did not follow more the advices and proposals we gave you as we, as well as B&B owners in general become ambassadors for our region and put a lot of efforts in to making your stay a memorable time.

At the risk of just repeating everything that everyone else has said, this place is perfect. We were there for four nights and stayed in the Chapel Room and the Tower Room, which were spacious, gorgeous and comfortable. The beds were amazing and the amenities perfect. We must have driven Karin and Sydney crazy because we stayed at our breakfast table on the terrace for about 2 hours each morning. The food was so delicious, the view so stunning, and our hosts so interesting and cheerful, that we found it hard to leave! We were lucky enough to arrive on a Saturday when a dinner was offered. If you have the opportunity, don't miss it. It was one of the best dinners we had in France (and that's saying a lot.) There's so much to do in the area. You can go into Nice, which is a fun little city, or you can stay around locally and hike up above La Parare and see the ruins of the local castle. There's something for everyone. We also experienced two great dinners, at a seaside restaurant in Cap d'Ail and a wine bar in Nice, that Sydney and Karen reserved for us. We were treated very nicely when we said we were from La Parare. If we can ever go back again, I think we'll stay for a week and revel in being totally pampered.

Room Tip: The Tower room has stunning views. The Chapel room is spacious, with a separate bedroom. We didn...

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 4 nights at the end of August, and had the most magical time. The position and surrounding area is beautiful. The decor and attention to detail was perfect. Our bathroom window looked out over the hills, it was just amazingly romantic! Bath huge! plenty of room for two. Sydney and Karen are the most perfect hosts, and were just so helpful, friendly and informative. They really care about what they do, and it shows. Breakfasts were very good, and the evening meal was spectacular and reasonable.

We loved the plunge pool with jet stream to swim against, and the beautiful quirky figurines made by Karen. There's only 4 apartments - so you're never crowded which is a must for us.

It's easy to reach from Nice airport, and though the hairpin bends are not for the faint hearted, you do get used to them (keep tight in to the side!). We went to the Maeght foundation, and discovered some of,the stunning towns perched in the hills. We also went horse riding in the Mercantour ! Quite an experience ! Suggest you've ridden a bit first.

This was one of our favourite places, and I look forward to returning.
