“Restful and relaxing”
Reviewed 10 November 2008

Karin and Sydney who own and run La Parare have refined hospitality to a fine art. We enjoyed a warm welcome followed by a quick tour of the property and then to settle into our room - no, not a room, but a suite offering a charming sitting room with large fireplace (apparently the original for the property), a surprisingly spacious contemporary bathroom and a cozy bedroom with an oh so comfortable bed.
After a hectic tour of Italy, it was a welcome pleasure to lap up the rest and relaxation that is part and parcel of La Parare. Our suite overlooked a terrace which in turn provides stunning views of the valley below. Certainly there are more than a few u-turns on the short trip from Nice (you quickly get used to them) but the charm of La Parare's location is also the mantra of real estate agents - location, location, location. It's an easy trip into Nice (if indeed you want to go there) and also just as easy to plan delightful drives along back roads to charming villages such as Peillon in one direction or St Paul de Vence in the other. Indulgent breakfasts started the day on the terrace - even in October! Nothing was too much trouble for Karin and Sydney - they make hospitality look far more simple than it is.

I was lucky to discover this incredibly charming place and meet the hosts Sydney and Karin this summer. I was looking for a place in the South of France to relax and spend a few days of vacation. I found it and I will go back! Friends from New York had recommended it and in turn I wish to speak highly of it.
It is nested on the mountains just off the airport so it literally takes less than 30 minutes to get there. The old "bergerie" architecture has been kept mostly intact which gives it lots of character. I was staying in the Chapel room which mixes tastefully Asian and local colors (the hosts used to live in Asia). Bathrooms are roomy and part of the main room which is very nice. What I loved is that you can do everything and nothing: quietly read a book under the shade, hike up the mountain to discover trails and old ruins, drive to surrounding villages, go to the beach for the day ... Breakfasts are amazing and I missed them as soon as I left! I think Sydney and Karin are also part of the experience, ready to do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable, it was nice to share "aperitif". Oh talking about drink, they make a very tasteful "vin d'orange" ... ask for it!

Sydney and Karin are wonderfull friendly hosts. They make a perfect table d'hote as well. Unfortunately this chambre d'hote with respect to comfort does not promise what we expected after looking at the nice pictures on the website. We stayed in room 4. This really lacks some comfort. It has 4 levels (be carefull not to slip!), low ceiling, very narrow toilet as if they at first were forgotten to put one in, no airco, and mosquitoe heaven hence the anti mosquitoe spray in our room. There is also no pool but only a very small bathtub which no one uses. We think La Parare would be more popular if they would invest in a pool as this would be the perfect intermezzo between day trips and diner.
So be aware that at La Parare there is really nothing much to do. Their credo is to get away from every day information overload so no TV's are present in the rooms. No keeping up with world news. The location is very remote. It takes at least 35 minutes to get to the center of Nice.
There you have it, very friendly people and a perfect place for visitors who are ok with very average comfort and who are looking for a complete getting away from it all.

We are very happy to hear that our efforts in welcoming our guests and caring for their comforts are appreciated. Our house is not a standard modern villa, but a very old stone house making it difficult to follow the same norms regarding installations and equipment as for a new built house. The room mentioned in this review: Room 4, is actually our smallest room but also the most romantic and in total the most demanded. The different levels have been chosen for the charm and admittedly demand a certain awareness, but also allows you to have a bath in front of the open fire which seem very appreciated by a lot of guests. To install A/C’s in the rooms is not feasible because of the difficulty of the task and as we are at 500m altitude, not really necessary.
As most house owners will know, to build a swimming pool requires not only a major investment but also building permits which due to the nature of the house and the land around us are difficult to obtain. We are really happy to announce that last year we had a beautiful pool built on the terrace equipped with jet stream to allow for a proper swim. It's all in stone and have some really nice features - to be seen!
We do continue to promote the calm here, and do encourage our guests that for once cut off from the world and all every-day worries and most seem to appreciate the fact that there is no TV in the rooms. However, for anyone that do feel the need there is a TV available in the house and we also offer free WiFi. The village is very calm, but it actually only takes 25 min to Nice center (or 23 according to Mappy) and we now also have to possibility to park just outside Nice and take the tram avoiding any parking problems.
I suspect that General99 who wrote the review might have been happier in a modern hotel and we are sorry that La Parare did not turn out to be what he had expected. Since his visit we have re-done our website and hope that with help of all new photos ensure that the assets of La Parare get correctly communicated.

What a wonderful and incredible place! The La Parare is close to all the action of the Cote d'Azur and still, its worlds apart. Karin & Sydney have done a great job and put in a lot of work to make this place a piece of paradise on earth.
We had the pleasure to stay in the Terrace Room for 2 nights plus another 4 nights at the Chapel Room. Despite they both have their own character, we would have a hard time to decide, which one is nicer. We felt totally home away from home and loved the moments on the terrace with a glas of wine. Also the breakfast under the Olive tree belonged to the daily highlights. All in all, we've had a wonderful and relaxing time at the La Parare and we want to go back right away! I just did not understand, why I've had to hang 1 dollar bills into the fig trees for each fig I took :-)
Just kidding... Karin and Sydney are great hosts. We loved the stories and the jokes. Not to forget, their home cooked dinner... what a treat. Next time we go to Nice, there is no other place we want to stay!

This is a beatiful small and quite hotel. It is 20 minutes from Nice in a very quite place. The house is very old and beautiful, rooms are great!!! Very spacious and really very clean. Breakfast is served in a beautiful garden...
The owners are very warm and helpfull, and they do everything there.
It was the best place we have stayed in, during our trip to Europe. Ideal for couples (very romantic!!) HIghly recommended

We spent 3 nights here in late September and found it to be a nice hide away --- maybe a little more of a hide-away than we had hoped for. It was a little difficult to find via our rental car from the Nice airport but with a little backtraking here and there we made our way up 23 hairpin turns to an idyllic setting high in the hills. Sydney was a wonderful host and provided one of the best breakfasts on our trip. After getting used to the roads and how to navigate we were able to get to Monaco and most other sights with little difficulty. One downside with the location was poor access to restaurants as most were a good 25-30 minutes away. We settled for some closer ones but found the food generally unappealing. The room was nice although the nouveau architecture which included multiple levels and no railing required great skill to prevent tripping or slipping. All in all it's a niice place to chill out for a few days and use as a base to visit the hill communities.

Sydney and Karen are the consummate hosts. The setting is very tranquil and close to most attractions on the cote D'Azur. The rooms were excellent and the beds very comfortable. We liked the very large bathrooms and exotic decorations. It really is between Zen and Provence.
