“Heaven in Tuscany.”
Reviewed 7 June 2011

This was our 4th visit as a family to Poggio al Casone. I have traveled the world with my job from 1 to 5 stars so you get an idea of whats quality and what you should avoid. I have also traveled extensively with my family and never went back to the same place twice, until 3 years ago. This resort s 5 star self catering, set in the middle of an idyllic vineyard. The owner is a committed organic wine grower and they do a tour of their vineyards every week. The pool is a beautiful area to relax and is 18 metres long which is great if you want to do lengths. This resort has been made with real care and incredible attention to detail. Its looks great on their website, but trust me it's even better in real life. As Tina Turner sang, "Its simply the best".

This is my second stay at Poggio al Casone and I know it will not be my last! My first visit was with friends and this trip I brought my college grad neices and they absolutely loved it! You will feel at home in a beautiful and peaceful Tuscan setting. You may plan day trips to Pisa and Florence, use a good travel book for logistics (driving, parking etc) we use Rick Steves. Cinque Terre, Seina, Montipulciano could be long day trips but are certainally doable, just take the scenic route one way, then relax the next day at Poggio. The accomodations are clean, relaxing, all up to date and Michala and staff are so helpful and accomodating.

We spent 3 nights at Poggio al Casone which was most certainly far too short. The resort is set in a secure development with breathtaking views overlooking the rolling vineyards.

The resort consisted of a charming patio with relaxing seats and small table and chairs overlooking the views, relaxation room - equipped with a sauna and nice loungers to sit back and listen to tranquil music - this really is a nice touch. Unfortunately the pool was not open in April, but we had plenty to do without the pool!

The resort it self consists of a small number of apartments all with different capacity and decorated individually with really nice touches and features. There were 6 of us so we decided to rent out the Villa (Le Vinge) which was perfect for us, the kitchen well equipped, fabulous welcome basket with complementary wine and juices, a range of wines from the vineyard that could be purchased - perfect for your own wine tasting!

Poggio al Casone is located close to Pisa airport and generally in a great location to tourist sites (about 25mis to Pisa, about an hour away from Florence). Within the town there's a couple of restaurants, a really nice Rotisserie - great for taking back a range of items back to the villa, a bakery, a patisserie and a small supermarket. About 5-10 minutes away is another town with a larger supermarket and en route are some more restaurants.

The greatest benefit of not staying at a chain hotel or commercial property with lots of accommodation is the personal service that we received from the staff - Michaela was brilliant, she's very quick to respond to any queries whilst making the booking, very informative and happy to make suggestions. Upon arrival she made us feel very welcome. During the stay Michaela provided great advice on places to eat and visit! She really made this visit special and helped us plan our stay to get the most out of our visit.

This resort was absolutely perfect for us, and we look forward to visiting again!

We stayed in Poggio al casone for 5 days at the end of July 2010 with our 5 year old son. It is true that the entrance to the estate is quite impressive, through the vineyards and a beautiful pine tree road. Our appartment was very cosy and nicely decorated, right in front of the swimming pool. There was a friendly package waiting for us upon our arrival with s bottle of their olive oil, a bottle of red wine, some italian biscuits and all the ingredients to make pasta. The kitchen was fully equippped with everything and the lady who received us a gave us a full package with info for the surrounding area. Swimming pool and the estate are great! One note though (since I read the previous review) this place is definately NOT for couples without children looking to have a romantic getaway...the place was full of children (which was great for us!!!); the swimming pool is full of them, there are bikes you can rent to have a stroll around the estate, a small lake you can go fising (our son was fascinated!!!) and a very nicely controlled environment for children to play freely.
The rooms are not cleaned on a daily basis but once or twice a week (as I understood Poggio works more on a weekly rental basis than a daily one). There was a spa-relaxation room that I never got the chance to visit. We did though the wine tour and it was absolutely fantastic; our guide Andrea was great and told us sooo much about the local varieties and the estates belonging to the owners of the estate. One should definitely not miss the tour - even one is with children....they love it!!!
Foodwise, as I read in the previous review do not expect the place ot have full breakfast, lunch or dinner served...it is not a typical hotle you can call room service. There was this local pizzeria you could order if one wants to have a night in; we even went to visit the actual place (called Pablo's if I am not mistaken) which is vary basic, literally on the road w/t plastic chair but fantastic pizza!!!!! I have to note though that all the surrounding villages to the estate are VERY disappointing. If you have ever visited Tuscany before (the more traditional places arounf the triangle FLorence-Siena-Arezzo) you will find this area more industrial - full of furniture shops and not too picturesque. That is the only reason I would reconsider maybe going back to Poggio.

We stayed at this agritourismo resort during August 2010 and on first sight, it is a lovely spot, on the edges of Tuscany, not quite in the classic chianti region. It has an impressive, tree lined drive although not that easy to find from Pisa airport (road signs in Italy are not the most reliable).

Our apartment was spacious, very well furnished and had a lovely view over surrounding vineyards. We had a warm welcome from the family who run it and an excellent wine tasting and tour during our week.

However, the comfortable surroundings do not quite live up to their billing. We were told for example that food could be easily organised and we assumed from the literature that it came from either an in house kitchen or local chef. In fact it arrived take out style from a local pizzeria and was pretty inedible. Breakfast was also very poor.

Our main gripe was the fact that the resort's own 'good guest guide' made it clear that guests using the swimming pool should not jump, dive or use inflatables. This is primarily for safety (the pool is universally shallow) and for the enjoyment of everyone. Unfortunately, our enjoyment of the pool area was completely wrecked by too many screaming children all jumping, diving and using large dinosaur like inflatable objects making it a 'no go' area if you wanted a) a swim and b) peace and quiet. Despite repeated polite requests to the management to ask the guests and their children to abide by the 'good guest' guide, the problem continued throughout the week. To make matters worse, the owners son arrived one day and promptly dived in!

So what should have been a peaceful break, enjoying the lovely setting and countryside turned out to be anything but and for a destination that purports to be a place of relaxation at prices that are certainly at the top end of the scale, I would think twice before returning.

A shame really but you have been warned!!

The resort is absolutely lovely and well kept. It has a nice atmosphere and enough privacy for each family. Apartments are spacious and well equipped, gardens and pool immaculate upkeep. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they really took care of us always with a smile. Perfect location in Tuscany, quite close to Pisa Internationl Airport and to main Tuscan cities. We will come back next year! Alison & Joe
