FANTASTIC HOTEL This place is just wonderful - I just cannot say enough good things about it. We are two New York professionals hailing from Manhattan (steps from Central Park), traveling with three adolescents. We know this part of Spain well - one of us grew up in the region and has been coming to this part of the coast for over 40 years. This hotel makes a good base for exploring the Cap de Creus and the coast to the north. We love the fishing town of El Port de La Selva (check out the coastal paths behind the town, in the national park). Cadaques is simply not to be missed.
On this visit we were all absolutely enchanted by the Gri-Mar. First, it is full of truly authentic touches typical of this part of the coast: in the beautiful garden, one sees walnut trees, almond trees (near the terrace), beautiful pines and plantings characteristic of this area (near the pool). Other truly Iberian touches include charming cages with birds, big terracotta pots of brightly colored flowers, and, here and there, the gold and blue ceramic tiles manufactured in the nearby pottery center of La Bisbal. The pool was memorable - just gorgeous, and it never felt crowded. In fact, mom had a whole agenda planned for the kids to explore the area, but we could not tear ourselves away from the large, sparkling pool, and that's where we ended up spending most of our time. The rooms - and other parts of the hotel (bathrooms) - are spotless, with high ceilings, individual balconies, and an airy feeling. Yes, the decor is certainly vintage, but it is clean and comfortable. Though not pillow-topped, my mattress was brand new and very clean (I checked) and the sheets were fresh and crisp, and we woke up to a spectacular sunrise through the room's big picture-window. The hotel building charming and interesting: I loved the big sunny breakfast room, and the large terracotta-tiled terraces, surrounded by mature palms and eucalyptus on which the fresh and abundant breakfast is served. The décor is typical of the older hotels in the area, and everything, though not new, is lovingly maintained and has great character. In the parking lot, arbors and trellises have been planted to shelter your car from the sun – this extensive parking lot is a blessing in this coastal area where it is not always easy to find parking. The food at the poolside restaurant was absolutely delicious – local fish cooked right by the pool, and paella, expertly prepared, and served by courteous wait staff. In fact, what makes this family-run hotel exceptional is the wonderful personnel, which could not be more welcoming, helpful, or more eager to please (their advice and directions to the pharmacy were invaluable when one of my children stepped on a sea urchin at Cadaques). This is a truly fantastic hotel – we simply cannot wait to come back!
