“Amazing!!!!”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

We spent part of our honeymoon at Le Fontanelle and we could not have thought of a better place to start our life as a couple. The surroundings are idillyc, the facilities are perfect (brend new, chic and luxurious, but not ostensive), and the staff of the hotel was the best I have ever seen in my life. From preparing us a cheese set to booking and organizing a wine tour for us in Montalcino, the staff was brilliant. I will definetely try to come back!

We stayed at Le Fontanelle during May 2011 as a middle stop of our ten day's road trip to Tuscany and Como. The choice was not random. Before choosing the specific hotel, I was searching the Internet for days, looking up the hotels proposed by tourist guides. I was disappointed because there seemed no hotel that could combine e-ve-ry-thi-ng I would wish for: Picturesque views, living in a farm in Tuscany but with star quality comforts, BUT MOST IMPORTANT: Good Location. The hotel had to be away from the crowds but still in the middle of everything I wished to see in my first trip to Tuscany, that being the villages and the surroundings of the Chianti Road.
Until I came upon Le Fontanelle.

Apart from its perfect location - in the middle of nowhere, but at the same time so close to Sienna- (with the possibility of being driven to and from Sienna with the hotels bus at very suitable hours) (while with a rented car I knew that parking in Sienna was difficult) when trying to decide upon hotel reservations I also fell in love with the pictures of its beautiful gardens, the breathtaking views and the comfy rooms. So, we decided with my husband, although it was a bit extra money upon our budget, to book it over other hotels without a second thought. And at the end, we didn't regret it at all.

Making the reservation online, our anxiety of booking a room with specific views and on specific floor was immediately taken into consideration and with great respect. We were given everything we asked for. Also with the hotel being a little far away from 'civilization' we found the driving instructions sent to us via email more than accurate and helpful. What;s more, when delaying upon arriving the first night at Le Fontanelle (we arrived at 10 o'clock at night!), we found that the hotel reception desk had been leaving messages of concern in our answering machines both in our self phones as well as in our house in...Athens! The were afraid that we got lost, and were anxious of tracking us! We arrived 'dirty', tired from all our day touring and 5 minutes time before the time the kitchens restaurant was about to close. Despite all that we found ourselves being received with warmth and relief and were served in the restaurant without exception, we were treated like kings (the bistecca alla fiorentina was exceptional) or more like members of the hotel family I might say...

In general, the food at the restaurant, the room service and the breakfast was exceptional. Many thanks to the maitre signore ..... he was more than warm and attentive to all our needs and willing to answer questions or make day trip propositions. Many thanks also to the chef and its daily 'compliments' which were innovative yet very tasty, as well as to the Siennese driver ( I do not recall his name) who was warm and polite, made also day suggestions for Sienna and made us feel secure that he will be on time to pick us up, so we wouldn't have to worry just have fun for the rest of that day we were spending in Sienna.

About the rooms:Ok, there are rooms with better views than others, so what?Isn't that the case in most of the hotels? Also in our house, does every room share the same view with the others?Book in advance and ask for specific characteristics, the hotel staff will be MORE THAN WILLING to satisfy you...The beautiful photos that you might see on the internet do not make it justice, the hotel and its surroundings are in reality even more beautiful. The rooms are more than spacious (even the classic ones), with linen sheets, luxurious toiletries and beamed terracotta tiled ceilings. Soooo romantic!

The hotel also has a small shop with organic products, when leaving, they gave us a small bottle of olive oil from the shop as a present which we found very tasteful (and being from Greece, we are severe judges of what concerns olive oil! :))))

To make a long story short:Cannot wait to return there! I for sure recommend it, especially for those who want a treat of rural beauty, combined with impeccable professionalism and client attendance.

I recently spent 5 nights in this little bit of heaven. I was traveling with friends (three couples). The property will take your breath away. The location, 20 minutes outside of Siena is perfect for exploring Tuscany. The property is remote, but once you find it and enter the gates you will feel like you are in a different world. It is super quiet and relaxing. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and most speak English with ease. There is a garage to park your rental car. I can't imagine being there without a car unless you want to be totally cut off from society. I can imagine enjoying the quiet, the beauty, the pools and the spa for many days if I needed to decompress, but if you want to check out the area you'll need a car. This is a truly extraordinary place indeed.

Room Tip: Each room at Hotel Le Fontanelle are unique. I saw three rooms and I wouldn't complain about any...

My wife and I stayed here for a lovely two week holiday and found the hotel immaculate, beautifully furnished and catered for every need. It is set in lovely countryside on a hillside with breathtaking views over the Chianti vineyards. it is several miles outside Siena and some miles from the nearest sizeable town/village, Gaiole. That is a drawback if you wish to eat out in the evening: every such trip involves a drive on very winding narrow roads.

The hotel itself has apparently been restored fairly recently, facilities and furnishings are to the highest possible standard. The staff are delightful if perhaps a little more formal than you would expect in Italy. The food is excellent with a good breakfast, normally taken on the lovely terrace, and a fine menu for the evening.

Why then do I not give it full marks. Unfortunately, the prices for everything bought in the hotel are very high. We booked for dinner on the first night and were shocked to find that a two course meal with a bottle of the cheapest local wine on the list cost us about £80 a head. The food was very good but not michelin star quality. A small beer costs 6 Euros, as does a cup of tea or coffee.

Although the occupancy rate of the rooms seemed high, perhaps the high prices explain why the public areas of the hotel seemed so quiet. Almost nobody sat either around the pool during the day or in the bar and lounges in the evening. One explanation is of course that there is so much to see and experience in the region that people were out and about. However, I think the hotel might be surprised, both at how much more their income would be if they moderated their prices, and how much better the ambience would be as a result of more people around. Certainly, we as an example would not have eaten away from the hotel every night after the first.

In conclusion, I would heartily recommend this hotel for a short stay, but I would not stay there again for two weeks.

This hotel is regularly reviewed as faultless so expectations are high. Much is made of the breathtaking views of Tuscany which are beautiful, from the gardens and pool, but some rooms are more than deprived of views so check ahead. The real decision one has to make is whether you are looking for a slice of the "real" kind of rusticana type Tuscany or a more clinical execution with attendant mega pricing. Le Fontanelle definitely leans toward the latter. Whilst the view from outside appears to be warm and Tuscan, the reality on the inside is an almost clinical obsession with efficiency and order. Fake flower arrangements, regimented, heavily scripted staff and a host of laminated signs and instructions make you feel that nothing is left to chance - and maybe that is exactly what many guests want and why they are paying top dollar. If you want more informality and warmth there are of course alternatives - you pay your money and take your choice.
