“Unmissable, with some reservations!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014 via mobile

The Chateau des Reaux, near Saumur, is theatre from beginning to end! Yevgyni, a charming and charismatic Ukranian, larger than life and very generous with his "little drinks", together with his delightful wife, have almost completed converting this very attractive, gothic style, moated chateau and it's equally attractive grounds into a permanent gallery of stunning, vibrant modern art, with "the world's largest private collection of paintings of legs", predominantly female, displayed on most of the internal walls. Several easels with paints are discretely provided, possibly for visitors to contribute to the growing collection! The three days that we spent there were probably the most stimulating of our recent trip, although the sometimes erotic pictures may not be to all tastes.
On arrival, very late and well into the evening, we were warmly welcomed by our hosts and well fed in their sparkling dining room, with a lit log fire, elegant china and delightful table decorations. Breakfast comprised an attractive cold buffet, with scrambled egg as an option. Dinner was good, with some unusual dishes (eg carp soup) and a willingness to cope with special dietary requirements, but was quite expensive.
Service overall was well-intended but sometimes variable. The very willing but limited staff were at times somewhat pressed, requiring occasional reminders. Our bedroom, the Chambre du Chasseur, was comfortable, quite dark (probably inevitable in such a chateau), and decorated with objects from la chasse! We slept very well. Our bathroom was full of character but a little tired. The outdoor swimming pool was under renovation and the nearby railway line did not disturb us at all.
Overall, despite the several minor issues, we enjoyed our visit and would happily return, to re-visit the art collection, to enjoy the grounds with the black swans on the moat, to swim in the completed outdoor pool and to meet our hosts and their friendly staff again.

We really did not like this place. It caters to a very specific audience, but we honestly thought it was awful. It was not the French chateau experience we were hoping for. The grounds are pretty but the building itself looks a bit run down. The owner is very loud and in your face and the decor is extremely kitschy. The walls are covered in eccentric art work, and the owner seems to have an obsession with naked leg paintings.

It seems the types of rooms they have available vary quite a bit. Our room was dark and dingy and the bathroom looked like it hadn't been properly cleaned in a long time. There were dark stains in the toilet.

The chateau's location is in the middle of no where, the nearest place to go eat would be Saumur or Chinon. The Chateau offers a set menu for 50 euros a night, but we opted not to stay for it.

At 150 euros per night we booked this as a special treat. However, even if kitsch is your thing, we thought this place was ridiculously overpriced for what you get (especially considering that there are numerous B&Bs in the region with much nicer rooms that are half the price). Overall it is just not good value for money and I would not recommend it.

If you are looking for an eccentric (but expensive B&B) then this is an option.
Positives:Friendly service from Anton, good continental breakfast, good sized bedroom (red room) and a pleasant cycle from the Chateau to Chinon (25 km round trip mostly on the La Loire a velo route).
Negatives: Way over priced for the standard of furnishings and fittings especially the bathroom, the owner has a passion for leg paintings (!!) which are overwhelming, eclectic selection of furniture and there is audible rail traffic.
