“Great night out”
Reviewed 3 February 2013

Me and our lass have eaten in a couple of michelin starred restaurants in the last 6 months and I've got to say in terms of food quality, The Bruce arms is on par.

We went there early Saturday evening and were greeted by friendly staff who were not only pleasant but very knowledgeable regarding the food and drink on offer.

I had mussels in a white wine and loads of bread to mop up the delicious juices, our lass had chorizo, prawns and scallops, both starters were divide.

For mains we both chose venison with beetroot, the venison was cooked to perfection and the beetroot acted as the perfect foil to the rich meat.

Our lass had the creme brulee, which I was reliably informed was exceptional.

All in all, a really good meal.

Would we go back....... damb right!

A real shame as this used to be a great place to eat and stay a few years back, a real rural gem, but the place has really gone downhill, perhaps that's why we could get a room booking and a meal table so easily?

Room Tip: Try the other B&Bs/hotels in the area.

Moved up to Ripon from Leeds earlier this year, & have spent many hours trying out new places and attractions to eat, drink and enjoy. We had passed the Bruce arms 4 or 5 times on our way to other place & often thought of calling in to try out the food. On Thursday the 21st it was my girlfriends birthday, giving me the perfect excuse to make the call.

I am so glad I did. The pub was pleasant, as were the staff. The big shock of the night was the price. Just £45 bought a 3 course meal for 2, with a bottle of wine. This is an amazing achievement for any pub, never mind one with great food in such a pretty village.

I had read some mixed reviews of the Bruce arms, from not very good to amazing. I do not take much notice of the opinions of those I do not know, so tried it anyway. Please do the same. Some of the bad comments left by others, were of having to wait for their food. Those not out for an enjoyable evening, wanting a quick turn around of food and a bottle of W.K.D should avoid the Bruce arms and head to their nearest wetherspoons!!
The food was greeeaaat, & once again that price, wow. P.s the bottle of wine was exchanged for local beers and other drinks up to the value of £10. I have eaten at the Yorke arms, and the blue lion which are both lovely. We particularly enjoy the blue lion and have eaten there at least 4 times.
We have been on the hunt for somewhere a little closer to Ripon for a nice evening out with great food. We've tried many pubs and inns, some very nice places but nothing quite making the grade to be classed as somewhere special. We have only eaten at the Bruce arms once, but believe we have found a gem. We will be back very shortly to confirm this.

I’ve been to this pub before and the food and atmosphere was great and thats the reason why we went back.

However this time, 13th June Wednesday afternoon -1st impression we should have turned around and went somewhere else. The place now looks run down and I have never seen such a filthy carpet in an eating area ever.

We were greeted by a stern but polite lady who asked us if we were eating. On licking her fingers to pick up the menus that should have been the red light for me to make a quick exit! Disgusting habit to have in a place where you are handling food and drink.

We were the only ones in so we had the pick of the dining area-we choose a window seat that was pleasant enough if not slightly draftee.

The kitchen area is open so you can see and hear Chef and while we were waiting for our food to arrive we had the pleasure of listening to Chef Cough his guts up constantly with the lady behind the bar joining in albeit not as loud.

We both had fish and chips that were badly presented as they were piled up on top of each other on a narrow plate which made the chips underneath quite geasy.

The toilets stunk of mound but looked clean enough. The toilet rolls were sat at the ‘side’ of the toilet ‘uncovered’ in a basket with ‘used bits’ of toilet roll in among the other rolls. Goodness knows what the used bits had been used for! These may well have been from the day before as we were the 1st ones in. Again not a very hygienic move!

You may ask why we didn’t leave-well it was discussed but living local and the place being empty made it slightly awkward for us, but believe me we ate this food under great suffering only because we were both starving and pushed for time and tried to put the coughing out of our minds. However on reflection we should have just left and told them why.

I’m sorry that I have given this place a bad review but the hygiene in this place is bad. Chef-who I believe is the co owner, should know that he should not be coughing his guts up while preparing and cooking other ppls food- they should also teach their staff basic hygiene regarding licking fingers when serving customers. This is just plain and simple basic hygiene-disgusting and not open to argument, debate or excuses!

Would we go back-never?

Sublime food in the heart of the North Yorkshire Countryside! Meltingly delicious Lamb and Sweetly delicate Lobster made ours an evening to remember.

The 'service with a smile' attitude and little personal touches made all the difference to our romantic evening.

Our room was fleetingly simple and practically shabby chic (just ignore the access stairway and you'll be fine) - don't forget you get what you pay for... and we paid for Hughs Breakfast!!! When you think that bedrooms in Ripon City Center's Weatherspoons are over £70/night it's a steel.

We came up from London on a North Yorks tour and rate the Bruce Arms high up on our list of affordable places to eat and stay in the area. Unpretentious, friendly with amazing food!!!

What a gem in the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. Hugh, the chef and part owner was most welcoming. We had the 3-2-1 early evening special (three courses, two people and a bottle of wine) and spent three relaxing hours soaking up the wonderful food, wine and atmosphere. I have never before had a "cordon bleu" breakfast, a treat not to be missed.
