“Gastro pub on Tour de France route”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

Some friends gave us a £10 meal voucher for the Bruce Arms and as we were scoping out the Tour de France route we booked for a Saturday evening meal.
There are just two pubs in this small village north of Ripon and the Bruce Arms car park is quite small. However, there is a large free car park across the road junction from the pub.
There are two dining rooms adjacent to the entrance, the one on the left where we were eating is very pleasant and cosy.We were welcomed and had a drink at the small bar and perused the menu.Choices were quite limited, fine for me but my wife likes a wider choice. To me, a limited menu suggests all the dishes will be expertly cooked, and so it proved.
We ordered calamari and chicken livers to start, fillets of sole and sea bass with asparagus for mains. The menu did have extra items to showcase local asparagus, a nice touch.
We were seated and given bread and marinated olives straight away ( a previous reviewer seemed to be upset by the lack of bread,so perhaps he has had an effect!).
The food was very good, cooked within view of the kitchen from the dining room - always a sign of confidence - the livers being especially good. A nice touch was a large jug of iced water for the designated driver.
As is so often the case, the veg portions were a little mean which is disappointing within season at a rural restaurant. After commenting on this we were told that more was available for the asking, but many people don't like to ask.
Although the voucher we had said no bank holidays and this was a bank holiday we were allowed to use it and the two staff on duty coped remarkably well with everybody.
West Tanfield would be a good spot to view the Tour as the cyclist would traverse the crossroad presumably slowing down a bit, and there will be adequate car parking.Roads close about 9 am and the riders probably arrive between 4 and 5 pm but the Bruce Arms are doing a lobster lunch at£125 a head.
The village and the pub are attractive places in a rural setting and we enjoyed our experience there -well recommended.

“1st Visit”
Reviewed 25 May 2014 via mobile

Accompanied our friends to The Bruce Arms for our first visit - the choice on the menu, service and quality of food could not be faulted. We would definitely return and regret it has taken so long before our initial visit.

“An unexpected visit”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Arrive at the Bruce by shear chance. Was taking a trip with father going to all the haunts of his childhood and ended up at West tanfield where his brother once ran the Bull. We wandered around, decided to have lunch and seeing as my father's first drinking experience was in the Bruce we decided to try then for food.
Excellent, not busy when we arrived but the service was good, the food excellent.
Because it's made fresh to order, it can take time if you are in a big group but it's well worth it.
If you are the rushy type don't bother, all you will do is create a problem for yourself.
Will visit again

“Classy gastro pub”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

Although we didn't eat here we noticed the menu had some very appealing options at realistic prices. The pub itself is attractively and luxuriously decorated with lovely quirky touches including some interesting upcycling, e.g. old wooden crates as book shelves in the main bar. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and there's a lovely calm, relaxing atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit

“A real treat”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

This is where we go when we fancy spoiling ourselves. They have a nice small menu that is forever changing with the seasons. I like a small menu it is usually easier to choose, at the Bruce however I usually want it all! The food never disappoints you can tell they use great quality ingredients and it must be cooked perfectly.

I like the miss matched tables and chairs, I like the chunky bar and I love the cheerful bunting!

It's cool that you can see through to the kitchen to see the chef hard at work. The front of house staff are always professional and polite. To top it off the last time I ate here the Mussels were the BIGGEST I've EVER had!!
