My husband and I thought we would try this new 'Gastro Pub' The Pointing Dog. It had only been opened for 2 weeks. We ordered fish and chips. The fish was quite large but poor tasting and a bit on the mushy side. The chips were brown but hard on the inside. I suspect the person doing the cooking had put them in the fryer from frozen to brown them and that was it. The mushy peas on the side were 'minted' which did not seem to go with the meal of fish and chips. In the end we hardly ate much. I mentioned that we were disappointed with the meal to the waitress. She then spoke to what I believe was the manager who just shrugged his shoulders! We paid then left - and will not be returning again. They are charging gastropub prices for a very poor meal.

Some places are worth travelling the extra mile for - but not this one!

I was in a party of eight that went to the Pointing Dog on its first Saturday.
The exterior of the pub is very impressive and the interior decor was quite tasteful too.
They were the good points, unfortunately the problem is the food.
The menu is limited, the portions are small and extremely overpriced for what you get.
The starters are certainly not worth the prices that are being charged, £6.50 for chicken wings, £5.50 for a goat’s cheese salad and £5.50 for what is basically a cold (sorry, ambient) sweet potato omelette.
At first glance £15 for fish and chips looks a bit over the top but compared to the other dishes it was a snip and decent value.
Four sardines on their own with no accompanying veg at all set us back £10.50, a cheeseburger & chips was £12.50 but the biggest insult was £13.95 for possibly the smallest shepherds pie I have ever seen other than a weightwatchers meal for one microwave dish, again with nothing else.
I added a tiny speck of spinach for £3.50 and a mugful of “Maccy D” type fries at £2.95.
We had a selection of sweets including Un-baked Alaska, the waitress told us it was meant to be like that !! and our cheese board consisted of three morsels of a totally forgettable assortment.
We had five bottles of wine, three rose and two red, hardly vintage, at a cost of £119, not cheap again.

Our bill came to over £400, including the 10% service of £36.74 which I did not realise we were actually going to pay.

For an establishment like this to be recognised as a gastro pub, the menu needs to be improved, food needs to be much better, the portions should be increased and it should be far better value for money. You cannot charge these prices for the food currently on offer, at the end of the day it is still just a pub in Cheadle Hulme.

I realise that the owners need to claw back their £1.5m investment but surely they don't need to do it in the first couple of weeks.

It will be a long time before I or my friends return.
