My four-year-old son, a friend and I stayed at La Saugie for the first week in August this year. I had already been in touch with Alison by email some weeks before, and, based on our interactions then, I knew that we would feel welcome and at home the moment we arrived - and I wasn't wrong.

Sablet is a beautiful hillside town; and La Saugie was a perfect base from which to explore the surrounding region - as well as being a refuge when we decided to spend the day relaxing. The Avignon suite suited our needs down to the ground: the bedrooms were spacious - I loved the bathroom! - and there was nothing better than throwing open the doors in the morning onto the gardens and the swimming pool.

But, really, what made the trip for us were Alison and Steve and their family. They were hospitable without being overbearing; they were wholly approachable at all times, and more than willing to accommodate our needs in terms of extras for the room, and trips out. More importantly: we enjoyed their company immensely and felt as much a part of their family as a week allows.

We will definitely be coming back!

We had an excellent five night stay in the Vaison suite in as we said in the visitors book 'this garden of Eden' The hosts couldn't have been more helpful and we felt became our friends. We would recommend La sauge for anyone who wanted a tranquil few nights break in this most beautiful part if Provence. Our areas of improvement would be, personally a softer mattress, bearing in mind the heat in August bottled water in the fridge but other than that v hard to beat. We hope to return.

We have just returned from a 10 night stayin the Avignon suite with our 2 young children aged 7 and 5 and yes I would agree with the previous comments in that it is very clean, lovely garden and pool and the hosts are helpful with a basic but beautifully presented breakfast provided but the bed is very hard and uncomfortable. The couple staying in the other suite also commented how hard the bed was in theirs too.
We struggled to get toilet paper for our last 2 days of our stay and it felt like our allowance of it had been used and no more was forthcoming!
The hosts were helpful in may ways but also fussy. If a breeze comes up in an afternoon you will be asked to put the parasols down and told that they lose many parasols each year and they will check you have turned off night lights around the pool if you stay up for a drink on an evening.
The reason they can be so fussy is they always seem to appear as you get back from a trip out and as soon as you get settled in the pool area the owners appear and sunbathe and if family members are visiting the pool area can get noisy.
The feeling was that you were made to fit in around them and everything was being done on a shoestring which isnt reflected in the tariff which was quite expensive for what it was.
Villa prices without the luxury/comfort or privacy.
Overall 1 or 2 nights as part of a tour is ok but any longer and try a hotel or villa

As the owner of La Saugie I will address each of Lisa P’s comments in turn.

- 1, Our breakfast is far from ‘basic’. Lisa P makes no reference to what she is comparing the breakfast to so I don’t see how she can describe it as ‘basic’. We are a family run B&B in Provence. We provide a balanced Provencal breakfast, typical of this area of France. It includes a freshly baked croissant, a freshly baked pain-au-chocolate (or similar patisserie), fresh French bread, a glass of quality fruit juice, a pot of tea with a selection of tea bags/infusions or a pot of freshly brewed coffee, freshly cut and pealed seasonal fruit or yoghurt, 2 homemade jams & butter – and this is per person. How she can describe this as basic for a B&B baffles me.

- 2, Our mattresses and not hard. They are very expensive, traditionally sprung, orthopaedic mattresses specially imported from the UK. If she finds them uncomfortable then I can only assume she is comparing them to a cheap mattress providing no orthopaedic support. Lisa P is the first and only person to ever have complained about our beds in 8 years of running our B&B. In fact many of our guests actually comment on how comfortable our mattresses are.

- 3, The comment about the toilet paper is absolutely not true. My wife is very particular about insuring that there are always at least 2 spare toilet rolls in every toilet and not once did Lisa P ask for any additional toilet paper.

- 4, Lisa P, you may remember that your husband witnessed one of the umbrellas being blown into the pool – it is for this reason that we ask our guests to put the umbrellas down when the wind is blowing. As our guests safety is our primary concern, It would be very dangerous not to so when the wind is blowing.

- 5, We don’t restrict use of any lights. We have installed lights in the garden for our guests use and we simply ask them to turn them off when they go to bed. I don’t think this is unreasonable.

- 6, Lisa P, you were with us for 10 days and the only days we, as a family, joined you around the pool were on the Sundays. We consider Sunday a day of rest for everyone and once again we don’t think it is unreasonable for us to do this.

- 7, Nothing is done on a shoestring at La Saugie. In fact we reinvest a significant proportion of our income from the B&B back into the facilities we offer every year. In the interests of keeping this response short I won’t list everything we have done but I can assure you it is significant.

- 8, Regarding prices, you seem to be comparing us to a Villa so how you can arrive at thinking we are expensive when villas offering an equivalent level of services would cost 5 times the price you paid once again makes no logical sense and completely baffles me.

Finally, I would like to add one last point regarding your stay with us so that readers of your review can get a fuller picture of your stay with us.

Your children asked our teenage daughter to join them in the pool to play on many occasions during your stay with us. This was not a problem for us but as our daughter is under 16 it meant that my wife also had to sit by the pool to watch over her – again, not a problem. But even after explaining to you when you arrived that you had to be responsible for your own children whilst they were around the pool we had to remind you on at least one occasion to come out of your room to look after your children as they were playing in the pool and neither you nor your husband were to be seen. A very poor and dangerous example from someone says they work in the care industry in the UK

You must stay at La Saugie! We stayed here in 2005, and wanted to stay much longer than the few nights we did. It was a delightful place, a great value, and spotlessly clean. What more could you ask for than an English B&B in the French countryside? A wonderful garden, fine linens and the sweetest of hosts. We stayed in the Avignon Suite. The location is good if you want "off the beaten path" and yet want to see the usual places that are so popular in the Luberon. On one hand, I don't want to give this place away, yet on the other hand, Alison Infante deserves so much credit for her beautiful place and everyone should stay here!

Very hospitable, friendly hosts; great breakfast - served in room or out by swimming pool; convenient location for Vaucluse area. Accommodation had a double and 2 single beds in 2 rooms and opened out onto back garden & swimming pool. Free wifi was available but signal was not great for ipod touch - may be better with a laptop. Not sure how this place has not found itself on trip adviser before now!!
