“Great place to stay when diving or fishing”
Reviewed 21 August 2013

Sodwana Bay Lodge was the first leg of our trip to S. Africa in July 2013. It was just what I hoped for! The food in the restaurant was delicious(we recommend the filet mignon), and the cabins were very comfortable and clean. The location is great, just a short drive to the beach. The dive shop staff and dive team were friendly and accommodating. We had some great dives! The lodge arranged offshore fishing and Sean was a well seasoned Captain. If you're looking for a comfortable place to stay, with great food, and to serve as a base for scuba diving and fishing--this is it!

Every year my Wife and I and a group of friends do the pilgrimage to Sodwana for a weekend of Scuba Diving, I love this part of South Africa and the reef and people working the resort are fantastic, normally I would grow tired of going to the same resort and would try a different location but I find each year that I long for the return to Sodwana Bay Lodge, I do strongly recommend that you get together at least a party of 6 and rent out one of the Lodges rather than the chalets but that is purely for the luxury side of things and if you are on a budget then the dive packages and 2 bed chalets are all you need (they often come with a meal package)

I love the last stretch of road leading to the lodge and as you turn in you just feel you are back at home. Couple of cautions, there has been some reported increases in petty theft so lock your valuables away at the Lodge. Also if you are doing a self catering and this is your first time down to Sods then you are best buying your supplies at home as the shop? in the town is a little dodgy. Also if you are on a dive package try and plan to stay an extra day and take a trip to Lake Sibaya and on to Nine Mile beach if you are in a 4 x 4 where there are braai facilities.

Very Busy during March/April depending on the Easter Weekends but evn though it is so busy you never feel cramped. Another good time to go is Late September/early October.

Room Tip: The 8,10 and 12 sleeper Lodges are something to Behold, very well kept and space!

We stayed April 2013. We were on the second of a six leg journey through Africa and were still feeling a little overwhelmed. Richard made sure we were comfortable. He arranged our fishing with Magnum Charters and our captain Sean was both professional and patient. He did everything possible to make sure we caught something the first day. As the weather was not cooperating Richard made sure we had another half day the following day. Our king mackerel was the line catch of the day at the restaurant that night. On our day of departure Richard contacted the travel company, without our knowledge the night before, to ensure our ride was there on time for our next leg. While the lodge looks a little tired at the moment they are renovating. Our rooms were comfortable and clean, the food was very good and plentiful and the service was great. While we did not dive I can say that the dive shack was always busy.

I recently went diving with the Sodwana bay lodge diving group. The guys were very friendly and helpful. Dive master and driver were experienced and knowledgeable. Safety was a priority and they we were very professional. Sir Ben accommodated everyone's needs. The one tank dive provides flexibility to the number of dives you want to do and the time of day you can do them at. I would dive with them again.

Very good scuba diving experience, all staff from divemasters to skippers and support-staff were extremely proactive, professional and friendly. We were impressed with this! Lodges were alright for the price, missed internet-access a bit though. Restaurant very good with a varied menu.

My husband (scuba diver) and myself (non-diver) stayed at Sodwana Bay Lodge when we visited KwaZuluNatal in October 2012 and my husband wanted to scuba there. The Lodge is on the coast of South Africa just south of Mozambique. We bought a very affordable 5-day package that included lodging, food, and diving for my husband. Our private chalet was rustic but perfectly comfortable with a deck and chairs overlooking the forest. The staff was very nice and helpful. This is a dive oriented spot so the food was OK, sometimes fine, sometimes not so - don't expect gourmet dining. My husband said the diving on the Indian Ocean coral reefs was excellent and the dive boats and masters very good. While he dived, I hired a local birding and wildlife guide, Jabalani, to show me around. (The hotel will help you contact him.) On our last day we hired him to accompany us into a drive-through wildlife park where we saw lots of animals including both black and white rhinocerous - very exciting! All around this was a nice, welcoming, safe, comfortable place.

Stayed 3 nights. The room (a one roomed cabin) I stayed in was well appointed and comfortable, with a TV, but the walls are (I guess traditional) stick construction and give no sound proofing whatsoever, so you could easily hear what was going on with the neighbours.
Dining room had limited menu but what they had was very good ( I had the Eisbein one night - very good).
Dive shop reasonable. They charge extra (in addition to the dive fee) for everything; weights, tanks. Most other places I dive are all inclusive, the dive fee includes tank & weights, this may be a South African thing. Divemaster seemed a little inexperienced - he missed the reef on one dive which wasted 10 minutes worth of air. Not trivial, as they only do two dives a day, in the morning, as the wind/swell makes diving later problematic. Reefs were excellent, lots of life.
