“Lovely hotel shame about the silly extra charges”
Reviewed 8 July 2014 via mobile

Picked this hotel via Secret Escapes on an impulse which included flights & car hire. We weren't disappointed with our choice, the flight & car hire went well. Because the Lodge is a good hour to an hour & a half away from the airport l would recommend you choose a flight that enables you to drive in day light because although most of your driving is on a straight main road getting to it from the airport and then to the Lodge at the other end isn't as straight forward. We were greeted on our arrival by very pleasant English speaking staff who showed us to our room and gave us a tour of the grounds. We chose a garden room so that we had an outside seating area to relax in. Unfortunately there was a problem with flies while we were there so I recommend you purchase a candle on your way there.
The room was a good size with an ensuite. Very clean and well maintain through out our stay. You are given a free bottle of water on your arrival but you then have to pay for it to be replaced. Be warned!! If you bring water in from outside they will charge you corkage. While we were staying the WI Fi was not free and was quite expensive 25 euros a week and it is very poor compared to what we are used to in most parts of UK. You are also given separate pool towels but if you want them replaced this will also cost you 2 Euros. I personally found this all a bit annoying and marred what I felt was a well run hotel with very pleasant staff. The food I enjoyed and have to say I never felt hungry all week. It was good to try different foods served in different ways. A lot of comment about the food on Trip Advisor so I don't understand why people choose this hotel after reading them if it isn't their idea of dining. Drinks and the wine were expensive especially has the wine was local wine, not imported. We were given a welcome drinks evening on arrival and a wine tasting evening later in the week which was very pleasant and allowed people to socialise and get to know one another. You definitely need a car to get about we enjoyed the area visiting both towns and local sites and villages. The island and the people are pleased to have you there.

This hotel is very pleasant, has good accommodation, yes showers are tiny, lovely gardens and a lovely pool area. Peace and quiet guaranteed but do not believe all you read, this is NOT a foody hotel as the food is bland and of very portions. Having stayed in a fine dining hotel on more than one occasion I can say with knowledge that as the portions are very rich and highly seasoned, then small portions are more than enough but not when its bland. The hotel charges corkage on water - how ridiculous and the prices for all drinks is so typically "italian". As for the flies - oh dear, there is so much more the hotel could do but don't, and for this reason alone I would not go back. Sardinia is a lovely island the sardinian people are so very friendly and helpful so as and when we do return, it will be further north and on higher ground to get away from the horrid flies.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a garden room as you do get a view and a terrace to sit out on in the lovely warm...

Wont compete with a couple of previous entries re length because they appear to set the scene in quite some detail! However, whilst the grounds are really well looked after, the beds really comfortable, and the sitting out areas plentiful, we were plagued by flies, the shower cubicle in our room was a joke...and the description of 7- course meal stretches things slightly. There were frequently 7 dishes but all seven could comfortably fill one plate. On the last night, for example we had one quarter of a sea bass each for the 'main'.... Coffee and water at the table are extra's, Liquors a silly price.

We suggest that they fit fly screen in the rooms, have citronella candles at meal times, raise the height of the shower head and serve free water and at least one after dinner coffee for free too... A nice thing would be to supply guests with returnable beach umbrellas too, then it might be excellent.

Great staff, very quiet, lovely fellow guests, opportunity to walk from hotel, Pitzu Idu is a very good beach 5K away. We would say go for 3-4 nights. You cant go to Sardinia and not eat out watching the sun set over the Med. You also might need a substantial lunch each day...

Recommended.

Room Tip: Splash out on the garden rooms, not a lot more for a private sitting out area, we wish that had of d...

Is Benas is a beautiful country lodge situated near the western coast of Sardinia, just a few k's off the main North-South highway #131. The drive from the airport takes about one hour. We picked up a brand new Renault Twingo from the Avis concession at Cagliari airport, all part of the deal with Sartadur Holidays and headed off on our new adventure.

The drive up-country was pleasant enough, on quite empty roads by English standards. The sun was high in the sky and the hedgerows filled with wild spring flowers and herbs, their scent both heady and intoxicating. Isn't that the great joy of modern travel, one minute you're in heavy traffic and even heavier rain on the M25 when suddenly as if by magic you're transported to a new and lovely landscape with its own unique sights and smells.

After a thrilling and somewhat meandering drive from the 131, our fault entirely, we eventually found the SP10 and after a minor excursion along a dirt road arrived at Is Benas Country Lodge in dire need of a stiff drink and a marriage councillor, only joking!!

Our first impressions were of earth coloured walls, Bougainvillea, Lemon trees packed with big fat fruit, filled with juice, that tasted as sweet as lemonade.

Barbara checked us in, she is a very personable and charming young lady who speaks English beautifully. She showed us to our room on the first floor, there are only eighteen rooms in this lodge shared over two floors. It was a large room and smelled of freshly picked wild flowers, emanating from a pretty posy on the pillows in the centre of the bed. The room was beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean.

The en-suite bathroom was immaculate and fulfilled all our requirements. Free WiFi was available most of the time, but just like English rural areas, service was sometimes slow. As this was meant to be down time , a rest from the hussle and bustle of modern business, slow WiFi just didn't matter.

Although it was already past the official lunch period they opened the kitchen and served us wonderful antipasti. Delicious local meats, organic cheeses and salad were presented on wooden boards along with masses of homemade bread. Stunning Sardinian wine was poured to our great delight. This was when we first met Andrea, the Maître d' hotel and award winning Sommelier. He is one of those people you feel you have known all your life and wish you had. Andrea runs the front of house with great charm, lots of fun and he also has a terrific knowledge of wine and viticulture. During the rest of our seven day stay Andrea looked after us as though we were family, in fact it felt as if you had just dropped in to visit a much loved brother, that was the warmth of the welcome.

One morning the hotel gave the guests a wine tasting experience, we all had our noses stuck into large glasses as we smelled and tasted Sardinian wine while Andrea waxed lyrical about the quality of each variety. Suddenly there was a great clap of thunder as the skies opened and a deluge of rain poured down, fortunately not on us but on the bamboo and glass roof of a semi covered patio area where we were all gathered. The noise was intense and totally drowned out poor Andrea who stoically continued in spite of the conditions, now reduced to mime. We were all in fits of laughter as was Andrea. We learned a lot about wine and human nature that day.

The evening meal was advertised as a tasting menu made up of a starter, soup, pasta and a fish or meat course followed by dessert. The starter was always in three small bowls set on one plate each with something delicious and different in. This amounts to seven or eight individually prepared dishes. Over a seven night stay this amounts to around fifty courses. I usually like to choose my own food from a menu, but this tasting menu turned out to be great fun. Inevitably one or two dishes will not be to your taste, but with so much to choose from there will always be something that suits you.

We spent happy days walking along country lanes which smelled of Thyme and Fennel while looking at fields of golden barley and bright red poppies, with a painterly eye. Some afternoons were spent in or around the lovely pool, which is nestled inside its own patio and garden with plenty of shade from the now hot sun. The rest of the holiday drifted by in a haze of fine food and delicious wine, which was all produced locally and freshly prepared each day.

La ringrazio molto to Massimo Nioi the General Manager of Is Benas who is totally passionate about the concept of this establishment. He learned his business in London and still speaks fondly of the place but his passion lies in Sardinia with the history, geology, produce and lifestyle of this island.

Mi manchi Andrea, Paolo and Claudio. Arriverderci a presto.

Alan and Jane.

Great hotel for a relaxing week. Is Benas is a lovely, small (18 rooms) & friendly hotel. the rooms are large & clean, with big beds. The staff are great; very friendly & helpful.
The restaurant is on a terrace outside, but there are inside tables if you wish. The menu is a taster menu each night, mainly 7 dishes, with no choices, but it is excellent & uses local produce & local recipes. It was good to try ingredients that I wouldn't have chosen from a restaurant menu previously. Out of some 80+ dishes throughout the week, there were only 2 which we felt didn't quite hit the mark, & there were several which we felt were excellent - pretty good going as I'm quite (very!) fussy!
The wine is excellent, as is Andrea, the award winning Sommelier. We chose wine from the list of Sardinian wines for a couple of evenings, & then drunk Andrea's recommendations every evening after that - which were excellent every time. We also benefited from a wine tasting hosted by Andrea - big thanks to him for that.
The grounds are beautifully looked after & the hotel has a small garden where it grows some of it's own food. The pool is small but private & very quiet - a lovely place to chill with a book for the afternoon.
The hotel has wi-fi but it is erratic - the nature of the area & the hotel is such that I would recommend leaving your phones/computers/Ipads behind - it is very relaxing.
Please note that Sardinia as an island is bigger than everyone thinks - we did 1000 km in our hire car in the week & only explored about 1/6th of the island. The hotel is in a beautiful area but is out on its own - you will need a car & you will need to drive to get anywhere. Expect to stay & eat good food & drink good wine every evening - such a hardship!
The hotel does not have any children's facilities; it is a grown up haven of peace for lovers of food & wine.
We met some lovely people (including the previous reviewer Scott), & had a great week - thanks very much to Massimo, Andrea & all the other staff.

Beautiful setting - a real get away from it all place. Rooms are great but I'd recommend a garden room as you get a terrace. I think the food is really good - you get to try lots of different things. As with any tasting menu sometimes there'll be something you don't like but I really enjoyed the experience. The staff are fantastic especially the sommelier, Andrea, incredibly knowledgable and the wine tasting lesson was great fun (and free!). This was our third visit and we'll definitely go back.

I disagree with many comments about the gourmet experience offered at Is Benas Lodge. It is tasting menu and that is exactly what we got, a "taste" of the local Sardinian food and the comments about the quality and quantity on offer are rubbish!!
Yes three of the courses were on one plate, eg. A mussel, squid, a small amount of risotto a soup, this was equal to one starter plate in a uk restaurant, then the next three courses would be small meals such as fish, meat etc and then sorbet and dessert. It was more than enough for us and I never felt hungry afterwards, maybe those that did are more used to the likes of McDonald's!
As far as the comments about the price of the wine, I didn't think it was any more overpriced than a reasonably priced restaurant in London, we paid approx 18euros for a bottle of local wine which I think is good value.
The staff couldn't do enough for you and the ambiance of the hotel was quiet and relaxed.
We spent lovely days touring the surrounding area, and it was great to come back to the tranquil pool area in the afternoon.
As others have said, in the evening there was a great atmosphere where guests chatted with each other over drinks.
If you want constant activity and fast food Is Benas is not for you, but if you want to relax with excellent food and wine in tranquil surroundings then Is Benas is to be recommended.
