This is a small hotel in a wonderfully peaceful location on the hillside above Alajuela (on the road to Volcan Poas) with stunning views all round. There is a small courtyard pool, a lawned garden with deckchairs (and a great view) and a walking trail through a coffee plantation. We have spent several nights here, on three occasions, at the start and end of holidays in Costa Rica. The rooms on the first floor with balconies overlooking the central valley are our favourites. The staff are unfailingly friendly, helpful and efficient, and the free airport transfers fast and punctual (only 15 minutes door to door).

Stayed here the night of our arrival and the night prior to departure. We were picked up at the airport as promised and had a shuttle take us to the airport at 5:30 a.m. on the departure date. The staff was friendly and nice. There was free internet and Wifi as well. The rooms were adequate, not great but clean and reasonably priced at $96 a night. No air conditioning but it was not needed as the hotel is higher up in elevation. The short coffee walk is interesting as well. Overall, a good place to stay.

However, we arranged a rental car through them and it was through Avanti (a.k.a. U-save) rental car. Was quoted much more than the rental agencies at the airport but felt it was worth it to avoid driving through Alajuela at night on arrival. However, the signed estimate was in US Dollars but when we arrived in the US they had charged me $50 more than expected. When I called, they stated they had charged me a $20 cleaning fee (never mentioned up front, the car was NOT excessively dirty, routine dust from one week of use) and they had charged me in Colones (no other facility in Costa Rica charged me other than what was signed.) How they came up with the total in Colones is a mystery to me - again the signed contract was in US dollars. In sum, they were more expensive than the competition, charged mysterious fees that they did not reveal up front and charged more than we had agreed.

This was a very nice end to our Costa Rican vacation. The thing that strikes you about this hotel is that the staff seems to do everything. They're at the desk, They're manning the resturant. They drive the van. Everything. And with a smile. We had a great dinner and ended our trip in style.

We really enjoyed our stay here (only one night). The staff is super friendly and accomodating, the grounds are lovely and the breakfast amazing. We would come back.

I have stayed at numerous hotels in the San Jose/Alajuela area of Costa Rica. Since driving around the San Jose area is not something I care to do....ever....I always look for hotels that offer an airport shuttle...compared with the Hotel Buena Vista, other places I have stayed rank dismal at best. Unlike other area hotels, the HBV offers a tranquil and worry free place to stay. There are no honking horns, barking dogs, slamming doors, airplanes roaring overhead, noisy travelers and their escorts coming and going at odd hours of the night. Instead one gets a great night's sleep in a pleasant atmosphere with what has to be the most incredible service you will experience anywhere in Costa Rica and beyond. While the rooms are simple and some might even say they could use a bit of updating, the atmosphere and service you receive are absolutely exemplary.
