This is a lovely hotel, full of character and history. The setting is spectacular and peaceful yet not remote. We had a very good size room in the main building with great views over the estuary. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and it was nice to have a traditional pub bar on site.

Room Tip: If you want character ask for a room in the main building.

Stayed here for a weekend in May and were blessed with gorgeous weather. On arrival we were shown to our room which was small but well furnished and with a lovely big bathroom. We had two dogs with us and they were welcomed, provided with beds, treats and bowls - they even had their own room service menu!! The hotel is in a lovely position and we didn't venture far afield over the weekend but enjoyed the Saturday morning market in Lymington, had a picnic at Buckler's Hard itself, went on a short boat trip and walked to Beaulieu twice, and had a lovely walk in the New Forest on Sunday morning. Didn't have time for a visit to the Buckler's Hard museum itself, which is a good excuse to go back!
We ate in the bar on both evenings. On the Friday I enquired what was in the fish pie, specifically about whether there we mussels in it - I was told 'no' but decided against ordering it - my husband did however, and low and behold his first forkful came up with a mussel. It is important to get this type of thing correct given shellfish allergies etc. On the second day I ordered a glass of Prosecco only to be served from a bottle that was at room temperature and not very fizzy - when I queried this I was offered ice. However, I persevered and it was replaced from a fresh bottle from the restaurant. This may seem a small point, but a glass of Prosecco is a treat and should be served properly. The restaurant staff at breakfast were very friendly and attentive. I think that a little more attention to these details could pay off, however if the occasion arises I would return. On the whole the food was good, not spectacular but not expensive either. I can't comment on the room prices as the weekend was a gift. Addressing the minor issues and I may well have given an 'excellent' rating.

We've stayed here just for 1 night and really liked the room, it had a really nice ambiance and we liked the decor. There was a good choice of good quality tea/coffee products in the room as well as a small sample bottle of an elderflower vodka which we tried and both liked!

We arrived just in time for lunch and had food from the bbq in the garden, the food was good but due to it being a Bank Holiday they were very busy and (it appeared) that they were understaffed as well as there was a long queue and the two people serving us appeared to be very stressed.

We have also had a dinner at the restaurant in the evening and again the food was ok but we had a problem with our bill as we weren't being charged for the right things and it proved very difficult to resolve it.

Apart from these 2 mishaps we really enjoyed our stay and absolutely loved the location, we went on the 2 mile walk to Beaulieu village and really enjoyed the walk and village itself.

It's worth pointing out that if you're staying at the hotel and don't want to spend a lot of money on food there's also a pub in the same building that does good range of food at a normal pub-price.

Thank you for your review and I am pleased that you liked your room. We have become a popular location for bank holidays and I am sorry that you had the wait that you did for the BBQ. We try to find the right balance on numbers of staff and the weather forecast and many apologies that we didn't get it right this time.

We had planned this trip for my 70th birthday, the family live abroad so we wanted something special. The day was made very special, as we were shown into our room, there was a big bouquet of flowers sent by our son in North Carolina, who said later that the local florist and the hotel were very helpful. The room was very good with a double aspect to the river and the cottages. Dinner was also crowned by youngest son who lives in Guernsey arranging for a special bottle of wine to be served with dinner. The fact that the staff knew it was my birthday they made a special effort, and even called a 70 year old woman, "birthday girl" we rounded off the evening with a couple of drinks in the bar again with good company. It was a lovely evening with a full moon shinning in our bedroom. After a nicely served breakfast and a last walk along the river. We made our way home via Lymington. A great place to spend a birthday.

Room Tip: Pay for the luxury room for a special occasion it is worth it.

In need of a something a little more luxurious after my son's rugby tour we sank into the large bed with relief - it was about the size of the two 'bedrooms' put together in the caravan. Despite size of bed there was still more than enough space for my son's bed as well in the room

Had a very nice dinner in the bar, nice beer also. Friendly staff.
