“A little island of tranquility in Bijilo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2011

Our 5th visit to the Gambia and one of the best. The Kingfisher Apartments, were far enough away from the main hustle and bustle of Senagambia, but near enough to go and eat out. The two lads that take care of the rooms and the area around the pool, were always full of fun and willing to do anything for us,including going for freash bread every morning. My husband had a stroke 5 years ago,and has limited mobility, the apartments were ideal for him, with just 4 steps upto the front door then everything on one level including the shower.
Mitch and Collete who were looking after King fishers made you feel like family.Hope to return in April.

What a wonderful place! We were made very welcome and helped with 'first time' nerves by the hosts taking us to their local bar, the supermarket to get provisions and elp with changing money.
The staff are excellant, nothing too much trouble. The apartment was spotless and with only 4 apartments our holiday was the quiet and quality they advertise. We'll be back!

If you like hotels with activities, buffets and nightlife, then this isnt for you. If you want a peaceful hideaway and a more genuine Gambian experience then this glorious little haven is exactly what you're looking for. The owners, Lesley and George are extremely helpful. They gave us good information on what to see and do and put us in touch with a trusted local driver. The apartments are clean and have everything you need and the staff are friendly and keen to please. The pool is small but lovely - and if you fancy a longer swim occasionally then some of the hotels nearby will allow you to use their sunbeds and pool for a very small charge.
Dont be put off by the thought of bumsters. Yes, you will be approached at every turn by someone wanting to sell you something or asking you to 'sponsor' them, but it's not threatening and, if you feel inclined, it can be a good opportunity to engage in conversation with local people and find out more about life in Gambia. The Gambians by nature seem to be very friendly, welcoming people with a good sense of humour.
There are supermarkets a short taxi ride away for self catering supplies. For eating out then Senegambia - again a short cheap journey by local taxi - has a strip of bars and restaurants and live music.
Lovely!

I very much enjoyed my recent short stay at 'Kingfishers.' It is a real haven of peace as well as a great base for sight seeing and birdwatching walks. Just what I needed after the 10 days 'upcountry' in Sambel Kunda.

For peace of mind and safety these apartments were excellent. The service was very good every thing you needed and the staff were already ready to help. The rooms were a very good size, bed linen, towels etc. changed on a regular basis. Being self catering they had all the equipment you required and good quality. The location was very good just being set back off the main highway but within walking or short taxi ride to "The Main Strip" and many restaurants. The main thing I liked was that we were made very welcome by the owners and staff and shall be returing next year.

We booked an apartment at The Kingfishers to relax for a few days after doing charity work up country in the Gambia. What a find! There are just 4 lovely apartments around an enclosed garden with a small pool. It is set a few hundred yards back from the main road, so is wonderfully quiet. We were made to feel at home by the owners, Lesley and George, who come from Scotland. Their small team of staff were always available to help and were very friendly and pleasant - we got on particularly well with Sait (though it would help if I had known more about football, as he is fanatical about it!). A quiet stretch of beach is only 10 mins walk away as are a number of reasonable restaurants. The Senegambia area is a short taxi ride away (or a 40 min walk) and Bijilo Forest Park was also nearby. The apartments have a lovely bedroom with an en-suite shower room and a small kitchen/dining area.
The price is ridiculously cheap (don't tell the owners) at 800-1000D per apartment per night.
