We stayed christmas 2013 and on arrival was allocated a room overlooking the carpark. We asked to be moved immediately as these rooms are appalling. The staff were excellent and moved us the following morning. Room was large with A/C a mini fridge and view of pool and sea.
Monkeys walked freely around the grounds. All the staff are excellent and we had a fabulous stay here.

Room Tip: do not have a room near the shop or car park

We recently stayed here for a week and had a fab holiday, hotel was good we read plenty of reviews before we decided on staying and we glad we decided on this hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was quite big, very clean, fresh towel everyday . Breakfast was good and service good.
The captains table restaurant was full every night and the food was really good, we also enjoy the kora and jo jos. We fortunately found Aziz the bird man, we went to brufut woods, well worth a visit and also tanjie for sea birds.
Gambia was never on my list of destination, but i have to say this was a holiday of a life time an experience we will never forget, memories we will cherish

We would highly recommend this hotel and Aziz our able tour guide

My husband and i have just returned from a week at Bijilo Beach Hotel, Being the end of the season it was very quite and peaceful. The hotel was spotlessly clean, staffs very friendly and breakfast is fine with different choice . We Eat most lots of times in the hotel. Excellent food and brilliant waiters.
On our first day we met Aziz the bird man,who took us for a walk around the kotu creek. He was brilliant, writing down all the birds we have seen for us to look up in our books when we got back to the hotel. He was very knowledgable and extremely patient, helping me to spot the birds. He also arranged for us to visit the National Park and other birding excursions.
Would definitely recommend Aziz and Bijilo Beach Hotel

This hotel is great for 2 reasons: virtually every room has a nice ocean view, and the staff is very nice and social. This is the second time I stayed here and already it feels like home in Gambia. Visiting higher rated hotels nearby (for a day, not staying - Coco, Sheraton, Caraiba(this one's nice though)) confirmed for me that this is the right choice. Less luxury, but the AirCo and the shower work fine, and the bed is good. What else do you need, are you going to stay in your room? The small scale of the hotel makes a big difference, you know the staff after a few days - if you're social, you'll not be short of chats. Pool is good.
The breakfast is more spartan than elsewhere, but the staff is flexible and extras are possible (pancakes :-) ) Dinner, ask Fuji, the chef, for his steak flambee, and you'll be charmed. There are also good alternatives close by (the dutchman on the right, Coco with its thai and french restaurants).
Likewise, visit Ramona the incredible masseuse, and enjoy (the fee is very low, she has to pass on a lot, so any extras on the side are appreciated).
Also visit Sarif (sp?), alias Buddymax, at the beach on the left. A smart and lovable guy giving you incredible extras if you order a juice (for 75 Dalasi or 1.5 EUR); the extras will be your lunch!

What else can I say? Gambians in general are a very nice people - "it's nice to be nice!" is their credo... Of course here like in any other tourist destination you have people trying to take advantage of you, but here it seems less to me. Shopkeepers in general accept a no with good humour.

PS watch out for the Acoustic Boys. They're great!

Room Tip: Ask for the 2 rooms on top of 306 - great view and as private as you can get in this small hotel. No...

We only use the restaurant & beach here as we stay in my Dads compound. We have been coming here for about 10 years. We have seen the many changes and after our visit in January there have been some lovely changes to the restaurant. Its lovely to sit outside on the beach side in the shade to eat our lunch. Its looking fab.

The staff always recognize us when we come back and welcome us. We only use the beach area and the sun loungers are set slightly off the sandy beach on a grassy area which is nice as after a while the sand gets annoying. There are juice stalls and a fruit lady if you want some refreshments. This time, the staff come and ask if you want any drinks on the beach, I thought this was a nice touch as before you had to go and get your own. They leave you alone if you say no thank you, they are all very polite.

We always have a few beers and lunch here. The food is a bit hit & miss, the first lunch (this time) was a bit rubbish which put me off a bit but then we visited another 2 times and the food was lovely so they must have just had an off day. It hasn't put me off though and I am looking forward to returning here.

If you want quiet, relaxing time then this is the place to be.

We went for one week and ended up in a two room apartment with a wonderful seaview from the porch.
The apartment was ok, at least the living room and bedroom. The kitchen utilities was very worn down and we did not use it at all. The bathroom seemed quite newly refurbished, but some tiles on the bath tub were missing and the top hinges on the door was not tightened at all. But, we did not spend a lot of time in the apartment so these were minor letdowns.

The restaurant served mainly good food. The fish they served was excellent and so was the meat. However, if you want your steaks well done, be sure to point it out. This because they seems to make them medium, even though well done was ordered. At one point a well done steak was ordered, it came to the table as medium, they brought it back and the next time it came back, it was still a medium. Besides that, the staff are very friendly and tries their best to be at service. The breakfast was good, with a variety to choose from, although I had expected more fresh fruits. The entertainment that is performed every evening can be a bit loud, especially from the drums, and can be a bit annoying.

When it comes to the pool area, I cannot judge it because I did not stay there at all. This because I prefer the ocean and beach. But it looked ok from a distance.

The beach area was really nice, with a lot of space between the sunbeds on green grass. The staff can be a bit pushy, asking every 20 minutes if we would like something to drink. But after the third time in one hour, we said "No thank you, we are fine. We'll let you know when we want to order" and that worked. On the beach Abdu and Kebba are very service minded and do their utmost to serve. Near the sunbeds there are boots where the locals make fresh juice and fruit plates. We more or less bought our daily juice from Sheriff who was a nice guy.

We walked south on the beach and found a nice gem, The Blue Ocean Bar, where we bought a beer (or two) on a daily basis. If you are lucky you might see when the locals fish during that walk, and its very nice to see how this is done.

On the premises there is also possible to get massage. We took it two times and I can really recommend it. Sally and Ramona are very good with their hands and a back massage is good addition to a relaxing holiday.

Over all, we are satisfied with our holiday and we will probably return in 2015 to Bijilo.

Room Tip: Apartments 236-238 is on the ground floor with a stunning view of the ocean.

We reserved late so we didn't have much of a choice of rooms. The first room they showed us had a tiny bed (we hoped for a king sized). We got a room (407) with a bigger bed, but the bed was awful. Sheets came apart. Bed creaked. Mattress was really thin. This is unfortunate because we liked everything else about the hotel. Friendly service; nice pool; good restaurant and breakfasts; on the beach. They had a 110-v adapter so my wife could recharge her e-reader, but the computer in the lobby did not work.

I've got to believe the beds in other rooms were better. Check the bed before you agree to the room. If the bed is comfortable, you'll like everything else about this hotel.

Room Tip: Check out the beds before agreeing to a room.
