“A special place”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Hotel Crillon le Brave in the village of the same name is perched on a hillside facing Mont Ventoux. The view of Mont Ventoux and surrounding country is spectacular. The hotel is a château that was converted some years ago into a hotel. It is part of the Relais-Château group.

The hotel aspires to luxury status and charges very high prices. While there is no doubt that it is a good place to visit the Mont Ventoux area including, for example, Vaison-la- Romaine, Orange, Avignon, and Carpentras, it suffers from disadvantages. First, it is a ramshackle site with different types of rooms and suites of varying quality in separate buildings. To reach the swimming pool from the reception floor, guests need to descend a rather steep flight of stairs The pool itself is rather small and thus disapponting.

The hotel personnel are very nice and helpful; but the reception is somewhat chaotic. We were asked to change from a very sizeable room, which we had on special offer, to a much smaller one at more than double the price. We successfully resisted that attempt. Our room was air conditioned, but we were told that such is not the case for all rooms. There are few rooms, if any, with terraces.

The restaurant is good but not great. We found breakfast to be good but not better than breafast at one of the major chain hotels. It is included in the price of the room On one evening we had a wonderful terrace table with a spectacular view of a moon rise.

Bicycles are available for the hardy souls who are prepared to do some climbing. Children are welcome; but there is not, as far as we could tell, very much for them to do other than swim.

Our conclusion: good for a one-time overly expensive visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the valley looking on to Mont Ventoux. Make sure that it is air conditioned. P...

Perched on top of a old town on a hill, this fabulous place is not for anyone who can't walk up and down stairs. But if you don't mind steps, the views are wonderful, the rooms large and lovely, and the service terrific. The first room we were given had an odd smell, and when we we complained about it they apologized and immediately moved us. (That room had a big bathroom with a shower that had double rainheads and was HUGE.) Our next room was way down in a separate house -the hotel is made up of many houses- called Ventoux, that I think may be only used when the hotel is full. We got another big room looking out over a small pool for that house only and looking over gorgeous countryside. This house had its own concierge who made us breakfast and functioned as a butler. We had dinner delivered to us and ate alone in the outdoor dining room, looking out over the beautiful Provencal landscape, totally taken care of by our lovely concierge. (We also saw a friend's room - very different again with its own small garden and terrace. Equally lovely.)

The hotel is a good stopping off place for lots of local sights, (we drove to Orange, to Mt Ventoux and to Villeneuve-les-Avignon on different day trips) but don't even consider it if you don't have a car. Staff were exceptionally friendly and kind, all spoke perfect English (as well as French, of course) and we saw many families with small children. as well as couples.

We were there in the third week of July and it was hot everywhere in Provence. For all three nights that we were there, huge clouds rolled around Mt Ventoux and there were lightning storms. This is apparently unusual. Excellent air conditioning in the rooms. I bet this would be fabulous in spring and fall.

Room Tip: If you're willing to take a room far from the main dining room and the main swimming pool, you m...

In line with other reviews all expectations were met. Staff were excellent in all departments, from welcome to departure - attentive but not intrusive. As others have stated the views were wonderful (both ways if you get room 31, double aspect!). Even the thunder storms over Mont Ventoux were inspirational. Food is not cheap but excellent quality, with breakfast being particularly nice on the terrace with those morning views. There are evening options close at hand (walk). The Petite Crillon next door offers a good if limited menu at reasonable price - and the guy is not miserable! Then you have Vieux Four at the rear of the hotel and a couple of other bars/restaurants in the village.

Room Tip: Room 31 above reception has double aspect views to die for.

We have stayed twice now for a week in July 2010 and June this year and fully intend to come back again. As soon as I walked into reception and looked out at the view I thought yes we made the right decision to come back. We had a lovely prestige room in Maison le Jas with huge bed, sitting area and stunning views. We felt instantly relaxed and as soon as our bags arrived we went down to the pool for swim followed by cocktails served at our sun lounger. We stayed for 5 nights and ate in the main resturant twice and Bistro 40 teice which is an excellent addition to the hotel since our last stay. Sadly the mistral was blowing so we didnt get to eat on the main terrace with its stunning views and dive bombing swallows. The staff were brilliant and nothing was to much bother. We were sad to leave!

Having recently returned from France after being away for two weeks I am missing France in general and this hotel in particular. The location couldn't be better for visiting the area, the staff are genuine and accommodating, the restaurant won't help your waist line and the view from the pool is incredible. I travel extensively, both pleasure and business, and this is my favourite in France. I will go again and stay longer!

The setting for this establishment is exquisite. Pleasantly uncrowded and although fairly formal the service is quietly correct and impeccable. The outdoor seating overlooking Mont Ventoux and the Luberon in the distance is dramatically beautiful. Lunch was fabulous and all the dishes went down a treat. I would love to come back and sit inside on a cooler day and sample the famous Agneau on the spit. Wonderful place and extremely well priced. I will be back!
