We arrived after a long bike ride only to be told that there were no rooms for us due to an overstay by existing guests. Although we had received an e mail confirming the rooms 3 hours earlier.
Another guesthouse close by was offered. Ok. No hot water and bad beds. Got the beds fixed an an offer to stay at the Alex the following day. Bad weather the next day and looked to go back to the Alex only to be told, yes you've got it, there were no rooms.
Left for Cat Ba only to have a heated and tiresome discussion with new place and Alex Hotel about who was to be paid for our stay. A walk through the garden of understanding by myself got the passports back and on the road out of Ha Long Bay and as far away from Alex Hotel as possible.
It's not finished yet!! Booked through Booking.com only to find that Alex Hotel had said we were a no show and tried to collect cash from my card!!!
Book at your peril. In fact avoid Halong Bay completely. It's a Vietnamese Margate!! Go to Cat Ba. Immensely better.

After initially seeing on trip-advisor/booking.com that Alex Hotel had a fairly high rating, we decided to roll the dice and book a one night stay. Upon arriving to the hotel, we quickly learned that the desk concierege spoke basically no english and couldn't even answer basic questions, not to mention how rude he was. He informed us that the room that we had booked was NO LONGER available. What was the point of making a reservation?!?!?? He tried to explain via some excuses but in the end he gave us a double bed, rather than the single king that we had booked.

The walls were VERY thin in the hotel as we could hear all of the nearby guests. The hotel couldn't even properly explain to us where the local bus station or any nearby restaurants were.

DO NOT bother with this hotel. They are truly run ineptly and we did not enjoy our stay here at all. In fact, we wonder how in the hell it got the current rating that it did?

We had a great stay at Alex hotel. It is a good value for the price. The room was clean. The staff is Friendly. There are some restaurant nearby. They also own a travel agency so you can book with them for halong bay boat tour and other trip. We bought flight ticket.

I stayed two nights at the Alex Hotel. The room was clean and equipped with an air condition. At times it was a little noisy due to construction works. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Near the hotel is a bus station from which you can visit downtown Ha Long for 10.000 VND.

Everything exceeded expectations! The staffs was very helpful and kind, and without them we wouldn't have experienced many things that Halong city has to offer.
Beds were great! And it was so nice to return from our tour to a place to rest even though we had already checked out.
Halong bay tour was a really lovely trip and the food was delicious. We loved kayaking and doing cooking class. Was never doing and we will recommend to our friends.
