“Good Inn or small hotell on the east coast”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

This traditional Danish Inn is quite large with up to 60 rooms in different buildings on the grounds of the Inn. We had a room facing the courtyard and it was light and airy with traditional Scandinavian furniture.
The Inn is located in a small village near the extremely long beach on the east coast of northern Jylland. You have a small selection of shops nearby, or you can drive to Fredrikshavn, Hirtshals or Aalborg for more shopping (all cities less than 1 hour away).
Please take the opportunity to have dinner in the restaurant here - you will not be disappointed!

The hotel had nice clean rooms, great self served breakfast with make-your-on-waffles station, helpful and friendly staff. We only stayed one night, but it was close for visiting the local towns of Skagen and Frederikshavn

The accommodation was fine but in outbuildings in a large complex so we had to keep the curtains shut much of the time as people were constantly walking past . Staff were friendly but quite direct in their dealings with customers if they did not know you well. The owner was happy to talk for a while about life in Denmark but was very busy for much of the time. Food at the restaurant was very plentiful and excellent for a family. They seemed to find it strange when I asked for a hot drink in the late evening before bed, but got used to this! Parking was free but ti was crowded - so obviously a popular hotel - more like amotel - and a good alternative if the prices in SKAGEN were too high.It did not take long to drive there each day.

This is a pleasant Kro. The food is good, the staff friendly and attentive and the grounds are very nice. The rooms are basic, but the beds are comfortable and the rooms clean. Having glazed doors on the room leaves a little to be desired - anyone can see straight in unless you have the curtain drawn, but as an overnight stay on a touring holiday it is fine as I don't want to live in the room, just sleep. The evening meal was excellent - some of the ingredients appear to be grown on the premises - and breakfast well provisioned and tasty.

The disappointment began when we turned the corner of the road after the roundabout and first glimpsed the Kro! It looks nothing like the lovely glossy, photo shopped pictures on their site. This is a tired, well-worn roadside motel. The room was so disappointing and upsetting we almost turned around and left - only we had nowhere else booked at time was getting late. The bedroom furniture is old and exceptionally cheap. The carpet is very worn, and doesn't even fit the room properly. As for being able to lock your room door, the signage telling customers how to lock the door is so well worn, it is only just possible to see where instructions once were.
On a positive note - yes, there is one, and it is only fair to give credit where credit is due - the Kro's restaurant provided delicious food. The menu choice is not extensive, however both meals we received were very good. I enjoyed the beef with onions, replacing the butter with a very delicious gravy ( brown sauce, in Danish) and my fiance chose the fish of the day. His meal was very colourful, with fresh real vegetables and a lovely accompanying sauce. Wine seems to come by the bottle, but staff happily point customers in the direction of their few options by the glass. Our young waiter serving in the evening was very polite and helpful, and the time to receive the meals was appropriate for what was ordered. One must look past the dirt on the wallpaper beside some of the tables - old food stains - past the clashing old decor, and 1970s pine ceiling with ill fitting light fittings.
The reception staff do not like it when customers checking out question their 1.4% charge levied upon people paying by credit card. We thought passing on bank charges to customers within Denmark was now illegal - will be checking the facts for ourselves.
All in all, the beds were reasonably comfortable, the food was good.
Walls of rooms are thin, and you can hear people beside you as well as people walking around above.
Stay here only if you dare.

We stayed at this hotel because everywhere else in Skagen was fully booked. The room was small and tired looking. Having a glazed door and windows gave anyone passing the room full view unless you wanted the curtains closed. Even the breakfast wasn't as good as the other hotels we stayed in, so I wouldn't recommend this hotel unless you are looking for somewhere you can park outside your room and see straight in. The walls are so thin you can hear all the other guests. Depressing!

A 20 minute drive south of Skagen lies the quiet town of Ålbæk, and by the roadside the friendly Ålbæk Gl Kro. The rooms are fresh and clean (stayed in a standard+ room) with flatscreen tv, a comfortable bed and blankets, and a decent bathroom. The restaurant prepares some typical danish dishes at fair prices and with great taste. It's not a restaurant that will ever make it into the michelin guide, but we enjoyed having our dinner there. There are often special packages such as all inclusive deals, or weekend prices so check their website or give them a call regarding this.
