“Wonderful & wild”
Reviewed 14 July 2012

What a stunning part of the world. Unfortunately, the weather was very wild with strong winds & heavy rain. The studios are lovely & comfortable with everything you need. We had trouble getting the heater going & realised an electrical plug was the problem so once we plugged it in to another outlet we started to warm up. You can lie in bed & look out to the sea. The penguins came in around the studio through the evening & then about 3am starting calling out. It was a novelty for us, I don't know how it would be every night but we thought it was pretty special. Due to the bad weather we didn't walk along the beach but we did go for drive around the morning we were leaving. Would love to go back & have a few days here, it's so wild & unspoilt.

What a location! Right on the beach with a view to die for. Unfortunately for us, it rained for most of the time we were there, but it's a testament to the place that we still loved it. The feeling of isolation was great and made it a perfect finale for our trip. It seems that the dolphins and penguins didn't fancy the weather much either - not a single sighting, although we did bump into a sea lion on the beach.
However, the highlight of the trip for us was listening to the young penguin activity under the house at night. Not best for a good night's sleep, but we were very happy to be kept awake sharing a home with such special neighbours.
The accommodation itself is very well equipped and maintained - lovely, large comfortable bed and stunning views through the huge windows. Don't really need much else!

We would keep this place a secret if we lived in NZ, but just had to give credit to the owners for allowing us to share such a fabulous property.
The cottage location is a dream, so unspoilt; and the simple yet comfortable decor completes the idyll.

If you want a few days to recharge your batteries away from your mobile phone, TV and radio then this is the place for you. We stayed at the apartment which is part of the owners' house and it has the most wonderful view across the grass and then straight across the beach to the sea. We pushed the settee around and made a cup of tea, later a glass of wine and just watched the waves lapping the shore and every now and again we saw Hector dolphins frollicking in the water.

The room itself was big and airy with the most amazing (and comfortable) bed. It was hand made by Nick and is very rustic which suits the setting. There was a settee and a table and chairs and Dani made sure there was a supply of fresh coffee or tea and milk. The bathroom had an excellent shower or a bath, good for soaking after a long walk.

We had taken our own food for the first night which we cooked on the two burner electric stove but there was also a microwave had we needed it. We also took our own breakfast provisions as we found out that apart from a little shop in the caravan park there was little else.

One night we also went to the Niagara Falls cafe which was about a ten minute drive. The meal there was quite good but we felt that the serving of blue cod was a little underwhelming in its size!

However the main reason for going along this coast is that it is so amazing. To see a Fossil Forrest just down the road which was 16 million years old is incredible and then to go back later in the evening and see the Yellow Eyed penguins was an added bonus. We went in March and believe me you needed to wear several layers of clothes with a warm jacket on top as it was cold, however it was well worth it. It was apparently not the best time for spotting penguins but we did see four in total.

The beach was flat and so we took a couple of walks breathing in that lovely pure air. We also drove to the George Aiken walk which was only a short drive away and rather lovely as it meandered through a forest of huge tree ferns and fuchsia trees.

If you are as lucky as we were you could wake up to a most beautiful sunrise and like us you would probably take innumberable photos - nature at her best.

We loved the experience and would certainly recommend at stay here.

If you are after beautiful solitude, then head for Curio Bay. If you want an excellent lodge type studio with all facilities, then head for this Boutique accommodation. The views were stunning, the location fantastic. Very close to the Petrified Forest, beaches with Sea Lions and Yellow-Eyed penguins, and Blue penguins nesting under the lodge! Just be aware that food is 5 miles away and opening hours are not guaranteed. But we booked and the meal (and breakfast next day) was excellent. Why didn't we book in here for more nights?

During our 16 days trip in NZ i think that is the most beautiful view we had! Stunning accommodation along the beach without cell phone coverage and TV. We planned initially to stay only 1 night at Curio Bay but when we discover the place we stayed 1 extra night. The studio is very well equipped and there are plenty of things to do around : walk on the beach, petrified forest, yellow eyed pengouins... Only 1 thing, make sure you have a little food to cook at the studio. There is only 1 nice coffee 10 minutes away and a terrible food truck to avoid !

My wife and I stayed here for one night. Given that the rooms were full, we took the 3 bedroom cottage which would be perfect for a family with kids, or a group of friends. Two bedrooms, with windows onto the beach, had queen beds, and the third bedroom had two bunk beds. There was a fully equipped kitchen, a sitting room with a wood burning fireplace which we needed that night and again in the morning. Wood and coal is provided. There a plenty of games and books provided. This is a perfect get-a-way in Curio Bay, which is spectacularly beautiful. As others have said, it's a short walk or a minute drive to the parking area to see 1) the petrified forest and 2) which is were the yellow eyed penguins come ashore in the evenings. There is no internet, radio, tv or phone which is another good reason to stay in Curio Bay. The cottage is rustic, perfectly clean and has 1 1/2 baths.
