I phoned up to stay here in Feb 2009. It had been raining in Dunedin and decided to go on the Southern Scenic Route. Curio Bay has the petrified forest, yellow-eyed penguins and dolphins. So this place seemed good as it is close to all of these.
I had no idea really what to expect other than paying $150 for one night (reasonably expensive for one person).
I turned up and was given a warm greeting even though there was a treffic wind howling. The room is amazing. The house is a self-build with the family in the main part of the builkding and you next door. Firstly there is a floor to ceiling view out onto the golden sandy beach of Curio Bay. For me this was obscured by the wind and rain, but have seen photos on better days and it looks good. The bed is huge, handmade from drift wood with a wonderful mattress. The bathroom is indulgence and the rest of the room is clean, with cooking facilities, magazines, local information and a dinning table.
For me the family invited me in to join them for a BBQ and was made to feel like one of the family. So for me this was a memorable experience and one I shall not forget in a hurry.
So if you have the money (share backpacker room is $23) then I recommend this place very highly.More
