“Highway into the Mountains”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

This cable car ride is not cheap but it is spectacular and is a way of allowing access to people not physically capable of walking into the really high mountains. It is possilble to take a one way ride if you are going deep into the high mountains of the Pico's de Europa but most people will be just happy to have been whisked up to 1800 metres above sea level in a 5 minute ride. The views are amazing and you can walk back down to Espinama on a land rover track. Its even posible to walk on another land rover track up to the Refugi at Aliva for lunch in the high season. If you take either of these walking options go properly equipped for the mountains and make sure you tell some-one where you are going.

“Be patient”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

It's a good system, but it's necessarily slow. Be patient. The one very annoying aspect is some people's habit of pushing in. The really annoys a Brit. Once you have you number in the queue (only called in Spanish in batches of 40, so pay attention!) there's a bar and cafe to relax around as well as grassy areas for the little darlings to run about on.

“Must do in the Picos de Europa!”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

16euros per adult for the 4 minute cable car ride to the top. If you like views, this is something you must do. I'm afraid of heights but I could suck it up for the short trip and the rewarding views. Once up top you can hike, wander, as much as you want. It was beautiful to see the mountains with snow and the green valleys below. Definitely a highlight.

“Excellent, but remember a couple of things”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

It is a very good ride up and an excellent view up there. But remember a couple of things. Reach early as lines tend to be long. In case you have a long time, you can always go had a meal either in the cafeteria there on in the town of Espinama and come back or do a picnic in one the benches there.

Most importantly, the moment you reach there take a number for returning back. The number for the returning ride is not the same as the ride up. Do this, else you will have to wait up to an hour after seeing the view.

“Avoid the queues”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

The drive to Fuente De was breathtaking and the views from the top of the mountain were mesmerising but the queuing for the cable car was a right royal pain. Unfortunately we arrived at the same time as several coaches of French and Spanish teenagers, who were totally unable to stand still. They indulged in quite a bit of pushing and shoving and on the fairly steep slope up to the wheel house, that was potentially dangerous.

Although the journey up takes only about five minutes, the number of people queueing meant we had to wait for over an hour; then twenty people at a time were shoved into the car. €16 was the cost of the return ticket, which was a bit pricey but was forgiven when it was possible to see the spectacular vistas. In fact the views made it all worthwhile.

There is a viewing platform, with an open grid base, which extends over the edge of the cliff, for those without vertigo. There is a restaurant and small gift shop and a comprehensive information board describing all the different birds you could see.

All in all, go for the views and scenery but to avoid the queues aim for very early or lunchtime. There were no queues to go up, when we came down but we had had to queue again at the top. A better queueing system would have helped, perhaps with timed tickets or something.
