“Fantastic Family Adventure”

Our families would like to take the opportunity to thank Mal and the crew at Villa Marguerita and Gilligan’s for their outstanding hospitality. Our families had a fantastic time at both locations.
Arnold & Marilyn were of great assistance and made our stay enjoyable knowing they could organize our day to day activities.

Thank you Arnold & Marilyn for organizing the Lechon, which was a great experience for all involved. We all have wonderful memories of Port Barton, with the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful scenery.
The kids still talk about Moi-Moi and Titi Moi-Moi, what a great experience. Everyday seemed like an adventure.

Thank you also to Estrella and Roger at Gilligan’s for their hospitality, and to our cooking needs.
Thank you Marilyn for organizing our food for Gilligan’s.

We would also like to thank Asil (Captain) for taking us out fishing at night. Wow, we didn’t think we were going to land that 9kg Mackerel on a hand line. Now that was an experience in itself.
Thank you Asil for the Island Hopping trip. Our families loved the snorkeling, and you also cooked a great lunch to be enjoyed on the beach, couldn’t ask for more.

Thank you Abner for getting us there and back from Puerto Princesa, he sure knows his off road expertise.

The staff at both Villa Marguerita and Gilligan’s tended to our needs and also provided us with the mindful space and privacy.

Both families hope to have the opportunity to experience this wonderful place again in the future.

“Best Vacation EVER!”
Reviewed 18 March 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Villa Marguerita is the most amazing place thanks to the most helpful and friendly staff ever. My group included myself, my mom, dad, brother, husband, father-in-law and brother-in-law and every single one of us had a wonderful time.

I have rented many private homes for various vacations and Mal (the owner) is the most helpful owner I have ever worked with. He answered all of my emails within 24 hours and always did whatever he could to help the planning process. This made it so much easier once we got to Palawan.

The driver, Kuya Abner, sure does know his way around the crazy unpaved roads to Port Barton. He had absolutely no trouble maneuvering the van over some sketchy dirt roads. He is also quite the entertainer when in come to billiards and also has some impressive dance moves :)

Kuya Arnold is the best host and guide for whatever you may need. He seems to be a wealth of information. He has the friendliest and most outgoing personality. His wife, Ate Marilyn is by far the best cook on the island. We made the mistake of trying a few other restaurants and came to the conclusion that her cooking was always better. My mom especially loved being able to buy fresh seafood then Ate Marilyn would transform it into a gourmet meal.

Asher, the resident boatman, is pretty quiet but super witty if you get him going. He always got us out to the best snorkeling spots before it got "crowed" with other tourist and is a pretty good cook as well. The man knows his way around an island grill.

As for Tita Eva, I absolutely love her. She is basically your auntie that make sure you aren't ever hungry, thirsty, or whatever. She's the best!

After a few days everyone felt like family. A few times, my family including the staff, were able to all sit together at the long table and eat dinner together family style. Those were my favorite meals of all. Afterwards we would start playing pool or just sit around and talk.

My husband and brother-in-law especially loved playing pool with Arnold, Abner, Asher, Tita Eva's son, and whoever else showed up. They were introduced to the Filipino drinking concept of "tagay" and enjoyed every minute of it.

There were also so many activities to do. Snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving, island hopping, playing random yard games, reading, exploring the town, or my favorite, watching Aaron play with his friends in the yard or just entertaining his baby brother Liam. Port Barton is so peaceful and beautiful that anything you do is enjoyable.

This was the best vacation ever and we are already talking about when we can come back.

“We loved it - lots of fun.”
Reviewed 3 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

person found this review helpful

We stayed here for 10 days in early Aug 2014 and it was great. Exactly the sort of holiday we were seeking for ourselves and our two young boys (aged 6 and 3).

The whole experience is much more like being part of the family and living in the village rather than being a 'guest' within a resort.

Marilyn and Arnold were excellent hosts and the staff were wonderful, and a lot of fun too. The driver to and from the Airport was also excellent, be aware that the last 20 kms into Port Barton is mostly a bumpy dirt track. That said, the drive through the jungle is spectacular and I would recommend you time your arrive so you can see it in daylight. Give yourself 3 hours + for the drive from the Airport to Port Baron.

I would recommend arranging for the air con transport option - the driver was great, very safe and sensible. You can get a Jeepney for cheaper, but it can take up to 7 hours, is not air conditioned and no where near as comfortable.

We also got lucky with the weather - despite being rainy season we had perfect weather during our stay there - warm, sunny and clear skies. It only rained twice for a couple of hours on the last two days of our stay.

What we Loved:

The Villa, location and views.
The gorgeous sunsets we saw each and every night over dinner.
Swimming in the bay and playing on the kayaks with the kids.
Our children spent many hours playing with the local kids on the lawn in front of the Villa and in the tree house.
The bats and lizards in the villa that came to visit us each night - the boys were most delighted with this.
Island hopping and snorkelling over the reef and visiting other islands with Acer the boatman.
The peace and relaxation that comes with hours of no power or internet.
Talking with Apple and the other staff and swapping stories.
Having days doing 'nothing at all' and just relaxing.

We had an awesome time and was just what we wanted, but this place isn't going to suit everyone - Here's what you should consider:

Port Barton is a real live village with rosters, chickens, cats, dogs, bugs and humans, so it can occasionally be noisy at night - if that sort of thing bothers you I would suggest you bring some ear plugs, consider booking Gilligans instead (which is just gorgeous and very quiet) or try the Hyatt (somewhere else entirely).

You will share the accommodation with some of the locals - not people, but lizards, bats and insects and other occasional wildlife visitor. We liked this - the boys were most pleased about the 'house' bats, but if this freaks you out then this place is not for you.

There is no refrigeration in the villa, although you can put your own supplies in the cold storage at the dining / bar area.

You are a long way from Medical care. If you think you are going to need urgent or complex medical assistance when travelling I would reconsider Port Barton as a destination.

Bring plenty of cash - there are no ATMs, banks and very few places accept credit cards. You can change USD at the local money exchange though.

If you are a non-luxury seeking, anxiety free sort of traveller you are likely to appreciate and enjoy the remote, rural, relaxed, friendly atmosphere and natural beauty of the location.

Port Barton is still largely unspoiled, pleasantly unsophisticated and slightly primitive, and that’s exactly what makes it an attractive destination.

There is no electricity, except from 6:00pm till midnight. There are no doctors or hospitals. There are no five star hotels. Internet access is limited.

In other words - perfect! :)

Thanks for your review. Reviews such as this really tell it like it is. Port Barton vacations aren't sterile 'Hotel' like vacations. You'll see life in the real world of a small village. Our staff are terrific and enjoy caring for our guests as you have seen. As for your boys having a good time, well that's what really makes us happy; seeing children enjoying themselves and making friends. If you ever enjoyed a vacation as a child and can remember those special friendship gained on holidays, you'll know what I mean. Yes it's around 33 kilometres to the nearest hospital in Roxas, but we do have a health centre in Port Barton with a very experienced registered nurse and midwife. Earlier this year the Port Barton nurse assisted me with a few stitches after a little accident. There's no charge to see the nurse but if you can afford to pay for medicines or aneasthetic supplied, then it's the right thing to make a donation to help keep the centre running helping the local people. Thanks for staying with us. Filipinos love Aussies.

“Absolute pleasure”
Reviewed 10 June 2014 for a stay in May 2014

The place is great! The staff considers us "family" rather than guests....my children had plenty of nice stories and smiles to talk about as we come home.

It was indeed a pleasure to deal with Malcolm. Your staff are enjoyable to talk to, very accomodating. We've asked for some coconut and they gave us plenty of it as well as mango, fresh fish and shells. They are very courteous, especially Eser who took us to the neighboring Islands, even to the far flung falls that is a bit challenging to reach by foot. Sorry that I didnt share the vigor that your staff possess in walking such a distance --- but indeed, it was absolute fun!

We will definitely come back next summer. If I have a comment, maybe its the pictures in the websites, Malcolm, I think your place is far more beautiful than the pictures being shown to travellers and Mel, I was pleasantly surprised for the free beers! thank you so much.

“Great stay in Port Barton at Villa Marguerita and Gilligan's Hideout- LOVED IT!”
Reviewed 15 March 2014 for a stay in February 2014

WE just returned from a 3 week trip to The Philippines and stayed for one whole week in Port Barton with these wonderful folks at this great spot. Had the whole house and bar area an property to ourselves which was GREAT for us on our honeymoon. After a week of prepared food at a resort I definitely enjoyed being able to cook for myself and they got all the products I had requested before we showed up. We thought it was priceless to see the expression on all of their faces on the first day when 6'4" Americano Mikey pretty much immediately started in with the slicing and dicing for a good marinade while my wife stood by watching- they were puzzled (but I pride myself on my chef's skills!) They'll fire up the charcoal for you anytime you want, have a very nice kitchen in the bar area to use and will set you up for cooking in the house as well.

Mariliyn and Arnold and Apple and Asir (sorry if I mispelled anything) are very gracious hosts and tour guides and took us to see some wonderful sights and WOW! snorkeling- the reef right there in the bay is simply amazing- 5 minute boat ride to the best snorkeling I have ever seen (and I have snorkeled in the Caribbean, Hawaii and the marine parks of Thailand- this blew all of those away) and there are multiple dive shops nearby for divers- I have to imagine it's spectacular.

Definitely book a couple nights at Gilligan's as well- what a beautiful and quiet spot! So glad we got to stay there a couple nights. Only reason I didn't book all nights there is I didn't want to be a 20 minute boat ride away from bottled water if you know what I mean. But, when we visit again I will probably stay at Gilligan's for a couple more nights- what a spot! And OMG shell collecting on the beaches of Palawan!

My wife is 100% Filipina but moved to The States at 10yrs, old. We both really enjoyed their homemade Pancit, Lumpia (order those a bit in advance- tough to get all the ingredients in the tiny town of Port Barton). And we loved sharing the kitchen with the ladies on the last night as we all contributed to a big meal and sat in the great outdoor bar with the two families and ourselves enjoying a great feast!

So, for an authentic, non-resort type stay in Port Barton this IS the spot! As their brochure says, if the occasional beetle or bug bothers you or Swifts flying through your room in the morning to eat mosquitoes or the occasional bat in your belfry bothers you book a room at The Hyatt ('cause YOU are a PANSY! -their brochure doesn't say that part I DO!).

“Paradise!!”
Reviewed 29 October 2013 for a stay in February 2013

My family of four (myself, my husband, and our two kids) plus two friends of mine traveled to Port Barton together and we had an amazing week. We spent 2 nights at Gilligan's too and both places were amazing! The staff were all friendly and helpful and we thought the food was delicious. There was ice cold beer always available and we enjoyed a BBQ on the beach one day on our island hopping/snorkeling tour (that was included).

All in all it was an extremely relaxing and fun holiday and we would whole-heartedly recommend both vacation homes!!

Thanks Amanda. I don't think I wrote to thank you for staying with us, but here's a good opportunity. My staff said you were a lovely family. I took my parents and children to Gilligans for 2 weeks last year and it was a special time for us. It's a very basic destination with a simple house, but the simplicity seems to allow families to bond and be a family. My mother bonded with her grandchildren and likewise and my 14 year old started to make good conversation instead of being engrossed in video games as he has been for years. For my family also it was an amazing vacation. I appreciate the time you spent in reviewing your time with us in Port Barton. Mal
