“Nice cottage, average hosts”
Reviewed 3 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

Pleasant stay at the Cider Barrel as it is a cosy cottage with a nice view of rolling hills. The pictures don't really show that you actually share a wall with another cottage and are right near the large main farm house and B & B, so you're not very secluded at all. Maggie and her family are not very warm to be honest. It's quite obvious that they don't care what kind of time you have at their place (and actually find you staying a bit of an annoyance) as they seem to just want you in and out so that they make their money. The 4pm check in is quite late and £30 charge for towels I feel is a bit steep. We were also hurried out by our host when checking out - although we had packed our car ready to leave and were obviously already leaving, they insisted on coming to the door to tell us that the cleaner was ready to clean the apartment at 10:30am which we thought was a reasonable check out time as we could not find a time on the website or in our e-mail correspondence. Also one of our party left a sweater in the closet and has received no reply from them after offering to send a cheque to cover the postage of the sweater back to us. It's a nice cottage however due to the unwelcoming nature of the hosts I wouldn't return or recommend this cottage.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay, we appreciate all feedback received from our guests. We are very sorry that you did not feel that we lived up to your expectations as hosts. We aim to give our guests as much attention as possible providing all additional items that we can, we hope the extra crockery, utensils and addition fridge were useful during your stay? Christmas is a time when we feel our guests like to celebrate as a group themselves but we are always there if they have any questions or need any help. This was very fortunate when one of your party got completely lost on a morning run on the day of your departure. Fortunately a farmer some miles away knew Maggie, phoned her and she was able to drop what she was doing and go immediately to collect the guest who was very relieved.
With regards to check in/check out times, 4pm check in and 10am check out are pretty standard, we often accommodate other times by prior arrangement. We will make sure that these times are stated more clearly in the cottages as it is never easy to try and tell someone the times on departure day! We are sorry that you felt that you were rushed. We now realise that you were getting stressed as one of your party had taken a wrong turn running and got lost. Fortunately Maggie was able to resolve the situation.
The £30 charge for towel hire was clearly stated in our email correspondence prior to booking. We feel that this is a fair charge for hire of 6 sets of towels; we do however waive this fee for overseas visitors.
Regarding the lost sweater, we had already arranged return of the item before your review was posted. The sweater should now be with its owner.
Our website does provide a clearer description of the cottage; location, farm description, terms and conditions etc but will endeavour to make it clearer in the description on the “Holiday Lettings” website for future guests.
Once again thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that your stay did not live up to expectations.
