Alishan house is located at a strategic location in the Alishan park. Most trails and sights are within walking distance. There are two buildings: historical and modern. The historical wooden building sits on a hill and has a rustic look to it. The rooms are older but cheaper. The modern building is only a couple of years old so the rooms are substantially newer. We stayed in the modern building. While the rooms are newer, the room that we stayed in had a spoilt light switch and it looked like it needs a bit of sprucing up. Both buildings are connected via a roof garden.

As others have mentioned, they provide frequent shuttle service to and fro the alishan car park / service station where you can buy souvenirs, eat at a restaurant and buy snacks at the 7-11.

They also give you the option of purchasing a sunrise train ticket straight from the reception, which saves you from queueing at the train station. Regardless, the whole watch sunrise at chushan will be a messy and hectic affair with lots of tourists rushing for the train. When you reach chushan, you might see the sunrise depending on the weather. When I was there, it was too misty to see the sunrise so I practically wasted all that trouble. You can't tell nature what to do, period.

The part that, for lack of a better word, sucked was the breakfast restaurant on the first floor. Service was bad, crowd control was bad, food was subpar--except for the omelette chef which was superb (long queue though)--trays were frequently empty and did I already say service was bad? The service was bad. They really need to hire better people at the restaurant. When a lot of things are good, a bad sticks out like a sore thumb.

We did stay there 1 night this January. I especially enjoyed the large beds and the super comfy pillows. They have heating in the room, which makes a stay in winter really pleasant. The old part of the hotel, where all those presidents and foreign VIP guests used to stay, looks a bit dark and old. Not that attractive, unless you are a history buff. During spring you can reach for the cherry blossoms from your room window. We didn't see any. Few weeks too early. If you drive yourself you can't drive to the hotel, but you have to leave the car in the car park near the train station and then take one of those blue park shuttle buses. Watch out for those buses when walking on the street, some drivers drive like maniacs.

Room Tip: Stay in the new part of the hotel if you look for the comfort, stay in the old part if you want to stay where presidents stayed.

this hotel is well serviced and good value for money. The food was outstanding - great choice and excellent quality. The breakfast buffet was huge. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The location was great with good views. If you are going to see the sunrise I would probably just stay at the hotel - the train ride to "the spot" is crowded and once there you are surrounded by millions of other pushy loud people and lots of local hawkers - would have been better to stay at the hotel where the views were just as good and it is a lot more peaceful and serene.

This house have a long history more than hundred years. The location of this house is quite near the train station Alishan. And, it locate next with the path for hiking.

The most important point is the view of the room is very nice. We can see the sunset in the room.

The service of the hotel is quite good. They all stand in front of the hotel to say goodbye when we leave the hotel.

Comfortable room. We were warm enough in November without having to switch on the electric fire. The night we dined, there was a show on so the restaurant was packed. I think this might be why some of the dishes were not as hot as we would have liked. Overall the food was OK but could have been better. The staff were very pleasant and always greeted us with smiles and went out of their way to be helpful. I liked the staff uniforms and there were some beautiful floral displays in the lobby.
