One of the issues we came across while travelling Taiwan is to get cheap 'no frills' accomodation. The backpacker infrastructure isn't completely developed yet and this is exactly what Charlie (English speaking) and his wife Vicky (Chinese speaking) are providing for. We stayed at both their guesthouses: one walking distance from the train station and the other just across the bridge from the main area in the Anping district. Staying at both is a good way of seeing and staying in both main parts of Taitung: downtown and the Anping area. Both had decent beds, funky tiger-print duvets, a kitchen, good shower, free wifi and a common area with loads of books.
These very friendly owners are still working on both places as they've only opened this year (2013) so still a few things to improve, but if you're looking for a low-cost place to stay in a good location this is your place. You even get a free beer voucher for a cool bar (Tin Pan Alley) close to the station-branch!More
