“Lovely place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2012

We recently stayed here for one night en route from the Bergerac area to the Loire Valley.

It's a lovely little location and the owners, Robert and Florence have restored the place beautifully. We stayed in the stables / outbuilding at the back which has been beautifully modernised. Our room was huge with lovely big beams and a view over the pool. There's a communal lounge area below, which we had sole use off as the only guests that night, which was also nice

Dinner was lovely.I have a wheat intolerance and Florence had baked me an almond cake for desert with no wheat. This was a lovely little touch (and if you read this, a big thank you). It was delicious.

Robert and Florence are charming hosts and we felt very welcome in their beautiful home.

I recently stayed at the Chateau de Lavaud hotel in Montbron for four nights. The hotel is situated just to the south of Montbron with beautiful views of the weir on the Tardoire river.
The owners, Robert and Florence, are absolutely charming and warmly welcomed me to their glorious chateau.
My large room was at the front overlooking the Tardoire and I slept extremely well in the comfy double bed with complete peace and solitude from the extensive surrounding grounds. State of the art ensuite bathroom with fabulous walk-in shower or deep bath, if preferred.
A traditional French breakfast of orange juice, coffee, croissants etc.. is served each morning in the dining room and is relaxed and informal.
A truly lovely stay and I hope to return during the summer as I continue my house hunting in the region.

Room Tip: 'the views from rooms at the front are magical, with the weir and river Tardoire just a stone...

A wonderful place : relaxing, things to do, lovely countryside, and top notch hosts in Florence and Robert. Breakfast on the terrace in the morning was the perfect start to the day. We used the bicycles for an afternoon of touring which was a good way to get out and about. But staying by the pool was also a nice option. The chateau and its surroundings are picture postcard. We had our little girl with us, who really loved it too. We look forward to going back soon.

This stay was one of a kind, so very nice and the owners are the most kindest, helpful and nice people we meet in France!
The room was cosy decorated, and we really felt at home, not as on a hotel.
Breakfast - all homemade by the owner - when the weather is fine can be eaten outside by the pool - there was nothing to complain on at all!!
We stayed only for two nights, but we do hope that we will have the possibility to come back again sometime.
The Italian restaurant in Montbron,( closest town only a few minutes by car) that we was recommended was much better than the first look told us. It was very nice to sitt out in the garden on the backside.
If you want a calm and nice place in the countryside go here!

One cannot compare directly this wonderful example of a homely little chateau with the great hotels of the world - it is an entirely different experience. Yet, having spent some 30 years travelling and working around the world, we have no hesitation in placing Chateau de Lavaud at the top of its category. Firstly, the setting is "La France Profonde" at its best - unspoiled, quiet, friendly and unhurried - yet with lots to explore. Secondly, the Chateau has been beautifully restored without losing its essence as a family home. Thirdly, Robert and Florence are warm, efficient and engaging hosts. Florence provided an outstanding dinner from local produce, supplemented by Robert's well-chosen local wines (24 hours notice if you wish to dine in). We particularly enjoyed browsing through Robert's extensive - and somewhat intellectually serious - library. The pool is lovely and our room was spacious, homely, yet state of the art where appropriate. The Chateau sits in extensive grounds of what could be termed "studied wildness", bordering a bucolic river setting and looking across the valley towards ancient Montbron. We enjoyed an unhurried day trip to the Medoc and the coast around Ile de Re is within striking distance. If you seek quiet indulgence and genuine decompression, this is the place - about 40 minutes from Limoges airport where hire cars are quickly arranged.

I can't really add to the other excellent reviews for Chateau de Lavaud but I promised Mme Manderscheid I would write one so here it is! The Chateau really is a gorgeous retreat in a beautiful part of France. The rooms, the welcome and the breakfast were all excellent. There is no dinner option but the staff at the Italian restaurant in the village (15 minutes on foot) were lovely and the food was perfectly acceptable. I'm happy to say that the welcome also extended to our children, which is not always the case in places as "haut de gamme" as this one and our son's parting words were, "Why do we have to leave?". I think we all felt the same way.

We can only endorse the very positive feedback already showing in the reviews. Charming and helpful hosts, who booked dinner for us in two lovely places; spacious rooms, furnished with great style; lovely pool; delicious breakfast, served on a sundrenched terracy by the pool; peaceful location. This was our first stay in B&Bs rather than hotels, and I think we started at the top of the range!
