“Fantastic Family Resort on a Great Beach”
Reviewed 4 April 2013

Our family of five (3 boys, 4, 6 and 8) stayed at The Sunwing Resort for two weeks in November and absolutely loved it!! The pools and waterslides kept our three boys very entertained and the beachfront location was perfect......we love Kamala Beach...much quieter and cleaner than Patong. We ate most of our meals (other than breakfast) at the cafes along Kamala Beach (with the waves lapping on our feet)... all at a cost of around $50AU for the five of us!! (None of us got sick!!) Kamala Beach is an easy Tuk Tuk ride to Patong ($10 each way) and the kids loved the entertaining ride...watching the crazy scooter riders!!! The weather was perfect in November and when the afternoon storms rolled in (for about an hr) the whole family would go and have an hr long massage on the beach under cover for $10 each! We could not understand why this hotel isn't recommended as one of the top family resorts for those with young children...this will be a regular holiday destination for us! We stayed in one of the family rooms where the kids beds were in the main living area and we had a separate bedroom. It was very spacious and had a great view over the pools towards the beach. The decor is very simple and modern so if you are after a "Thai" experience this is not the resort for you! The Thai people are very friendly (they loved our three boys who are very blonde!) and we did not once feel like we, or our possessions, were at risk. I would thoroughly recommend this resort to anyone looking for an affordable family holiday where you can do as little or as much as you like......much better than Fiji, where we have been twice! Shop around as many agents have 1/2 price accommodation deals with breakfast!

Room Tip: Request a room that faces the pool

The hotel is a typical family resort. If you are looking for a save and enjoyable environment where your kids can play in the (multiple) pools this is the right place. The beach is very close, too, and there are several good restaurants just outside the hotel. For snorkeling it makes sense to take a taxi to the next beach as the water there is much better with plenty of fish close to the shore. The rooms are very spacious and the staff was friendly and helpful all the time.

This resort is everything you want - fantastic location, great facilities, wonderful hotel staff, nice food and great value.

It is a family resort though so I would probably go elsewhere if you don't have kids under maybe 14. My kids are 11, 8 and 8 and they loved it. The pools are unbelievable and the kids loved the slides, they also liked the shows/entertainment and we found the staff just love the kids.

The location is probably the highlight for this hotel as it is right on Kamala Beach so you have easy access to the beach, restaurants, markets, massages, etc and a short walk to the main shopping street of Kamala. We also found the area very safe as it is well lite at night and plenty of people around until 11pm or so if you venture out.

Many reviews comment that the resort caters for Scandanavians. It is a Scandanavian owned resort and therefore many of them (and Russians) stay there. We Aussies were badly outnumbered but I wouldn't say it is catered for any particular nationality. The shows at night were in english, I heard the water aerobics being done in english and all the staff are Thai who speak english. We did find that the european guests guests were quite rude but that is no reflection on the resort. We didn't have a problem with this issue at all.

The hotel staff were also excellent, right from the reception staff to the hotel room maids to the bar staff and massage ladies. They were all professional, friendly and very helpful.

The hotel is about 20 minutes from Patong - 400bt each way by tuk tuk or the hotel has a shuttle bus that runs at set times each night for 150bt return. Massages are the same price everywhere - 300bt (AUS$10) per hour. Shopping in Kamala is good but a lot more variety wille found in Patong.

We had an absolutely great time and will definitely return to this resort if we go back to Thailand.

Room Tip: Rooms directly above the restaurant get the noise from the nightly entertainment which happens in th...

We recently stayed 9 days at this is a terrible hotel with bad service and poor quality of food! If you want to enjoy the best of Thailand stay away form this hotel. 5 av 7 was getting sick because of the food at this hotel. When we tried to sort this out with the hotel management, they didn`t beliwe us and was rud! Never ever has we experienced so bad service from a hotel and especilly not in Thailand.

Thailand is full of fantastic hotels why ruin your holliday by choosing somthing so bad. We ended ut checing out to JW Mariott to rescue the rest of the vacation.

Room Tip: Choose a happy baby room if you anyway choose this terrible hotel. These rooms have direct access to...

We stayed for a week at this resort. It was perfect. Our kids 3, 5, and 9 loved it. The pools were Great. They had many pools to choose from. The hotel was pretty busy but because there were plenty of pools to choose from it didn't seem crowded. They had 3 slides, a baby slide, a smaller slide for toddlers, and a larger slide for the older children. I didn't like that they closed at 6 pm. The shows and programs for the children were wonderful. The kids wouldn't miss a family show for anything. The programs for the older children were a bit of a disappointment my daughter would go and no one else would show. The Breakfast was Great! It had many items to choose from and everything we ate was great. The lunch was good as well and the kids ate free if the adults ate. The Beach was probably the best beach we saw on Phuket. It was less crowded and the kids had a great time playing on the beach. There is plenty of shopping and places to eat around the Beach. The Fantasy show is right next to the resort as well. Like most things for tourist it is a bit of a tourist trap. The show was great and we really did like looking through all the shops. They also had a little Zoo type place with white tigers that our children loved. The only thing I didn't like about the resort was that they didn't really know of many good tours for families. I would highly recommend staying around Kamala for tours because the ride anywhere else was long and the kids hated the long packed ride to our destination. Our room was large enough for us and comfortable. I didn't like that we had to pay for internet in our rooms but really we spent most of our time outside of our room. It is a resort designed for Scandinavian families but we felt very welcomed and everyone was very nice. It is a great kid friendly resort and we would highly recommend it to families.

We had a 4 night stay at the Sunwing resort on Kamala Beach.

The best part of this hotel is the location, right on Kamala Beach which is a great location.

The unfortunate part of this hotel is it caters purely to the Scandanavian market, kids shows, entertainment, even a water fitness class was spoken in Swedish ( I think !! ) so my son was not even interested in participating in anything as he said he didn't understand what they were saying.

We stayed in a royal family suite which had direct access to one of the 7 pools, which was good, but I think the pool areas need an update, the garden areas in and around the pools need attention and a few maintenance issues as well.

Upon check we arrived at 3.00pm, the check in time advertised, but we had to wait in the lobby until 3.40pm till our room was ready, clearly unacceptable and poor planning, when entering our room we were greeted with a swarm of mosquitoes, luckily the maid was nearby and we obtained some spray to try to quell the onslaught, not much luck but we swatted most of them by hand.

It's a great spot Kamala Beach and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a relaxing break, but if you speak English try somewhere else to stay.

We stayed here for a 2 week vacation with our 2 kids (2,4 years old). It is a pretty ok hotel but based on all the good reviews we read on Tripadvisor before we expected more.

We had a Room with direct access to the pool which was nice if not for so many guests that obviously dont know anything about etiquette and just walked by all the time AND there is NO!! walkway!! So we found that rather disturbing we have to say.

Another things was that everywhere!! in the resort were obviously broken swimtoys laying around. Nobody picked them ever up and threw them away.

We only booked breakfast at the hotel which was pretty ok but we tried once dinner and that was pretty horrific and expansive. All the samll restaurants along the beach were a lot better and cheaper!

However it is great place to go with kids. With a big Playground, The Lollo & Bernie Land with lots of activities and MIni-Disco. The kids loved it!

To sum things up: we are not going to return here. It was not all that bad but it was just not good enough to return.
