Sunwing Kamala Beach

Chose to stay a couple of nights at the Sunwing to test it out.

Overall our experience was positive especially after being bumped up to the baby suites.

We chose this hotel due to the waterslides and proximity to the beach. It certainly met that criteria. The only issue I had is the pools were like spas so not refreshing at all. This might be due to it being April and the weather hot, but I haven't experienced it like that before in Thailand. That is the reason why i knocked it down a star and I wouldn't stay here in April again due to the pools.

Breakfast was large and ample and there were plenty of variety for adults and kids alike.

Perhaps one gripe is the drinks at the Sunwing are considerably more expensive than the sister hotel next door. I guess the hotel thinks it must have a captive market with parents of young children.

Overall a positive stay, Kamala is lovely but quite quiet. Which is great if you like that, but not for us.

We stayed at Sunwing Resort recently for three nights in one of their Beach Bungalow Rooms whilst we awaited to get into Sunprime , we are a couple with no kids and found the resort very comfortable with enough space to find room just for yourselves . With seven pools you can always find a quieter pool to relax by especially those away from the water slide pools.
The room was spacious and the view was amazing from the balcony overlooking the beach , breakfasts were also good with a lot of choice.
The Beauty of both Sunwing and Sunprime is the proximity to the beach and the wonderful beach restaurants we would recommend Smile , Sands Beach Club and for something a bit different and a bit of exercise take a walk to Skyla's where you will enjoy great views from this quaint tree house bar/ restaurant
There is only one criticism and this is really out of the hands of the hotel but is prevelant across Phuket and that is the total rudeness and arrogance of the Russian people who seem to think they own the island and who refuse to line up for food at breakfast just forcing their way to the front of the queue and this behaviour continues for all activities they choose to participate in , they often reserve sun beds on mass even though it clearly states that this is against hotel policy
Even with this little hiccup we really enjoyed our stay at Sunwing .

Room Tip: Try to get a beach Bungalow room much quieter but you are not too far away from pools etc

I chose this hotel because of its positive reviews, family orientation and beach front location. I was not disappointed. There was 7 of us in the party, two grandparents, three adults and two children aged 9 and 1. travelling in January 2014. The hotel is extremely clean, the staff are very attentive and friendly. Nothing is to much trouble. Everything you need is on site if you didn't want to venture to far. The room was really modern and spacious, huge beds that were lovely to sleep on, settee that doubled up as a bed, TV, phone, safe, large fridge, microwave cutlery and crockery all provided. Bathroom with walk-in shower with a double head. Bedding and towels changed daily, fresh bottled water left in the fridge every day along with tea and coffee facilities. The lime Bar also doubles up as the restaurant, food and drinks are lovely and plentiful. There are 7 pools and plenty of sunbeds. We had a pool to ourselves virtually for the first week. There is a safe kids play area. Evening entertainment is good, not brilliant but ok for the little ones and adults for those evenings where you just want to chill. If you want to chill there are loads of cushioned areas to relax and screen showing cartoons and films for children. The hotel even provides good quality pushchairs for your little ones so you don't need to take your own. These are really clean to. There are children around this hotel as it is set up for families, however I can't stress enough how well behaved they all were, there wasn't any running around or screaming or creating, and I didn't see any dropping food around in the restaurant. The beach is full of amazing food outlets, souvenir stalls and massage beds. The Pond is by far the very best place to eat and is always busy so book in advance if you can otherwise there may be a wait for a table. The other eateries are good and you wont be disappointed. Moo massage is the best to, she has a fantastic team who work extremely hard you won't be disappointed there. Best place to exchange money was the little pharmacy just down from The Pond restaurant. Although the hotel does offer the service just slightly less exchange rate. The hotel also has a laundry, little shop, taxi and tuk tuks right outside. We went to Patong, Cata and Caron, all excellent. The trips organised through Henry the Thompson rep are excellent and extremely good value for money, we did the History tour, Phi Phi island and another. The hotel is lit up at night with lots of pretty lights and more than anything is extremely safe for children. Kamala has plenty to see and do with lots of restaurants, bars, shops, and supermarkets. I absolutely 100% would recommend this hotel and this resort. The local people are so friendly and really appreciate you being there. I would love to go back and would definitely stay at this hotel

We arrived at the Sunwing resort after a week spent at the Sofitel resort in Krabi (which was incredible) We were in Thailand with a group of 23 and spent the second week in Phuket. We arrived at Sunwing and were greeted by the reception which was nice enough, we were then shown to our rooms which were big and spacious and clean.

The main point to make is that this is a resort centered around families with children. Out of the 23 of us the youngest was eleven years old so we didn't see the benefit of the children's shows, slides, activities etc.

The food at the hotel is OK although we chose to eat out every night and had a couple of the lunches from the take out menu... we were full board but did not take advantage of this as we much preferred eating out an about.

However, my review is mainly positive, aside from the childrens pools there are 3 pools which are much more quiet and cater for adults. The hotel provides a shack where you can get massages for around 400 Baht and which are very good. the resort also backs onto Kamala beach which means that you can wander up and down looking at the market stalls, getting traditional thai and seafood and finding somewhere to drink.

I've got to give a special mention to the small beach bar outside of the resort which is called Spice Bar...we spent almost every night here and had a great time with the people who ran it.. there was a great selection of cocktails, spiritis and the beers were always ice cold. Our favourite part of the holiday.

The hotel is ideally located to travel around Phuket and to see the sights/ explore.

I would recommend:

- Muay Thai Boxing at the Sewit stadium in Chalong (1600 Baht return by taxi and 1500 baht per ticket) authentic thai boxing which is worth the money if you are interested in the sport. Local boxing in Patong is much more foreigner oriented.

- Elephant trekking at the Kok Chang safari park. We took some time checking reviews for the place where the elephants are treated well and for the best view points...definitely did not disappoint. (We did go to the elephant camp in Kamala as the cabbie insisted but we refused after seeing the shoddy surroundings and chained up Elephants)

- Koh Phi Phi - me and my girlfriend stayed the night on Phi Phi and absolutely loved it..geared more towards 18-30's at night time so would recommend if you like to party. You can get a ferry back to phuket for 500 baht.

There are also plenty of beaches around the island where you can snorkel and kayak etc

all in all a great place to get your head down after a day exploring the island.

We spent 7 nights at the Sunwing Kamala Beach and loved it! We stayed in a family room which was clean and big enough for 2 adults and 2 children. It also had a fridge and a microwave which we found very useful.

The hotel has several pools and our children (2 and 4) could stand and play in many of the pools. The beach was only a short walk away and also perfect for children to play and swim. The water is not deep and there were no waves. The only negativ point was that you had to pay for your umbrella and beach chair and that the beach can get very very crowded.

We ate mostly at the restaurants directly on the beach and had a fantastic view of the sunset most evenings. We also tried the food at the La Tasca restaurant and had take away food several times. The food is ok but nothing special. The breakfast was also good - the usual choices.

The animation team is doing a great job, its mostly in Swedish but it did not bother our kids, they danced and claped along anyway. Also the mini club play area is great. Well kept and many toys to play with.

All in all we had a perfect stay in the Sunwing and would highly recommend it to other families. For people without kids its certainly not the right hotel!

I spent six days here together with my mother and my two children (3years and 6months). First we got a room on the 2nd floor which was not optimal for us since there was no elevator. But for a resonable price we got upgraded to a Royal family suit with private pool access. This room was much better for us! The room was very well equipped.

The cleaning was poor and when we arrived we found splitter of glass on the floor. The hotel was very noisy with too many babies and children on the same surface. Our room was not soundproof. In the corridore guests put their used plates after room service. Used dipers were put outside the door without any plastic bag! Do I have to say that we saw several rats?

The food was quite good but the restaurant was very noisy.

Good entertainment for kids! Nice pools.

The place is absolutely complete for family vacations. A warning for those without children such as the traveler on the review below. This place's concept is around children. The best thing is that they can do activities without the parents as well, so you can enjoy your beer at the pool with your wife or go to work out as she does a massage. There are so many activities the children end the day completely satisfied and ready to go to bed. Very nice experience !! The difficult part was to pack and leave the resort!!
