“Like their tag goes ~ Where tradition meets nature!”
Reviewed 8 June 2010

This Holiday was to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, we chose Thavorn's after a lot of thought and are truly happy that we did!
Thavorn Beach Village is a huge property laden with beautiful orchid plantations, variety of accommodation styles complete with big pools n a private beach. We'd booked a garden view bungalow for the first couple of days of our stay and then moved to a Poolside villa for our anniversary. Both the rooms were clean and spacious. The bungalow, though a lil smaller, was closer to the beach. It had a front porch with garden chairs to relax in after a swim. The bed was comfortable with clean linen (changed everyday). The bathroom was decent enough with all toiletries provided and refilled. The poolside villa was bigger with 2 queen sized beds and bigger bathroom. It had a great view of the pool with the sea beyond. The loungers provided on the balcony were perfect to relax and watch the sunset or even the rain!
The Beach was beautiful with lots of coral (very good for snorkeling) and an activity centre. They have equipment for various beach activities (snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, beach volleyball etc) for hire at reasonable rates. The timings for high n low tides were put up on the beach which was a plus so that we could plan our ocean swim accordingly. The pools were big and clean and had beautiful landscaping around them. The pool area is well lit even in the evenings n night (upto 2 am) for the ones who fancy a late evening dip.
The breakfast spread was awesome. The restaurants were good in ambiance, though the food was slightly expensive. Room service was good too. Didnt get to use the Spa, but they do have complimentary facilities. As mentioned by other reviewers, there were 2 daily shuttles to patong beach, but we would recommend u hire a car or a bike to get around the island.
The highlight of this place is the staff who provided us with great 'personalised' service right from check in to check out. Everyone was warm, friendly n courteous and ready to help us always. They had decorated our room for our anniversary and my husband's B'day. We would like to give our special thanks to the Asst Manager, Laow, for surprising us with a special fruit basket n wine and a B'day cake. She was extremely helpful and friendly and treated us like family rather than just guests.
Thavorn's has a right blend of nature and hospitality...Definitely a place we would be coming back to!

The hotel was stunning and the room truly beautiful. The room was Ocean View and boasted near perfect views over Patong bay aswell as two double beds and a Jacuzzi on the balcony. I would also add the staff were helpful and able to organise us tours to many of Phuket’s highlights.

My only reservation with the hotel was value. Though we got a great deal on the room we found when we were there the hotel really took advantage of their out of town location and we found ourselves paying a premium for food, drinks and transport. The added cost really wiped out any savings we thought we had made through getting a deal on the room.

All in all I would rate this hotel really well however you really do need to be aware that you will be paying a premium when your there.

Sawasdee krab!
We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Ocean View Villa - stunning views and total peace and quiet! The comments in regards to pricing have all been noted with thanks, and an issue which we will certainly address during the coming months. We have instigated several special offers and bonus values with various international tour operators which hopefully have helped our guests enjoy their stays with us.

Thank you for your comments and for taking the time to post here on Trip Advisor.

Best regards

We stayed in 4 resorts during our holiday from 3 star to 5 star. This resort was not good value for money. I would rate our room (Beach Bungalow) as 2 star at the very most. The plumbing blocked every time the shower was used. The water came out brown from the tap. The bed was so hard I dreamed I was sleeping on the floor. We were visciously attacked by mosquitoes all night. We asked to stay on the beach front (mailed previously) but were rudely told there was none. No attempt was made to offer us a change during our whole stay.

The restaurants were extremely expensive when compared to the Thailand economy. I felt the guests were being ripped off. There were no outside restaurants so you had to pay the price or pay to get into Patong. I dont think the Spa gets much business - it was outrageously priced. Could get it cheaper in Australia.

Our sons stayed in a pool access villa, it was of a better quality but they put us at one end of the resort and them at the other end. We could have been put a lot closer together. We had to walk miles anytime we wanted to go to their room. Staff very unhelpful.

We would never stay here again and if anyone asked us we would tell them to get better value elsewhere. I would say this is a 2 star resort charging 5 star prices.

The worst hotel ever. DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY. ROOM dirty, pipes blocked, toilet dirty, bed dirty and dirty sheets and you could see lots on mattress protector.
%50 of staff rude. Far from patong and 300 bath each way.
Food average, but pool and beach area are good.

I spent days researching hotels on Phuket and wanted one that would provide a unique Thai experience for our children and was away from Patong. We chose Thavorn because of the rooms opening onto the pool - something I couldn't find anywhere else. We have just returned and it was the most beautiful place I have ever been. Our room opened onto a small waterfall and and enourmous pool that was a perfect depth for our 5 and 8 year old children. Frangipani and palms shaded half the pool for some of the day and it was a relief to get out of the sun. There are bridges to swim under and small elephant statues to play in. The pool goes up to the breakfast area so the kids just got in after breakfast while we had coffee and could watch them, then we swam back to our room !! This hotel is just exquisite to look at.
At night we sat in the lovely Old Siam restaurant and watched the sea and the sparkling lights of Patong over the bay. The gardens are gorgeous and well maintained and the staff are friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately we only spent 6 nights here and then moved onto a much larger resort which although sumptuous, had none of the character and beauty of Thavorn.

If you have children who are able to swim - they will never want to leave this place. But then neither did we!!!

My partner--soon to be husband under the new DC law--stayed at the Thavorn in Nackalay Bay for about 10 days in April. It was supposed to be for six, and we were supposed to go to Bangkok for four, but given that our hotel in Bangkok would have been right in the middle of the protest zone, we opted to stay the additional four days at the Thavorn.

The approach to this hotel was actually rather palatial, and we were very impressed by the very natural surroundings--large palms, banana trees, other indigenous plantlife, and beautiful, large orchid gardens. We were nicely greeted by staff and asked to sit in a lounge area, offered delightful fruit drinks, and they then brought the paperwork to us. Our room wasn't quite ready, but the wait was brief while we walked around the lobby, which is open-air with really nice views into the gardens, the lagoon pool, etc. We were then escorted to our room--our luggage was being brought up just behind us--and to our surprise we had to take a funicular (def: a railway up the side of a mountain pulled by a moving cable and having counterbalancing ascending and descending cars), and of course it immediately occurred to us that we would need to use this mode of transportation each time we left and returned to our room(!), although there is a pathway for walking that's open until around dusk. From the Web site, we knew our ocean-view villa would be up on the side of a hill, and we wondered how we would get up and down--now we knew! It was actually rather intriguing and exciting to be at the first hotel we had ever stayed where we needed to use a funicular to go to and from our room! Fun! On our second day, they took one of the cars out of commission for re-furbishing, which made the wait each time a little bit longer. If you go there now, you will likely benefit from our mild inconvenience by sitting in a refurbished car, although the other one is now probably out of commission for the same reason. But they were working on them, which was good, and I must say the staff guys who managed to run the one car they had running were very nice and friendly and really did minimize the waits.

Upon arival at our room we were introduced to the control panel next to the bed that operated all the lights, the TV, AC, etc. The room was large, the view of the bay spectacular, the bathroom more than adequate, with separate shower, tub, and toilet. There was also a walk-thru closet. The furnishings seemd a bit dated but not uncomfortable--until that moment we will never forget: when the staff left and we laid down on the bed. Ugggh! The mattress was unbelievably bad. The first thing that occurred to me was, who stayed in this room before us and didn't have the mattress changed?! The second thing was, why would the hotel invest in developing and maintining beautiful gardens, great restaurants, a nice lagoon pool and all the other amenities (including a veranda for our room with lovely lounge chairs and an outdoor jaccuzi!) and have totally unacceptable mattresses?! I just couldn't fathom it. Not only was the mattress thin and lumpy, but it actually seemed to have iron bars running through it width-wise, which meant you would feel them at every point of your body. We decided to rough it that night and speak to the mangement the next morning, which we did. The manager was very nice and immediately agreed to replace the mattress. Sure enough, the staff came to our room right away with a clearly old, but apparently somewhat thicker mattress, so we went with it. In fact, it certainly was not worlds better, but it was passable, and we stayed on. It was not a great pleasure to come back to our room and lay down on that bed and spend the night, but the price of the room was so reasonable that it was difficult to complain. We didn't complain about a few other things:

When we turned off the bathroom light, the TV sometimes went off. Other times, the TV stayed on but the AC turned off. At one point my husband turned on the shower, which had a flourescent light above it, and received a brief electric shock! At that point we decided using the electric jacuzzi tub filled with water might not be a very good idea, although it was likely fine. Tere's that low confidence level that starts to sink in, and when it's about electricity it makes you think twice.

There was no indoor air conditioned restaurant, although there were, I think, four open-air ones. They seemed very nice, but after a long day in the heat, it's nice to come back to your hotel for a dinner in an air conditioned restaurant. Even in the mornings, the breakfast buffet (which was not bad given a wide selection of western and local fare) would have been nice if it were indoors away from the heat, the mosquitoes (not ubiquitous, but defnitely annoying at times), and the stray cats (which didn't bother me, but might bother those who would prefer not to have cats rubbing up against their legs while they have their breakfast).

We tried to get the hotel to arrange a taxi to pick us up one morning and negotiate a price for us for a full day to tour the coastal beaches of the island. This was one of the taxis they previously summoned for us, but they were "not allowed" to arrange for him to come back the next day to take us touring--even though we had his card and liked him very much. They had to arrange for another taxi. Very strange.

This is not at all complaint about the hotel itself, but potential guests should be aware that the "beach" on which the resort sits is mainly coral and rock, and quite long and beautiful, especially for strolling, but it is almost unavailable for swimming (you would defnitely need good flip-flops or sandals to prevent cuts and bruises). So if you stay here, plan to use their twice-daily shuttles to Patong and go tohe beach there or take a taxi to one of the even more beautiful beaches up and down the coast (we found that Kata Beach made for a really nice day--less honky-tonk and overidden by tourists than Patong for sure.

Overall, our stay at this resort was quite nice, and probably would have been much nicer in high season when I understand the heat and humidity is less severe. I should add, by the way, that the Thavorn staff were generally very pleasant and helpful, although they could use a bit more training in English, since that's the only common language all the guests seemed to share.

So If you're looking for a place outside Patong Beach proper to get away from the bars, massage parlors and thousands of tourists, the Thavorn at Nackalay is a great value, and close enough; the shuttle from the resort to Patong Beach was about 15 minutes, free, and runs twice a day at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM, but you have to take a taxi or Tuk-Tuk back at about 300 baht ($9-10).

If the owners of this resort invested in some nice new comfortable matteresses, did some badly needed re-wiring in the rooms, created a nice indoor air-conditioned restaurant, and stopped nickel and diming on some things (for example, charging for Internet access, which seemed ridiculous since the cost was minimal but you had to buy an access login card, etc.), this would be a truly 5-star experience. I would have been happy to pay a bit more for these seemingly obvious upgrades.

Dear Thavorn,

I would like to thank you all for making my trip so enjoyable and unforgettable. I stayed at room 5108 this week and it had a spectacular view of the sea.
The cable car experience to the rooms was unique and enjoyable. The attendant on the cars were very careful and when I waved or pressed the button, he would quickly bring the vehicle up. and Do not worry about the ride being long as stated in some reviews. Its pretty quick and there will be a new car next week.
The room was always kept very clean and supplies refilled. I called for room service one night as I had used up my bath foam. It came to me within 15mins. There was some communication problem at the begiining, but once they understood, they were up quickly. Good job people
The receptionist was always friendly and helpful. Giving recommendations on where to go and stuff.
Breakfast was very good. Nice spread and i Loved it.
Cab was expensive in phuket not only in Thavorn as stated. So its understandable. I will be back again in december for my next beach retreat. Thanks for everything.
